Question How much does a biopsy hurt during a colposcopy?

I'm just wondering how much a cervical biopsy hurts (when you get a colposcopy). Please, be honest! I'm better off knowing the truth! I have had a colposcopy done before, but it needs to repeated soon and I'm terrified (even though I have given birth to two kids!). They couldn't do a biopsy before because it had been only 3 months since I had given birth (apparently they can't do one so soon after a bub)

I have had numerous colposcopys and 2 biopsys and to be honest i didnt feel any pain. I felt pulling and a strange feeling but not pain as such.

    Good luck

    Hi there,

There should be no residual pain. You should be sedated and completely unaware of what is happening. The biopsy (unless they are removing a large area) is the size of a little bigger than a pin head (at best). The best way to describe how we do it is to say that we put a cord type thing into the scope and it has teeny little "clappers" on the end. We can open and close them as though they are clapping... they have little teeth on them (kind of like croc teeth) and we open it over the area we want to biopsy, and then close it and remove the cord. Honestly - it is extrordinarily small. Any discomfort you may feel post proceedure should be managable with panadol or paracetamol.

    I hope that helps.

I had a little bit of pain... I think it was more because it is an area where you don't expect to have any pain. It was more of a startle than anything. I did have a tiny bit of bleeding afterwards, only slight spotting, so I had a panty liner handy.
Wishing you all the best for your biopsy Jess... fingers crossed you get perfect results

Sedation? I don't think they even mentioned that to me... Do I have a choice? When I was about to have the colposcopy they told me if they needed to do a biopsy I would feel a sharp pinch and they told me to cough while they did it.
