The Great Coffee Debate...What is your opinion???

    Hiya

I am sure this has been brought up in these pages before but I wanted to ask everyone what they think about coffee.

I am very serious about my coffee. I don't do instant. I grind my own beans and my coffee machine is one of my favourite toys (DP is a close second though ).

I only ever have one cup a day. But it is a good, strong one.

On this TTC journey I have given up coke zero (I used to have two or three a day but haven't had one since Jan 15th) and alcohol (again, not for about six weeks) but I loves me my coffee and I dont want to give it up.

My FS is happy for me to have one a day (in fact she doesnt think I should stop having the occasional glass of wine), but, as I have a transfer tomorrow and head into the
2WW, I cant help feeling maybe I should give up

What does everyone else think? Have you given up coffee? What does your FS say?

I'll be waiting here, sipping my coffee until I hear from you.

    n2l

PS I dont drink tea, other than the occasional herbal/fruit infusion which has no actual tea leaves in it.

N2L - I don't know what the general consensus is with transfers but hwen I was TTC and pregnant I still had my one normal coffee per day (no coke or tea either) and I am like you, grind my own and make my own at home. Normally I have a double shot but when TTC and pregnant I would share one with DP so I had it half strength so that could be something that you could consider. I am fairly certain that one coffee a day is going to be ok especially if you are not having any other forms of caffeine at all.

When I was pregnant with DD1 I craved Guinness so my OB let me have one a week (how I looked forward to Friday evenings for my weekly drink ) as he said the stress of not having it was probably worse than having it - I think that is what your FS is saying with the one coffee. So if you feel you need it, relax and enjoy it.

Thanks Nai - the half shot (or one shot actually) is a good idea. Especially as I dont think decaf is where I want to head

It's funny about the guiness thing. I can remember my mum (way back in 1977) having a glass of stout every night when she was breastfeeding my twin brothers. The doctor prescribed it as a means of boosting strength.

I think traditionally stout was seen as an invalid "food".

When I told my FS about giving up coke zero she was pleased but, surprisingly, not because of the caffeine. She said (and I quote), "I dont care about the caffeine part of it". She was more pleased from the chemicals that go into it point of view. Go figure

    i agree with this
if you're worried about how much caffeine, maybe make it a little weaker if you can stand it

i was told by a neurologist to drink a glass a coke a day as a preventative for migraines (two drugs - one worked, one didn't - only variation was the caffeine - and the $80 a month price difference!) - i tried to cut out coke entirely (don't drink coffee - yukko!) - but it just started migraines again. the doctors said i was better off keeping that one coke a day and not having the withdrawals and migraines. over the first month of my pregnancy with DD, given the horrific morning sickness, i ended up weaning to one glass every few days, then one a week, and then nothing til i was about 8 months gone and the headaches started coming back.

with that waffle - my point! don't try going cold turkey - you will feel worse for it. if you are personally concerned about the caffeine levels, maybe work to reduce your coffee to a single shot instead of a double or something kwim?

I wasn't a long termer, but I did try giving up for the 8 or 9 months before we conceived this baby. On that last cycle, I was at the "sod it, not worth giving up the good stuff" stage, so I had the odd coffee (not daily, but at least three or four a week) and it was the one!

But then I cut it out completely in first tri, as well as all caffeine, including chocolate) because I was the most hyperparanoid nervous nellie ever known. Now that I'm breastfeeding, it's out again (makes baby very spewy) So maybe use this as an opportunity to wind down your addiction slowly, just in case you end up like me?

I dont' think it matters if you have the odd cup, but really it's just down to what will make you feel right. If you have a coffee and the cycle doesn't work, will you blame yourself? If not, then enjoy.

This is a very interesting topic. I've been tossing on what is good and bad during pregnancy and when TTC.

Once I began TTC I minimized my coffee and coke intake. I've now given up both altogether which I had to do by weaning myself off them because for a while there I would have at least 1 coffee a day and I felt that this was not fair on both my body and if I were to fall pg. The one thing I am unable to give up completely is tea. If I absolutely must have it I only have 1 cup a day (and as small a cup as possible) or where possible maybe even only up to 3 cups a week. I've always seen tea as much better than coffee. I usually drink my tea at work because of the hours and tend to stay away from it completely during the weekends.

Along the lines of what MabB has said. DD2 throws up a lot and my Dr said that caffiene may be the reason. I drink tea, and ususally about 6-10 cups a day. It was a very easy choice to stop drinkiong tea in order to help my daughter. I see it as it is only a short period I am missing out on my tea. I know that your question is about TTC but I think it is a little similar.

I would agree on not trying decaff. From what I have heard, the chemicals they use to make decaff are worse then having regular coffee anyway.

Just noticed your Sig. I hope your transfer was a success and there is a pregnancy announcement from yu soon.
