Weekend Away in Tasmania - recommendations?

Calling all Tassie girls:

I took advantage of Jetstar's "Friday Frenzy" and managed to score a set of $9 flights for DP and I to Tasmania! We will only be there for three nights in March (2012), but I would like to stay somewhere really nice and romantic.

I looked at the Piermont in Swansea overlooking the Freycinet Peninsula. It looks gorgeous and I love that it's by the water. The rates are pretty reasonable - a Spa Suite for less than $300 per night. Has anyone stayed there?

Any other recommendations? What is the weather like in early March?

Friday Frenzy? Why have I never heard of this?! Ploise explain.....

DH and I went in March about 5 years ago and it was cool but gorgeous clear days. We took the Spirit to Launceston and then drove down to Strahan and oh my goodness it is gorgeous! We stayed at Strahan Village (I think it's called) and it was awesome, stunning view of the water from your window! Might be somewhere else worth checking out

Sign up for Jetstar emails and every Friday they have a "Friday Frenzy" sale. I've never seen flights that cheap before, and couldn't believe that I actually managed to score them (they only released 200 at that price over a few select days, only between Melbourne and Launceston). So it's great if you're not picky about where you go or when! I've always wanted to go to Tassie - so I was like, why not?!

I will check out the Strahan Village now, thanks for the suggestion! What activities did you get up to? What are some things to do?

Swansea sounds like a really good idea! For just three nights you can just focus on visiting Freycinet that way. Lovely!

Otherwise Binalong Bay would be my other suggestion for a romantic weekend. The Angasi restaurant is great. It's a longer drive though. Anywhere on the east coast is stunning.

Swansea can be anywhere from 1.5 hrs to 2.5 hrs drive depending on which way you go (from the L'ton airport)

Anywhere on the East coast is lovely -

Wineglass Bay at Coles Bay is gorgeous.

P.s - Aimz - I noticed that you are looking at TTC soonish - just keep in mind when you book your accommodation that if you are pregnant when on your holiday then it's not advisable to have a spa...

I went to Freycinet with my parents about 10 years ago and it was just beautiful! We stayed at Freycinet Lodge (thats what it was called then anyway) and it was so cosy and welcoming, and the food was fantastic - they had game meat of all kinds before it was trendy! We also got to feed possums on our little back deck, and the walk to see Wineglass Bay was great - a picnic up there overlooking the bay would be lovely and romantic. There was a trout farm nearby too and we went there and caught our own fish and the restaurant cooked it up for us beautifully that night for no extra charge.

If you're really keen on the bushwalking and nature side of things there's Cradle Mountain as well but its probably too far for the amount of time you've got. We went in June/July (it was effing freezing) but it was this amazing winter wonderland and there was wildlife everywhere and the walks were beautiful - except the King Billy Walk which as we found out the hard way didn't actually have a trail, just reflective markers on trees that you were supposed to follow. It was also 12km one way, and it was sleeting. To this day I haven't forgiven my mother for that one! Back then they also did things like wine and cheese tasting nights at the Lodge too. The cheese in Tassie is to die for!

But, you really can't go wrong with Tassie for a romantic getaway, its just beautiful. Thats all I really remember from when I went there, but I look back now and want to go back so badly and have a really good go of it. You will wish you had more time there, its just so beautiful!

We toured Tassie on our first family holiday last year, and Swansea was by far my favourite place. We stayed in a cabin overlooking the water, and even though it was the middle of winter, it was just beautiful. But what made me fall in love was probably the Barkmill Tavern and Bakery. Some of the yummiest food ever, and the staff were all so friendly. Best pie I have ever had (yup, it's a big call, but it's true!) for lunch was the Chicken Curry, so good that I had my first pie ever for brekky the next day

But as the others have mentioned, Tassie is great for a getaway, so many places to explore. You can't go wrong. Not sure if you are into markets, but the Salamanca Market in Hobart is fabulous. I think from memory that is on every saturday.
