I've had students at both my private homebirths. It's perfectly fine, they just technically aren't allowed to do anything as there is no insurance and the uni's tell them they can't because they fear of so,etching ones wrong that the uni would be sued.
Not sure who to have (apart from m/ws, DP and DD1) at this birth. Thinking of having my sister to video/photograph (and learn something positive about birth!), maybe my doula again. Just need to see who's around and what's practical too.
As IMs don't have insurance they are not MEANT to be there and they will not be able to count it to their requirements BUT they can attend anything they want in their own time, the Uni's do not have that much control ;)
BUT if the HB is publically funded then that is different. I also had one at my previous HB but she just wrote i was planning to birth in a hospital. ;)

Hope you are all traveling well!! 38 week appointment for me today, bubs has dropped a little and I am getting some good pre labour happening every night. I had a huge and amazing birth pool that someone loaned to us, but it was so big it would take longer to fill it then I labour, so we just found a much smaller one which arrived now and sits blown up waiting for the big moment. Getting to that part in the pregnancy where I wonder wonder wonder what is going to happen with the birth, will anyone make it in time, how long will I be in labour etc. My longest labour has been 2 hours from first contraction and my shortest only 50minutes, so all those little questions are popping up for me especially as the pre labour becomes more consistent.
We have quite a big birth team, one person to support each child(3) and two midwives, it seems like alot but I think perhaps someone won't be able to make it, and it's really important that the children feel well supported as well. The team is going to stay after as well to clean up, look after the girls and do whatever so we can lay in bed and look at our new baby before real life kicks back in!!
That's really strange about the student mw thing. I was going to have one when I planned on using government funded hb but when I changed to IM the student wasn't allowed to attend. Maybe it's a state to state thing or different universities?
I've asked a wonderful friend to be at this birth. She's had three of her own and her last was a homebirth. Shes super excited and has been reading doula books and talking on forums to prepare :) its lovely that's she's so into it all.
My birth is going to be a family event, it seems - and not just my family :lol: Me, DH, DD, my mum, two midwives, PZ (my doula), and her girls. I'd love a student middie, but I'm not sure there's going to be room in the house! :rofl:
Oh, I don't think I'll bring the girls! Isla will be far too full on and who knows what Amey will be like...I wouldn't want them to the anything away from your birth, or Milly's experience either. Nah, DH can have a Daddy and Daughters day/night (aka most likely call Mum over to help haha).
with my first HB i had my MW, student, DH, DS and MIL...
next one will be mw (or 2) DH, DS, DD, MAYBE my mum and photographer
Oh! I must've misunderstood something then, I've just been taking it for granted they'd be there :) No skin off my nose either way, I'm just happy to be planning a homebirth at this point. The whole BB community could show up and I'd be like "yo grab some chips, you're in for a show" :p:

Definitely depends on the course/Uni. At the Homebirth Conference last year, there was a final year midwifery student who had surveyed student midwifes across the country with regards to homebirth. Some courses have outright banned students from attending any homebirths unless they are hospital based, even in their 'own time'. Others only allow students to attend a homebirth if there is a registered midwife present.:
My student midwife was able to count my birth in her 'count'. Think different States or uni s must have different rules.:
they must have different rules...i would hazard that it is uni based rather than state based as HB is not illegal IYKWIM. In our case the students from ACU and RMIT are actually encouraged to seek out families through our midwifery practice.

Not sure what the student rules are here. My m/w is now teaching at UNSW, I'll ask her. I don't think I'd want one there, for everyone else's sake more than mine. I could give birth in front of a stadium full of people as long as they left me alone. But there'll be enough ppl here and I don't want the girls and DP to have to deal with someone they don't know very well (if at all) in our house then.

