    yep, what BG said. A thick layer of newspaper does a great job, it breaks down eventually and even before it breaks down worms can chew through it to do their work. It has to be overlapped so that there aren't cracks between it, you can't just lie newspapers side by side like pavers.

    We built a no-dig garden and we didn't use any soil - just layers of compost, lucerne and straw. It sinks down so you need to put new layers in between plantings.
