There are heaps of knitting sites with online tutorials. That's how I'm teaching myself :D
A great one is knittinghelp which has videos that you can download. They are brilliant. DH calls me a nanna sitting here at the puter learning a new stitch. I can PM it to you if you like

Danni, you could probably buy a few to get started then leave it at that.
The pictures in it are pretty easy to follow, they use photos rather than diagrams which helps.
I think I'm a bit brain dead or something, I'm struggling to get past the casting on stage ROFL! I can cast on like a pro now, but can't knit a stitch for the life of me! Sam can you send me the link & I might try to figure it out from there.....
Had lots of stuff happening & never managed to get anywhere!! I have up to issue 11 here & just sorted it all out into the binder & am ready to go. I'm planning on watching the DVD in the next few days & getting started for real.
So how's everyone else going?

LOL, my mum is amazing, she can unknit when she makes boo boos and that just stuns me everytime... And pmsl one night she stayed over and we were knitting together and it was totally a tortoise and the hare scenario... I am sooooo slow. But its nice to have someone to ask silly questions of.
I have used at Paton's book which has basic stuff like scarves and a blankie which has meant I can learn to knit and I love being a knitting nanna in front of the tv. I'm not an ace but its really enjoyable. I am trying to get speedy as I want to finish a poncho (lots of squares for sewing eek) by Dec for my Sister.
I am really good at scarves now coz they don't take long and I can actually complete them, unlike my blankie which I just cannot get to sewing up :redface:
well, i've been collecting these and been too busy to get around to any of the knitting - when it got to issue number 23 arriving, i figured it was time to get to work! so, i've now done square number 1 and am doing square number two. was having issues with the purl stitches so that was driving me insance last night - ended up giving it the flick for the night, rang DH - and he told me how to fix my oopsie! i've now gotten about a dozen rows into the second one square...
i've been a bit cheeky though - i don't want the same looking blankie as everyone else, so i'm mixing the colors up a bit!
Oh yay BG! Right now I'm making a swatch (to check I have the right gauge/tension for a little pair of shorts) - it's soooo boring! I've never bothered with a gauge swatch before, and I'm still not good at looking at the knitting and being able to tell how many rows I've done - but mum can, so if I get stuck, she's my man! (or lady, as the case may be.) :D
Keep us posted on your progress - aim to be done by winter hey, so you can use that blanket for the cooler days!
i've managed to get to the end of the fourth square without any boo boos - not a dropped stitch anywhere!! all looking good....
only about 85 to go til the blanket is done!
Yay BG! Just keep plugging away, a bit at a time, that's the secret of knitting. :p
i've been very good at walking away if i'm getting "over it" - rather than letting it beat me or getting bored and putting it away for months...
i'm loving all the patterned squares - i like seeing the results!
hmmmm, seems i'm the only one still going with this!!
just finished the seventh square - would have been further along, but with only FIVE rows to go on the sixth square, my cat decided to pull the square apart
oh well, it hasn't stopped me

Oh BG I would love to sit down and persue learning how to knit but i couldn't even do my cross-stitch when I was on hols recently because my hands are too moist with this wretched hyperthyroidism. Now I'm home it's just too hard with the little ones...
I'll come back to this thread when the cooler weather is here... bring on winter!
i can't imagine how bad it is with the hyperthyroidism - i tend to knit a row or two and then have to take a break cos of sweaty hands...
i guess on the upside, it's not become a chore at all!! can't wait to put the first block of nine together and see how it looks!

no probs! it's a great little mag, and yes, they're up to issue 40 (i had 36-39 delivered yesterday!)
they can be a little slow responding to back order requests via the website, but there is a contact number on the website and when i've called, they've been fantastically helpful.
i'm now up to knitting square number 10 (have been a little slack!) - sarah, how'd you go with knitting your one square per week to keep yourself up to date? hope you're doing better than i am!
