help what can i do for lunches.

Hi i am in need of desperate help

I need help to think of things to send to school for my 5 yr old DS.
ok firstly he is lactose intolerant, so no cheese, yogurt, custard.
secondly the school has a no nuts policy.
thirdly the only fruit he eats is bananas, unless its something in cooking.
ok and just to add to all of this he has a lazy bowel too so we have to limit foods which may bind him up, and also his teacher is really into the kids eating healthy, no chips etc . and the school has no canteen. I am desperate.
What can i give him other then Vegemite sandwich

    Does he eat salads Tan?
Pack a little bowl of salad for lunch and chuck in little inidvidual dressings.
Lettuce, tomato, cucumber, alfalfa... should do the trick with a piece of bread.
I know he is younger but my bro would have eaten something like this at hsi age

Do you put vegies in spag bol mince?
I grate carrot, onion, zucchini, capsicum and tiny dice mushrooms.
Check out umm... Deceptively delicious. A book about basically pureeing veges etc to add to meals and kids won't notice.

Will he eat cold meets on a sandwich or wrap? You could make and freeze some rolls/sandwiches.
Could you make some fruit muffins if he only eats fruit that's been cooked in something?

    Salads perhaps?

If the school has a healthy policy (eg: no chips), you could get some pita bread and put some herbs and oil on it to flavour it and then heat it in the oven until it's crispy and break it up into chips for a healthy alternative to chips. This is something he could help make too.

What about making some pizza scroles. I saw a recipe the other day where you cut puff pastery into strips and add tomato paste and a few diced toppings (ham, pineapple etc-whatever you like) and then roll each strip tightly and bake in the oven. The recipe does call for cheese as well but you could skip this if he's allergic.

i was going to suggest cold meats, you could alternate between sandwhiches, bread rolls, tortilla wraps/lebanese bread..

My DH is also lactose intolerant and we've foudn sheep's cheese to be ok for him - there's one called Saracino that's really mild, a bit like tasty cheese only slightly softer and one called Romano that's basically a parmesan equivalent (with a little more salty flavour). They're both really good. Also, I have found that substituing pureed silken firm tofu for cream in recipes works well too, that might extend your options a bit in terms of recipes you could try for him?

hehe I can just imagine him with the orange things. DD went through that stage for a while.
I always send her with dinner type lunches. eg, roast, spag bol, vegie muffins (although they had cheese in them but you could do without), chicken drumsticks and pasta or amaranth or something. Banana bread? with some wholemeal flour? I guess this all depends on if you have a fridge at his school though or you could get one of those fridge to go lunchboxes.
DD will always eat frozen peas or pick them out of the fresh shells, and they are really easy, have you tried that?
Also you could try growing something in your yard, cherry toms grow like crazy in a pot, and corn is pretty easy. I think thats worked for dd getting her interested in vegies.
Maybe try substituting vegimite for the unpasturised miso paste you get from the health food shops? He might like it because its salty and has lots of probiotics which should be good for his bowel.
Oh also avocado? Does he like that? I love avocado and vegemite together in a sanger.
Have you tried him on sprouts? He can grow them at home himself and dd likes them.
Have you tried sheeps milk yoghurt? they have some nice ones at the health food store, and because its cultured and sheeps milk it might be ok.
