I have been taking Elevit right through my pregnancy and for 1st 3 months of breastfeeding and have just run out. Is it ok now to swap back to my regular multi Natures Own Mega Potency Women's Multivitamin, or should I buy more Elevit for while I'm still BFing? The main difference are the folate and extra iron in the Elevit I guess...
I was told by a midwife before I left hospital that you don't need to take special breast feeding vitamins. Don't know if that's right but that's just what she told me. I also read this in one of the handouts I was given at hossy.
i'm a great believer in supplements - and as a complementary therapist, i do take them myself. when i had my twins in 1988, there wasn't much support for breastfeeding or vitamins, but i stuck to my guns and took them, and fed for 20 months till i fell pregnant again, although due to circumstances beyond my control i didn't continue that pregnancy. when i fell pregnant with my youngest, i didn't take supplements, and she only got a year of breastfeeding, and was hungry all the time.
so i guess i'm saying personally, i'd take them, because if your body doesn't need it you excrete it anyways. better to waste a few cents a day in vitamins than do without. your body is trying to feed a whole 'nother person!
i take blackmore's pregnancy and breastfeeding gold, blackmore's cal/mag mix, 1000mg of vitamin c, and flaxseed oil. now that we're pretty sure my two m/c have been a lack of progesterone issue, i've added vitex as well.
the blackmore's pregnancy and breastfeeding multi has iodine which is required for thyroid support, also a factor in m/c. iodine is naturally found in seaweed (kelp) and seafood (deep water fish) but also in sea salt, and added to iodised salt.
