I'm north of Bendigo and it would be my first port of call should anything happen out here.
We're rural, generally farming so it would mainly bew just huge grass fires that would affect us.... no real forests or heavily treed areas out here.
On a Catastrophic day, I would be checking the DSE website for fires nearby, having my essentials bag packed and depending on if there are fires around, I would decide my plan of attack. If there's a fire between here and Bendigo, then I'll be north to Kerang/SwanHill rather than trying to find another way around it. For us, a fire is much the same as a flood here with regards to evacuation plans - we head in the opposite direction.
My home up here would always be open to anyone needing it.

apps can crash and so can the net. But if you google CFA incidents it takes you to their incident page. All calls are logged their immediately by VicFire and then updated as information is sent in from attending appliances (trucks). You can check that regularly although historically it has crashed on busy bush fire days.
Fi - they say leave early on an extreme day too. Early in the morning...but it depends on your definition of early morning too! I'd try to avoid peak hour myself (to avoid being trapped on the road) but if I knew there were or had been fires locally, I'd leave straight after breakfast.
I think your township still sounds the siren for call outs as well Fi. I could be mistaken but that was what I thought. Contact the station and ask if you're not sure because some stations in rural areas made the decision to sound the alarm for fires on extreme and catastrophic days. But I have to deliver the party line of "don;t let that be your only warning indicator because it might break down or it may not be set off at all". Personally, if they are using, I'd check the app or net as soon as I heard it but would also check the app/net hourly.

The CFA app seems to be a drain on the battery life of the phone.