Doing well here. Celebrating DDs first birthday today, and re-read her birth story. :) Thankful that I've been a lot less sore thus far through this pregnancy! Maybe it's a boy thing. My pregnancy with DS was also very easy. Bought a really soft little blue blanket for the new bean yesterday. I'm a huge sucker for soft blankies!
My student followed me through the pregnancy, so we knew her as well, or better, than our midwife. I chose her specifically though, because i read an article on her where she discussed previous study and interests. When we met up for coffee to see if we liked each other, we clicked straight away and then i found out that some of her babies had been born at home too. At the birth, she arrived before my midwife and was just awesome.:
I had a student 1st time (to help her out, plus get a bit of consistency in 'caregivers') and wasn't planning to 2nd time around, but the universe had different plans. I wasn't really doing it for her the student 2n time around, i liked her, i liked the way she questioned things and made me think, i loved her support. When my placenta took a long time, and i had cervical shock, i was really happy for DS to be cuddled by the student.
Stay around Eenie. Take a short break if you need it, but come back again.
Oh Eenee :( 2 years??!!! that's mega long...I'll have had like, 2 more babies since then....omg. joking...don't tell my DH i just said that :ROFL:

Jen: my student midwife came to every appt, so in a way i knew her quite well...and i also put the proviso that she was not automatically invited to the birth. but as the pregnancy went on, i agreed. I figured that in our case she was super cool...live a street away...her girls go to my girls school hahaha, and the fact that she had her heart being set on being an IM (which she is now!).

My midwives recommend getting two buckets, I assume to top up the pool with hot water... I've already bought eight :lol: Supercheap Auto were having a sale last week, so they were only 50c each. Thought I might as well go overboard rather than be caught out with not enough :p I'm trying to work through their list, get as much as I can slowly so I don't have to run out and buy everything towards the end. I know I'm leaving myself with nothing to do in November/December, but it makes me feel like I'm actually being productive in the boring early stages... I've already got my blessingway invitations, that's how bad I am :rofl:
I think it's wonderful Teni! That is the big regret for my last pregnancy...we were faffing about overseas for most of it and so by the time I got back i found it really hard to get in the groove and organise a blessingway... then i went into preterm labour and got all my mojo ruined and just didnt get around to doing it. I feel that i didnt respect the pregnancy journey enough i do regret that.

I read but don't get much chance to post.
Baby boy born at home at 42 weeks, zero intervention.
People expect me to feel really awesome for birthing at home, like its an achievement. I am very happy about it, but it also just felt so "normal" that I didn't feel it was extraordinary. I woke up, had contractions, pushed a baby out, then had breakfast LOL. Compared to my first son's birth, which was traumatic for both of us, I've felt like the homebirth of my second son doesn't even require much accolades. Which in a way is quite sad - that the drama and trauma of many births becomes the story, rather than the completely normal natural delivery with no complicating factors.
Anyway, homebirths rock. :)

Congrats Rubysgoes! I know exactly what you mean. You're sitting around afterwards at home having the most ordinary of days. That's actually what I was looking forward to after DD2. Just another day in our family, one of the most eventful but at the same time just like any other. It's hard to describe isn't it? So glad it all went well!
I think I've decided on my birth team, but need to talk to DP. The only difficulty will be where to put my sister and my niece if they stay!
Congratulations on the totally uneventful, and normal home birth rubyshoes. Sounds wonderfully blissful. How nice to feel totally comfortable and at home after delivering your baby.
Congratulations rubyshoes!!! I LOVE homebirth! I felt the same after mine. It's just a birth people. No big deal. I think you are able to really connect with the simpleness and eternity of the female experience and it feels so wonderfully normal. But it is also a big deal and people do love a homebirth story too. You rock!

Hi Everyone,
I have a moment to pop back in... We had our baby last week, another successful homebirth! Gosh it's so glorious being at home with all of my family, I am spending alot of time in bed watching and loving my baby, she is absolutely divine, the entire family is over the moon. After three precipitous labours when this labour started I knew it was different, baby was very high and the contractions were not painful at all. After about two hours of this 'real' labour began, although the baby never moved down, it was so strange for me as I have always birthed under 2 hours. Finally the baby made it to the birth canal and within minutes she was born in her caul. Hence the slower birth, although I am told it was very quick for a caul birth. Baby had the cord around her neck twice. I am in awe of how the body works, apparently being being in her sack slowed everything down for her wellbeing being the cord so tight around her little neck. AMAZING... THis time after birth I wrapped my mid section and found the afterpains so much more bearable (hot tip anyone who suffers intense afterpains) plus it helps the muscles contract back into shape too!
I am blown away at how my body births and how the body knows what to do, a lesson in trusting that has been deeply learnt. Little one is going so well, she feeds and sleeps so beautifully!
Will be back later to see what has been happening since I have been gone!
