    Question Green Thumbs I Need Your Assistance :)

    DP bought me a mini greenhouse for mothers day (the little plastic yeates one) and the following seeds:

    * Red Onion
    * Snow Peas
    * Carrot
    * Cucumber

    Today i bought the following herbs:
    * Garlic Chives
    * Mint
    * Oregano
    * Parsley

    I am going to plant some of the herbs in a pot near the kitchen door and then put the rest in the veggie garden we are working on.

    1. Will all 4 herbs be ok in 1 longish rectangular pot?

    2. With the veggies can all of them be started in the greenhouse and then transplanted to the veggie patch?

    3. What are some other easy fruits/veggies we can try growing?
    I would really like to try lettuce, watermelon, tomato, capsicum?

    Any hints on the best possible way to do this would be greatly appreciated.

    Parsley and oregano grow like mad. So if your pot is small, they will be too big. My parsley is now the size of, say a half wine barrel and it's been cut back multiple times. Oregano is the same and I got that just as a one stem length and shoved it into the ground. You might want to just find a sunny spot in your general garden area and have them grow. We have mint growing in a small pot, but I'm not sure how healthy it will be long-term if we don't transplant it.

    I've transplanted all seeds I've grown from a tin and then into the garden, no problems.

    Lettuce I find grows easily, but the snails love it. Tomato is seasonal and they need something to climb on, like trellis or stakes. I'm growing capsicum at the moment, they are small plants, but the snails love them too.

    Thanks hun, how much sun does your veg patch get?

    Our sideway probably gets the "main" sun, from around 11am to between 3 and 4pm. Where the herbs and oregano are (but not the parsley), that's in our "backyard" side of our house so they get the sun most of the day. If it's a stinking hot day, we move the mobile pots to shade, they have basil, mint and thyme in them.

    I have a pretty free week for next week, would love to come up if a day suits. Haven't seen you for aaaagggeeess I've got some dried pumpkin seeds too that I can bring.

    Being a mini greenhouse you will be able to move it to get the most sun no matter what season. Get a couple of bricks and place on the bottom shelf as the wind will knock it over.

    Plant your seeds into egg cartons and then you can plant these straight into the ground. We grew alot from seedlings this year and had great crops. Cucumber & zucchini grew so much we were giving them away to stop them rotting. Beetroot did really well and we are still harvesting it. Great roasted or in stews.
    Beans, strawberries & tomatoes are just about finished and the pumpkins will be picked soon.

    It is to late for watermelon as it needs alot of sun to make them taste nice.

    Herbs can be kept in the greenhouse over winter as can lettuce.

    Too late for tomatoes - Melbourne cup day is tomato planting day.

    Beaware that some vegies and herbs don't like their roots being touched or anything once they start - beetroot, coriander and a few others. Best to plant the seeds where you intend to grow them, or plant them in those tubestock pots so you don't disrupt the roots when you move them.

    Mint likes wet and can handle shade. It can be a bit of a weed - so some people recommend planting it in a pot on it's own so that it doesn't take over. Parsley is awesome and shoudl grow well ATM.

    Year round Lettuce is a great crop - i think it would like the idea of starting out in a green house, but i've never tried.
    My capsicum is going OK, but I'm not sure if you are too late with that? Watermelon - how big is your garden ? I think watermelon spreads a lot.

    I find zucchinis are easy to grow and also easy to put in a lot of meals. But that season is over too now. Beans and peas time, I think? Have you though about planting spinach? It's easy too.

    Maybe google Gardening Australia - they know more than you can ever grow!!
