What to cook for Christmas lunch?

This is the first time I'm hosting Christmas Day at my house.

DH's grandmother usually has it but she's moved to a retirement village and it's too small to have us all over. His family don't really like me much so I want it to be fabulous while still being traditional.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Do you normally do the hot lunch or cold lunch?

At my nans there was always the hot lunch baked potatoes ,ham ,chickens etc.
Now we always do seafood ,prawns oysters,sometimes lobster ,lots of fruit and salads ,with meat still but the seafood overtakes

I did christmas last year, it was alot of work, I did the hot stuff : turkey, chicken, potatobake, roast vegies - Cold stuff like the ham, salads,
Deserts are rocky road, rum balls (not to be consumed by kids hehe, or drive after too many) triffle, christmas pudding. etc

How many people are comming? We had 10 adults + million kids. do the plastic plates saves washing up, and see if you can take the tables outside and do it outside, would be alot nicer then being inside with all the ovens on...

I'm not doing anything spesh this year, I'll be doing a 4hour drive that day to go see my mummy (ok thats a little spesh :-p)

Potato bake, roast vegs, pasta salad, coleslaw, garden salad, bread rolls.

Pavlova, fruit cake with icecream/custard, trifle.

We do the usual of roast beef or lamb, chicken, mac & cheese, potato bake, selection of salads, fruit platters, seafood platter and desserts i'll be a walking beach ball this Xmas!!

We normally do Pork, Turkey, Duck. Sides like bbq'd corn, Duck Fat Potatoes, Roasted Carrots & Pumpkin, Steamed Brocolli, Dinner Rolls, Gravy.

For Entree we'll have cold ham, seafood and salad.

Desserts: Trifle, Pudding, and then something not so christmassy.

I'm not doing a thing this year WOOHOO!

I always find inspiration in the Coles and Woolworth little free cooking magazine that they bring out and also BHG. We don't have a traditional lunch or dinner but I always find so much in there that I would love to do if we did!!! Maybe have a look when they come out - they always do simple but creative twists on the traditional things like roast vegies.

Yes i always wait for those mags I keep mine from the years before as well,they have some great ideas in them

How many will you be cooking for Tinks?
I like doing 3 courses for Christmas - what about seafood for the first course and then you could do hot for the 2nd and maybe two different desserts for third.

We usually always have a traditional xmas fare, roast turkey, chicken, pork and ham, roasted vegies, mums famous gravy etc, but last year we had all the meats cold and served them with various sides (salads etc) and it was a really nice change

This year will be my first year hosting xmas at our house and I can't wait to do it

For desert we have Nans traditional Trifle, plum pudding with custard, xmas cake (homemade) and cheesecake. Also every year I make traditional shortbread.

Perhaps you could ask everyone to bring something maybe something small and then perhaps you could do the seafood and other traditional things?? checkout the taste website for some good recipes

p.s forgot to add that we serve ours like a buffet so everyone helps themselves to what they like
