anxious about pregnancy with implanon!! please help

i have had the implannon since about april. for the first month and a half or so i didn't have a period and from then up until about three weeks ago i had it every day. it began quite light and then eventually it was like the heaviest days of my regular period before i had the implanon put in, every single day. about three weeks ago i noticed that some days it would go away unless i had sex, then i would bleed a bit. then about a week and a half ago it stopped all together. i have been pregnant before and aborted and it seems like i have all the same signs, however these are similar to pre-menstrual so i'm unsure about what is going on? i know a friend who has become pregnant while on the implanon so i am really freaking out about this.

it seems a bit strange for my body to be adjusting it's menstrual cycle all of a sudden now, after having my period non-stop for so many months.

can anybody help? i'm planning to go to the doctor tomorrow morning or take a pregnancy test but i'm hoping somebody can ease my mind and say they have experienced something similar. the whole point in getting the implanon was so that i definitely could not become pregnant again...i don't want to have another abortion and i am really scared.

Hi Marigold. Firstly I hope your ok. You sound pretty stressed.

The only times I have heard of people falling pg on implanon are those who are obese and near the end of the 3 yr time limit (being overweight may shorten the effectiveness towrds the end) but that is quite rare. And those who have gotten pg on the day of having it inserted or maybe the day after, before it had a chance to enter the bloodstream. I think my doc recommended to use condoms for a week after insertion just to be sure. But that was a long time ago so I cant be sure.

were you still using protection in the beginning of the implanon usage?

but really honey Implanon has a BIG impact on your system and the side effects vary HUGELY from one person to the next. I never bled in 6 yrs but my sis bled every day for 5 months and then she got it removed. There is no way of knowing how it might affect you.

I think most likely it is just your body adjusting. but still do a test and/or go to the doc just to be sure. GL honey. Hope your ok.

i agree with myson. implanon does some weird stuff to ur body. I had mine removed after about 10 months coz my periods were all over the place, i gained weight & became seriously moody. For the first few weeks i didnt bleed, then after that i bled for about 9 months straight bar a couple days out of the week here & there.
Definatly go to the drs or do a home test to ease ur mind tho.
I will be having the mirena iud put in soon. Apparently it doesnt have all the side effects the implanon does.

    Hi there,

I also had an implanon that I got removed about a year ago because my body had gone a bit wacky. I had had spotting on and off for the year or so that I had it, but as time went on the spotting would keep going and going and going. Then I started to think that I might be pregnant because I horribly sore breasts that wouldn't get any better. I did home test after test that kept coming up negative. So after a few weeks (still spotting) I decided to go to the doctor because something didn't feel right (and I still secretly thought I might be pregnant).

The doctor did a pap smear which came back with a level 3 abnormality. I was so terrified, especially because my previous pap smear was only 18 months before hand and I had always had normal results. It was just before christmas and I couldn't get in to see the gyno that I was referred to for 6 weeks, so I went to see my normal gp for advice and a different referral.

She explained that constant bleeding/spotting isn't very good as it effects the ph level of the vagina which can lead to a whole host of problems. She recommended I get the implanon out asap (which I did) and got me in to see a gyno within a couple of weeks to have the pap smear results checked out.

So, I went to the gyno who did a coloposcopy (or something that sounds like that), basically where they spray a substance in your cervic which shows any abnormal cells. It took him forever to find anything and when he did it was a tiny spot that he said he couldn't be sure was anything. But he took a sample and did a pap smear at the same time.

The pap smear came back as normal, and the biopsy came back as a possible low grade abnormality but inconclusive. But basically nothing to worry about, I was just told to come back for a pap smear in 12 months.

I don't know if the implanon was to blame for that terrifying abnormal pap smear or not. But I do think it is really bad for you to have any sort of bleeding that last more than a couple of weeks. I was so glad to get mine out when I did and I found that a whole heap of side effects (that I hadn't realised I had) went away. That said, I have a friend who is on her third one who only gets a period every six months. I guess it just works for some people and not for others.

Hi marigold90 I was on implonon for 4 years (1 year over expiry) with a regular period and never fell pregnant at all. Ive had friends remove theirs because of constant spotting and bloating but have never heard of anyone falling pregnant while using implonon.

I suggest you visit your GP and hopefully they can shed some light on the situation.

    Goodluck

I hope you are okay, you sound very stressed out. I don't know a lot about the Implanon, but I would recommend that you went back to your Dr and discussed your options, and maybe have it removed if it doesn't settle down.

okay well good news, i had some very light spotting this morning and pretty much did a dance when i saw it, haha. i'm still going to the doctors to request to have it taken out and also have a test. but definitely not as worried as yesterday! the implanon has been so bad for me, i thought it was pretty much the best thing i could get since i'm horrible at remembering to take anything. but i've gained about 5kg since i had it in (possibly a good thing though as i was underweight if anything), am constantly really depressed and always crying over anything, and also have no sex drive whatsoever. so i guess it has to go! what's an iud?? can anybody suggest other contraceptives aside from the pill. alternatively, which pill do you find is best? i'll be discussing it with my doctor tomorrow but just wondering from personal experience what people find is working out for them. thanks everybody!!

by the way, i read up a bit on implanon pregnancies and apparently it only really happens if the rod wasn't put in correctly. i'm fairly sure mine is fine as it's towards the surface and the person who inserted it would have done many before mine. i sometimes bend it in my arm though, do you think this could affect it? otherwise if the test comes back positve i am that unlucky 1% or something. fingers crossed but i'm sure it will be okay.

    Question implanon/+pt test any advice?

What was the end result of your situation?

When I had the implanon I bled constantly for 6 months. During that ntime my Dr told me to do a HPT every now and then and if I ever got a positive to come in right away for removal. After DD3 is born I will try the Mirena IUD because the implanon messed with my cycle quite badly.
