Well, the title says it all LOL. I came down with gastro on Friday evening (after DS had it on Wednesday), spent most of the night with terrible stomach pains and vomiting, which stopped in the early hours of Saturday. By mid-morning I had the runs, which has continued on and off. And I generally just felt like I was dying!
Soooo, when can I go out and about safely? I'm very wary of spreading stuff like this around.
you are contagious for 48 hours after your last chuck or trots.
I know it sounds like a long time, but that is the recommendation.
So you need to lay low for a couple of days after you have finished.
Gastro is nasty and the last thing you want to do is pass it on!!!
make sure that you spray the toilet everytime you go with a disinfectant spray like glen 20 including the toilet seat and door handle. Also any surfaces you touched need to be sprayed with anti-bacteria spray.
Try and use the same cultery and crockery as well, and dont wash them with the rest of the families dishes. They need to be washed separately.
Also, if kids get gastro, buy some anti-bacteria wipes and wipe over as many of their favourite toys as you can with them! It really stops the gastro from coming back
make sure that you are constantly washing your hands as well with anti-bacterial soap as well- not just normal soap. and any soiled clothes should be washed separately with as hot water as allowed and dried in the dryer.
Make sure that you are the only one using the one towel to dry yourself as well, esp your hands and face.
i hope these tips help. MY DH job is food safety, so if anyone gets gastro we have to be deligiant that it doesnt spread as he cant afford to get it with his work. So far the kids have only had gastro a couple of times and we have managed to contain it following these measures.
Thanks Odette, I'd heard that about the 48 hours after the LAST lot, but I wasn't sure if it was true. Good to have it confirmed. I'm a dental nurse, in other words an infection control freak, so I'm pretty good with all the handwashing etc Hadn't been doing the cutlery though, didn't think of that!!!! Doesn't a dishwasher get hot enough????
Thanks for all the info, you sound like a gastro guru
Odette, excellent recommendations, we do the same things in our house and if one person gets gastro no one else in the house ever gets it so it does work!!!
I just wanted to add, apparently you shouldn't use public swimming pools for a good two weeks afterwards. There must be some gastro-causing germs that linger for a while afterwards, and warm moist swimming pools are ideal for spreading them around the population. EWW!
I've been wondering about this gastro thing a bit lately cause it has been going through my friends and family. So my question is, if you had it and then a family/friend has it the next week and you arent too careful about staying away from them are you likely to get it again?? Like if you are likely to get it again then how are you meant to get it out of your family cause it could just keep on going round and round! Hope this makes sense... and sorry Janie to hijack thread
