Hands off the oven! How to?

We have an under-the-bench oven and it seems to be a big shiney 'touch me' to Missy Savannah (8 months). I really don't want the day she touches it hot to happen, so I've been removing her and letting her know she can't touch it every time. For some reason though, she just looooooves the oven!

When she found the glass TV unit, I would make this loud, short "AAH" sound when ever she touched it, then pick her up, move her away from it, give her a new toy and "yyyaaaay" *clap clap clap* when she picked the toy up. This has worked perfectly and now the TV unit gets completely ignored.

This isn't working with the oven though. I've tried putting her in her high chair while I'm in the kitchen, but depending on how tired she is or if she's been in there too long, she gets upset. We have these magnets on the fridge which are just for her - clicky, turny toy magnets, but they don't last long. An onion will occupy her for a bit, but not always. Basically there are times when nothing else I give her is good enough - the oven is just too shiney. Hrm, maybe I shouldn't clean it anymore.

What can I do to babyproof it? I've looked in Bunnings and a couple of baby stores for some sort of guard, no luck. Or how can I get her to leave it alone? Even putting her in front of the dishwasher which is also stainless steel does no good...

We were fortunate that we can gate off the playroom that the kitchen overlooks, so I can basically keep the baby out of the kitchen when cooking. But as DS was allowed out more (lol - sounds terrible) he has learned about hot things by actually touching them.. ok.. not when blasting hot.. but he's felt hot drinks, and a warm oven door. He's been taught that it's very hot, and he's never touched it. From very early on (using baby signs) he's walked past fires and ovens and told us they're hot. He still needs reminding, but I usually put the oven light on when it's hot so he knows when it's hot.

That oven guard looks good if you're worried about it.

Yes, they do seem to LOVE the oven! Our is s/steel so makes it reflective and oh so appealing to play around with. My dd (though she is nearly 2 now) understands the concept of hot, so if I say "hot, hot" around the oven or the bbq she backs off and we haven't had any trouble. Just be consistant with things that are off limits seems to work for us. Good luck to you!

Ours is s/steel as well - and brand new (new house) so extra shiney.

Of course I will still teach her about hot, that's not changing... but it's just added piece of mind that the one time she sneaks around behind me (she is a speedy little crawler now) and I don't catch her in time to stop it, she doesn't get burned.

OMG I never knew such a thing existed! I've had the same prob with Oskar touching the oven, mind you he touched it when it was hot one day and now seems to "test" it with a finger first. Although I will look into this cos I'm so scared of him burning himself and he can open the door too and the only oven lock I could find is a useless piece of crud!

hehe I just have to say it...I thought 'Hands off the oven!' was gonna be about ppl touching your 'baby bump' lol! DH this morning mentioned something about having a bun in the oven so guess thats where my thought came from!

with my nephews & nieces, we just used to touch the oven (when cold), go "ouch hot" while shaking fingers (like we'd burnt our fingers), each of the kids got to touch the oven when it was warm (not hot, but almost cold, but enough to feel the warmth) and we did the "ouch hot" with that, it took a couple of times and then the kids would stay away from the oven. My brother got a glass fronted fireplace when the two youngest were still quite small and they'd learnt "ouch hot" by then and would point to the fireplace and tell you "ouch hot".
