Wish I'd seen this thread earlier..would've jotted down the questions and you guys could've gotten some answers as I went the day they opened...a baaaad idea....but anyway, things i saw that really made my mouth and eyes water (as it made me feel like i was home again hehe)...King crab legs on sale for $31.00kg ...just pure heaven..steam them with melted butter dipping sauce..mmmmm.....ok, um, jumbo everything...western star blocks of butter 1.5kg for approx $14...kg punnets of strawberries for $7. 2 kg blocks of monterey jack cheese for approx $15 (great for fondue cooking)...they sell alcohol cheap too, also remember oshkosh baby clothes (but not prices)...oh they also give prices per unit like aldi, so you can easily price compare...oh as far as membership goes, i don't know if they've changed the way it's run but when we got ours in april, we filled out the info, paid, and then got our photos taken at the head office around the corner from the actual costco store...so hopefully those who have registered online won't have to stand in long lines just to get the photo ID....am DYING to go back this weekend for some crab legs...mmmm...crab legs....
For those of you who have just come back from Costco could you please give me an idea of what the lines were like?...on day one when I went the lines were 2 hours long...i really want crab legs but obviously can't wait in line that long with seafood....
Feeb ... thanks yeh was thinking just that, tried to talk DP out of going this weekend especially but he wants to see his folks whom are going for sure (as we haven't seen them for 3mths ... yeh, we doing all the travelling & we decided to have a break for awhile & focus for the 1st time on doing our own family things) ... i thought if it's too nuts in CostCo i'm gonna head to Harbour Town to get Miss C some Summer clothes for our very soon Qld holiday ;)
BabyQ (Master Bowler) WOW you got a thing for crab thingys there, LOL ... must be so nice :D
Rouge and Rayray let me know when you're planning on going in... maybe we should have a meetup there!
squidipa, the trolleys are so big they could double as a playpen..
...if it wasn't such a dangerous thing of course...hehe
babyQ as you have a membership allready you will get in quickly!!!
maybe go fri and not sat or sun!!
Lines at tills were not to bad at all.
OMG ... i didn't think if there where gonna be long queues at checkout  (goes to show i'm not use to thinking of 'em since moving to Ballarat, LOL ;))
Feeb, thanks for the advice...i'm just stubborn...
in my rush for king crab legs we attempted to get in on sunday....i don't know what was worse, the line for parking or the line in the store! ..just didn't happen...i feel like charlie brown...AAARGH! anyone else have any better luck?
Not brave enough to go in yet. When I go I'll make sure it's a quiet time. Maybe when it opens on a Tuesday morning.
BabyQ ... we were in THAT line inside the shop on Sunday for ages (wish i had of timed it, maybe about 40mins or more), OMG it was hell
People were all nice & sweet when queuing outside to get in there (DP & i went in as Guests with his parents whom had membership from online & were told not too worry about ID photo so we were in queue to GET IN not membership queue(IYKWIM), thankfully that didn't take long) and once in there to queue to buy the nasty side of people came out ... the line was like 60 trollies deep, it started off single file then people started making a second line which meant it turned into a trolley derby war when getting closer to the registers.
When in the there shopping you had someone nearly every for minutes asking to get past you, etc ... and if you didn't hear most people the first time they got cranky.
The trolleys are badly designed as you can't swivel the back two wheels, so if you need to move the trolley side ways, example to get out of someones way, etc ... it's impossible to do so. Poor DP had a woman loose it with him when we were near the lifts in the carpark as she obviously didn't understand the trolley can only be moved backwards or forwards ... DP said "Gee she's cranky now, wait until she gets inside CostCo, she will have a breakdown ".
We got quite warm in CostCo & dehydrated ... so i felt for anyone with cold or frozen items in the queue.
So, anyone taking your kids in there take water as my DD (3) was so thirsty, i even had to strip her top off.
Between DP's folks & us we didn't even manage a third of a trolley full together. All i bought was four items, ... 1 x large jar of sundried tomato strips, 1 x jumbo roll of Gladwrap, 1 x jumbo roll of Baking paper & 1 x bulk pkt of toilet bowl cleaner/freshners.
DP's folks paid their $60 for membership and said it wasn't worth it and won't be going again. We also agreed far too many items were the same as outside prices, even if you did purchase it in bulk or not. Be ideal to shop there when it quietens down ... but i honestly can't see how $60 membership for only one year is truely worth it. DP reckons he wouldn't be surprised when all the hype dies down and business becomes quiet that the membership fee would either drop in cost or be extended beyond a year.
As for shopping at Harbour Town the CostCo shop has certainly ruined the atmosphere. Getting into the carpark is pure hell. Many people losing their patience and very dangerous when trying to get to your car or the shops as far too many cars were speeding when past the ticket barrier in the carpark through frustration i'm guessing. DP & i lost count how many times we nearly got run down by cars whilst carrying DD, was scarey.
****** Just an idea here !!! ... Those of you that are considering paying membership, just before you DO won't you go in as a guest with someone you know that already has paid membership so then you can decide IF it's worth while for YOU shopping there. For example gives you an idea of the items available in there & their prices, etc ... ;)
You can get membership refunded if not happy!!!!
I would not be game to buy frozen or fresh stuff until it all dies down a bit for that reason as when in line other day lady behind us was saying same thing about avoiding frozzen stuff.
Feeb ... thanks a million i will tell DP to let his folks know ;)
(Yeh, we ALL were so glad we didn't have cold or frozen stuff in our trolley !!)
smiles, oh wow, sounds like quite the experience! i definitely did NOT have the patience for it on Sunday...will bide my time.... as for the trolleys having only 2 steering wheels, that's the way all american trolleys are made ...for me it's STILL harder to maneouvre aussie trolleys as i find i either have to have a wide berth to turn or pull a muscle in my back ..and i've been here almost 10 years lol...
as for anyone getting cold/frozen items..if you're there with more than one person you can always time it so that one of you goes back to get the cold/frozen items just before checkout ;)
BabyQ ... Wow, you have such a lovely strong ascent still after 10years :D ... Yeh , never had the priviledge to drive a trolley whilst in the States ... i never thought to ask DP if he has since he has lived there ;)
In case anyone didn't know you will need your own bags to pack your goodies in or pop them back in your trolley after paying for them & push to your car
Also the trolleys are not coin operated so i would imagine sadly a few will be dumped here and there.
Feeb ... yep, i checked the CostCo website that membership can be fully refunded if unsatisfied at any given time (though no fine details of conditions if there are any??) ... So, that's heaps comforting to know. DP has since told his folks). Thanks again Feeb for letting me know !!!!!!!!!!
Whoops ... computer gone a tad nutty tonight, LOL !!
Whoops !!
Whoops !!
