DH and I are thinking of taking a trip to fiji next month. I went there when I was a teenager and remember having to get vaccinations (I think basic ones) so am a little worried about whether or not it is appropriate to take DS who will only be 4.5 months old. He's exclusively breast fed so I won't have to worry about food/water borne illnesses and we will be staying in a resort, but just wondering if anyone knew any more about any possible risks for a bubba... TIA
i took a 4 month old to Fiji earlier this year. I think it is a great time to take them as like you say they are exclusively BF so it's nice and easy.
Good basic hygiene is important, as it is anywhere. I guess there is a certain risk, but it certainly wasn't something i was concerned about. It really is something only you can decide for yourself though. Travel websites will give you info about prevalent disease in different countries.
From what I know if your DS is exclusively breastfed and you have the relevant immunisations, then you pass on your immunity through your milk. I could be mistaken though so check it out for sure.
Other than that I'd take precautions such as long sleeved clothing at dawn and dusk because of mossies, be religious with sunscreen and hats, be careful of water getting swallowed during baths/showers to avoid upset bellies.
Thanks for the tips ladies. Falguni, glad to hear your trip went well, makes me feel much better about it knowing that you took your 4 month old there. Spring Angel, the tip about the long sleaves etc at dawn and dusk is great! Thanks so much!
