Halong Bay/ Cat Ba Island - Vietnam

We are thinking of going to Cat Ba Island in Halong Bay, North East Vietnam. Allof the info we have seen so far seem to be awesome but would love info if anyone has been?
Especially travelling with kids over there, and vegetarian eating.

I've been but I didn't take children or eat vegetarian so I'm no help to you lol.

I went out on a boat in the bay for a few days. I would really reccomend doing that rather than just staying on the island because once you travel around it by boat you get a real idea of the scale of it.
Have you ever seen a movie called Indochine with Katherine Deneuve in it? There is a scene in there where they are sailing through Halong bay in the mist - on one of the days I was there it was like that for a while - it was amazing.
Just south of Hanoi there is another area like that except the islands are in rice paddies - it's one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.

Just knowing it was a nice place is good enough for me! I am really hoping to go next year. Fingers Crossed!
