Would you take it???

Hi girls,

Im after a few opinions.

DH and I are leaving in 4 weeks to go backpacking around Europe for 10 month.s I have a little dilema.

I have a very nice engagement and wedding ring and im not sure if I should take it or not. No one will insure me (Lets just say if I sold it, I could pay about an 8th of my mortgage off) so its not a cheapie and if something happened to it I wouldnt be covered.

I really dont want to leave it home, I feel absolutely lost if I dont wear it and it will never come off my finger while we are away if I do take it. I dont whether I should risk it and take it or play it safe and leave it home. I cant stand the "when are you going to get the diamond" question etc if I dont wear it and because im young people always assume DH and I arent married. HELP!!!

My set of rings (engagement, wedding and eternity - all diamond set white gold) are pretty pricey but I have had no problems insuring them. They have always been covered on our international travel insurance policies (usually with Covermore) and now they are covered as 'portable items' on our home contents insurance.

And yes, I would definitely take my rings. I would feel a bit lost without them but that's just me

Im insured with Covermore as well (One of the perks of working for FC) and they wont insure them, they are worth $30k and they wont even look at them.

Our home and contents cover them while I am in Australia but not overseas. Ive called just about everywhere and no one will do it.

I'm amazed they won't insure them (I was a FC consultant too ) but it could be well worth considering adding them to your contents insurance. We pay $400 a year to insure my rings. Our insurance is with AAMI.

I only take my rings off to wash the dishes and shower so traveling with them isn't an issue regardless of whether there is a safe or not, KWIM. But if I couldn't insure my rings then I would be leaving them at home.

Whoops, just reread your post. I'm sure mine are covered for OS travel with our contents insurance. Will check and let you know.

ETA: my rings are covered for the first 30 days overseas. Maybe speak with your insurer (or AAMI ) and see if you can pay more to increase the timeframe.

And yeah, just realised Covermore have a cap on their personal items. Bugger. I must have had my rings covered with AAMI But I know we did cover them.

Do you have a safe place to leave it at home? I have an exxy engagement and wedding ring too and I think I would leave mine hidden in a safe spot at home. If you're going to be backpacking and staying in backpackers hostels etc, it might not be as safe as staying in hotels where you could lock it in the hotel safe if you needed to. I'd be absolutely gutted if I lost it whilst travelling. Maybe you could get a cheapie ring to wear while you're away?

Do you have a thick chain you wear? Maybe you could put your rings on that instead, and wear them around your neck?

Thanks for the idea love but I feel much safer with them on my finger. In places like Naples in Italy they just walk along the trains and rip the chain from around your neck if they think they are worth anything. At least if we are in a dodgy place I can hide my hands

Yep I agree, put them in a safety deposit box and buy a fakie for the trip!
