Strangely enough the IVF clinic I go to recommended I take a conception/pregnancy tablet that had 800mg of folate, works out the only one on the market that has 800mg of Folate is Elevit. (the others are 500mg) not sure if this means it better or the clinic are getting some quiet kickbacks!

    Hi Redlady

I have used elevit before its basically a pregnancy multi vitamin (a very good one). In regards to your anovulatory cycles, it may be that your not ovulating or maybe you ovulate later in your cycle (hence- no temp rise yet) but if you are not ovulating, elevit is not going to assist with this. You will need to see your doctor about this. Elevit is to build up essential nutrients in your body to prepare for pregnancy (and during), its not going to "get" you pregnant. Good luck to you

I have a question about Elevit - it seems to be what every dr is recommending because of the 800mgs of folate. But it does not have iodine which is also important (I think for brain development...reaching back into the dark recesses of my own brain) and is in the Blackmore's preconception vitamin (but Blackmore's only has 400 or 500mgs of folate).

Has anyone on Elevit also been told to take iodine supplements?

    Hi Buliej
I was never told to take iodine while on elevit. Ive since decided to take my own initiative though and start taking Blackmores Conceive Well Gold as it has extras like iodine and CoQ10 which elevit doesnt, and Ill go back on elevit once I have conceived. I also take 5mg of folic acid so the fact that Blackmores doesnt have recommended level of folate isnt an issue. Neither my GP or FS ever mentioned anything about the need to take iodine as well. HTH.

I take elivit because it seems to have more of everything, not just folic acid...But it makes me feel really sick, if I don't take it at night and with food then I just throw it straight back up.

Hi. My GP recommended starting Elevit 3 months before TTC. So, I've now been taking them for over 2.5 years...

Way back then I compared them to the Blackmores and Elevit had more of everything except iodine. You can easily get the iodine naturally in your diet from fish, etc.

It won't help you ovulate, but it's a good multivitamin.

i just found it to be overpriced people tend to pay anything when pregnancy related

as far as 800mg of folate I take megafol which has 5gms as I need extra due to methotrexate treatment after ectopic

Another thing Elevit doesn't have in it that Blackmores does is Fish Oil. They now recommend for omega 3 brain development for the bub that antenatally you should be having fish oil.

I have been taking Elevit this pregnancy primarily because is has a higher folic acid and iron dose than many others. Iron has been an issue for me in the past and so I have opted for this supplement over others.

I do, however have some reservations in that whilst is does contain many elements and vitamins, it lacks a fair few (iodine, amongst others). My acupuncturist/herbalist was of the opinion that other pregnancy vitamins often contain more supplements that may be beneficial to all-around wellness and not just "what bub needs". He recommended the "In Natal" supplement (at least that is what I recall it being named). I did give them a go briefly, but the reflux was nasty especially during morning sickness days.

As for affecting your cycles, I really doubt that any vitamin supplement will do anything more than just prime your body's vitamin levels so that they are all good when you do conceive. If you are looking at alternatives that may help your cycles, seeing a naturopath may be worthwhile. I was on Vitex and other herbs to try and regulate my cycles before we conceived.

What I would strongly suggest as something to take with Elevit is Fish Oil. My doctor was of the opinion that the 2 things have been scientifically proven to directly benefit bubs is Folic Acid and Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) - baby can draw many nutrients from our bodies, but humans cannot produce or store EFAs. So if you don't take it, baby doesn't get it. I take fish oil everyday anyway, but have moved to a cleaner, more purified version for during pregnancy (they filter it to remove mercury).

Best of luck for your TTC journey x
