Homebirth General Discussion #5

Yep, I just say "we're having a homebirth", then we get the "ooh, you're brave" and I say that I'd be braver to go into the hospital system with the risk of unnecessary medical interventions, and I say it in the nicest possible way :)
The midwife closest to me who is also a IM told me she would not be allowed to practice without insurance, legally, so once that legislation kicks in, no-one around here will have much birthing choice - free or hospy will be it. I hope it changes. Not too fussed if it doesn't, I'm pretty comfortable with the idea of doing it unassisted here at the farm - esp as we're not hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest hospital or even RWH, if necessary. Our last homebirth was out of pocket and without insurance, so if there WERE an IM around who was able to practice without insurance, then that won't be new for us.

Mayaness...we had plans that DD3 would be a freebirth (after 3 very normal births)....sadly I just found that i had no support and huge pressures from what seemed like everyone....so i went the hospital route and it was TERRIBLE!

I will support you ANYWAY i can to birth your baby the way you WANT!!!!

We've told ppl and had no real negative comments, just interest. Not even any " you're brave" type comments so far. My sister has asked a few of the 'what ifs', but that's her fear talking since they're TTC no 1. Surprisingly my Mum has been really positive about it. Everyone else hardly batted an eye. They're probably all convinced we're hippies anyway, having bf DD for four years. ;)

I told someone once that I wanted a homebirth I got the biggest lecture I never told anyone after that. So it was a surprise for many after I had DD. The select few I did tell gave the whole but it's your first speech. DH took enough to convince at first but now he tells everyone.
For my future babies if it comes to not being able to homebirth don't know whether DH will let me free birth but I will not go to hosp!!! So don't know what'll I do. Its just so stupid this legal stuff at the moment!

I think if we have another and im not supported to HB ill just pretend i will go to hospital and just spend a few hours on the toilet on my own and come out with a baby!

I dont even want to go back to work in a hospital!

I'd stay and home and try not let DH catch on that I was ready to push, but once I've started pushing it'd be to late then right?

Sorry I haven't been in here for a while, just getting my head around 2 bubba's.

HotI-We told no-one. I just lied and said we were going to hospital, I just did not want ANY negative crap from anyone, it was fun telling everyone after DS was born!

Off to catch up on everyone, hoping all the mumma's to be are feeling well.

i think people thought i was going to do that last time (if only...), DH works shift work and long shifts and friends would just 'drop in' to see if i was ok when he was away.

Spoke to a mate today who was really excited when i said we were staying home, and that she was considering it if they had another bub.

My Mum is coming with me on Tuesday night to see the movie.

I fooled everyone the first time, even myself, with how close I was to pushing! The HypnoBirthing made it look like I was in pre-labour, and DP thought I must be right, too, because I was just swaying, rocking and walking, and humming was the only vocalising I did. I reckon if you did some HypnoBirthing you could fool everyone ;) It IS reported to fool midwives and obs, who are convinced they know when someone is ready to pop...
We had planned a FBC birth, but I was still paranoid and didn't want to go 'on the clock' once checked in, so our plan was to labour as much as possible at home. Even when I got in the car I thought it would be much longer, but I was only in the FBC for 45 mins and DS was out, so I reckon, with a bit of self-hypnosis, you could swing a "too late to get in the car and you can't make me"... I told DP soon after DS's birth that he could never make me get in a car again whilst in labour unless it was medically necesary!

our family and close friends know we're planning on staying home...they're all supportive...my best friend, who I supported through 2 hospy births commented that I was really brave to be planning on a homebirth - I kept my mouth shut. Workmates, if they ask where I'm having the baby, I just say Royal Women's, because I'll have a backup booking there...I don't share parenting values with the people I work with (some women I work with actually say they 'hate' being a mum) and have heard some of the people I work with make negative comments about the 'selfish' and 'crazy' women who think we should 'all be having homebirths' so don't really want to feel like I need to defend myself to people who's opinions I don't respect anyway :S Sad but true.
