    hair falling out

I have a 4 month old baby, and my hair has been falling out for the past two weeks, I am losing quite a bit of hair and have to vacuum everyday because it is everywhere. I understand that this is normal after giving birth, but it is still very upsetting

How long does this usually last for?

No idea, my DD is 9mths and my hair is still falling out more than normal!
I guess it depends on each individual.

I hate it, coz we too vacuum every day, and i love to wear my hair out, but havent since DD was born coz I hate having hair all aroundme and I feel concious about my hair falling out everywhere. DF doesnt help much with the issue either

It happened after both my births. I can't remember how long it lasted for though. I think maybe a month or so? Anway, it is normal so don't worry.

if it keeps happening or you are worried go to your GP anyway, as theres a possibility it could be thyroid related if its not just the normal hair loss after the birth of your bub.

Thanks, well maybe I've got awhile longer of hair loss to go, oh well, as long as I don't go bald

I've lost HEAPS of hair for the last 2 1/2 years - I dyed my hair black for my wedding, so at first I thought it was that, but 2 1/2 years later (and no kids), i still lose handfuls at a time. The weird thing is, my hair is still as thick as normal, and I don't have any bald patches - I'm thinking its just a hormone change, which apparently happens every few years.

    Juts another suggestion

I would get it checked. My hair did this a few months after I had Chase and I ended up with a huge bald spot, don't want to frighten you but it's not always normal.

Months later it stopped, and I JUST got into the dermatologist and he said it was allopecia (sp) even though I am not convinced.

When it first started falling out it looked like I was in chemo, it was just coming out in handfuls

I don't know if it was coincidence but I started using Redwin Coal Tar shampoo and it stopped.

My hair is falling out too, I thought it was due to breast feeding? Started when DD was about 4 months old and is still going - she is 6 months old... I have fine hair but don't feel like I'm going bald. I guess only you know if it's too much, if you're worried ask your doctor or maybe the MCHN when you take DS in for his check up?

Ok so I talked to my doctor and he said that apparently when you're pregnant the change in hormones means that you lose less hair than usual so after you give birth and your hormones change again your body needs to shed the hair that wasn't lost when you were pregnant and your hair can't grow back quickly enough to keep up with the loss. He also said the return of my period may be spurring the hair loss on as well due to more hormonal changes. Anyway he is not sure how long it will last possibly 6 months or even longer.

All these hormonal changes really take their toll, but don't worry we're not going bald

I was going to post what Rayray mentioned: if the hair loss continues to get worse and you develop other symptoms like significant weight change then maybe see your GP and request a thyroid function test. 1 in 10 women (apparently) suffer thyroid probles post birth. This can be temporary or permanent.
