One way to lower your premiums, esp on car insurance is to up your excess.
I bumped mine up to $1100 (the max) and it dropped my insurance by a couple of hundred per annum.
I have only ever made 2 claims on cars in my life, one was a write off, the other was $11000 in hail damage, so I figure my odds of claiming on minor repairs are not great, and really, if I have to cough up $500, it may as well be $1000 KWIM?

i see a company called iSelect advertised a fair bit, or is it Choosee? where you put in your needs and they tell you the 10 best insurance companies, for what you are after.

Other insurances are LIFE insurance and Disability/Illness insurance, to protect you and your family, if you broke your leg, or something that stopped you earning for a while (so normal bills would still get paid).

Some companies give you a discount for bundling multiple insurances with them, or even staying with them, to keep you from going elsewhere.

Then there is Pet Insurance, which i know nothing about, except vet bills can be huge.

Places like choosi or whatever only have a select bunch of companies they handle though, so you may not get the best deal, just the best deal out of those they handle.

thanks Ausgirl, i didn't know that. I keep putting insurance off, find it all so confusing. I have got basic contents and car insurance, it feels like such a mindfield to me. Knowing what to get, knowing which questions to ask. i know as a single mum, i should have life insurance.
