Getting an energy audit done, what's the deal?

Firstly, sorry if this is the wrong spot for this, I couldn't pick the best place.

We went in a competition a while ago to win solar panels for our house. Turns out, every entrant gets a free energy audit on their house! So we have someone coming at 10am on Saturday to check everything out. They'll also show us the panels we might win (I guess so we can buy them if we don't win lol). We also get a Bunnings voucher, hooray!

So I'm just wondering, what exactly is this guy gonna do? We're in a 1950's housing trust home, so I'm guessing there's plenty that we could do better. We already have a new roof with special insulation, it's double brick, we've got those roller shutter things on the front windows, and have gas water and heating.

What else are they gonna tell us we should do? Has anyone had one of these done before?

I work for an Energy Management company and although I only do the Lighting Audits I can tell you what we do for a full on Energy Audit.

We do a full site inspection (looking at Air Con, insulation and lighting etc) and calculate how much of your electricity bill is taken up with Air Con and Lighting. For this we need the past 12 months energy bills and also the tarif information from your supplier (you can find this on any bill). We'd then calculate how much you would be able to save in both kW and $'s if you implemented our recommendations and how long it would take before you were seeing a return on your investment - ie, how long it would take before the cost of our recommendations had been covered.

We specialise in LED lighting and expect customers to see a reduction in the lighting aspect of their electricity bill of around 85%.

I can advise on the Solar Panel aspect as I don't deal with those.

    Thanks for that!

Unfortunately though I don't keep our bills - I put them straight onto internet banking to automatically pay, and then chuck them out. I know exactly how much we've paid for everything over the last year though so hopefully that's something.

The LED lighting is something I've been interested in, but I reckon our house has dodgy wiring that probably needs to be fixed first lol.

    Cheers
