Long-term TTC & Assisted Conception April - May 2010

Hi ladies, can I jump in here? I haven't read through all the posts so I won't do personals, guess I just want to confirm it is ok for me to join in here.

I am currently doing my first round of IVF/ICSI, I am 30 and DH is 30 and we have been ttc for 14 months. I have PCOS and DH's swimmers are not good at all so our only option is to move on to IVF/ICSI. I have just finished with my BCP's today, still sniffing and I have a scan booked for 18 May, I guess to see if I am ready to start stimming.

I am a little concerned as I have no side effects from Synarel at all, I have read so many ladies have a huge problem and I am scared that I am not taking it properly and I wont be ready to start stimming. Just gotta be patient I guess.

Leabie - Hope all continues to go well.

Just wanted to let everyone know that my 2nd BT showed that I was in fact pregnant but the levels were so low that there was no way that I could sustain the pregnancy.
Sure enough.... M/C yesterday.....4 weeks and six days.
Mothers Day was always going to be tough - I am a Step Mum and didn't hear from my two step-kids, but this on top of it stretched me further than I have ever been tested.
I am OK now and just urge everyone who don't get the results they are after to allow themselves time enough to grieve.

Chekigal, I am so sorry to hear of your m/c, Take care of yourself, sending you lots of hugs :hug:.

Chekigal - I'm so sorry to hear your news. It can be a truly excruciating experience going through all this, please know I am thinking of you.

Kimbe - Completely understand how it feel better to be 'doing' something (taking Crinone) rather than relying on the body that hasn't behaved itself so far! I like to think that my FS wants to get good transfer success rates so has the incentive to ensure he gives me every chance of success - I'm sure yours is the same! Sorry to hear about SIL's announcement on Mothers Day, it's very tough when you want to be happy for others but also want this miracle to work - I hope for both of us it works this month!

Katielou/Lisa B - Hi and welcome! Hope your stay in this thread is short and sweet. The ladies are a great support both in good and bad times, so hope you find the support you need here.

AFM - my FET is tomorrow morning, lady told me when I rang that they thawed four and one survived - I had a heart attack and asked her why they thawed four - then she said, oh no, they thawed one and it survived so hopefully it will be OK to go for tomorrow and I will have three blasts left.

Juniper76 - happy belated b'day, and so sorry to hear about your break-in! Its just terrible. Hopefully all is getting sorted out. Great news about your follies, and that the boss wants you to take time off! And don't worry about gaining weight, we do what we have to, and anyway hopefully soon you'll be getting nice and round!

AFM - had the follow-up BT today, and all is well - HCG was up to 313. PHEW!! :dance: After stopping the progesterone pessaries on Friday, P4 was still 900, so that was a massive relief too. Next hurdle is the scan on Thursday 27th May. If I can make it to then, I reckon DH will even start getting a little bit excited (he's a rather cautious person, the darling)!

Thank you thank you THANK YOU again for all your kind words of support, I'd be stark raving mad if not for you all! I'll keep lurking here for a while, if thats OK, and see how you're all going. I send as many sticky vibes and as much babydust to you all as is humanly possible! Good luck ladies.

Chekigal - I am new here but I am so sorry for your loss! My heart goes out to you. This whole process is stressful.

Liardoz - thank you for the the welcome. Good luck with your FET! I would of freaked out as well. Excuse my ignorance but when you have a FET cycle, do they still give you drugs or just let you go naturally and do ET at a certain part of your cycle?

Juniper - thank you! So excited but so nervous at the same time.

I wanted to ask you guys something, my FS gave me a DVD that DH and I had to watch together, just about the whole process etc.. anyway, at the end they said that on statistics, in ten years time, one in every two children will be the product of IVF!! Could this be right???? Also, my FS said that on average it takes 6 cycles to fall PG, but I read on line that if it doesn't work after 3 it probably wont happen - is this right? Sorry, I am just freaking out a bit here, I don't want to get myself all down and out if after 3 it doesn't work? My FS did say that my chances are higher because of my age?? I am 31 in a couple of weeks time.

OK, so I finally gave in this morning and took an HPT. It was the crappy one that came with an ovulation predictor kit I was using a year ago when I still thought we might have a chance of getting PG the natural way, and it expires in June 2010, so who knows how accurate it is. Plus, I didn't use my first pee of the morning, but my second, although I had nothing to drink beforehand. So, again, I don't know how accurate this is at all, and I know this doesn't necessarily mean that the HCG levels are high enough to sustain a pregnancy . . . but it gave me a faint second line!! Now I'm wondering if I should head out and buy a better kit, or wait it out for the next 2 days till my BT. But at least I'm feeling more optimistic than I was yesterday.

KitKat stay strong just becuase your not feeling anything doesn't mean it hasn't happened for you. I know that last year in these forums ladies had felt that it wasn't going to be positive but it was so just wait till your BT

katielou welcome hope your stay in hear is short. I'll try to answer a few questions for you with the spray not everyone has symptoms so don't stress about that in fact I didn't have any and managed to get heaps of eggs out. Regarding the FET (Frozen embryo transfer) it depends on your own circumstances what treatment you have leading upto it some women take tablets injections etc others that can ovualte well on their own have a natural thaw cycle with no assitance. If you happen to be lucky like some of us to do that then its quite easy. Lastly as for if it hasn't happened by the 3rd time their are some mnay women on here that have had so many goes and then fallen that I don't know where that statistic came from. If you want some more info just PM me I know its daunting.

AFM waiting till Thursday now know that my egg has dropped so DH and I decided to take matters into our own hands last night to increase our chances. I know you should abstain but at this stage I don't care I figure I'm becoming a medical expert along the way.

Katielou, the statistics depend on your IF cause, etc. And quite frankly, statistics mean SFA (or to put it more politely, absolutely nothing). You are not a statistic - you are a person and for you each cycle will work or it won't. We were told we had a 50% chance of success for our first IVF (when I was 32) and here we are doing #5 (now 34 and I still get the "your age is great" spiel). Our one and only pg so far (chem pg) was a natural conception between IVF#3 and #4. The stats don't cover that. The truth is that lots of couples take a baby home after their first IVF. And many of them need to try again. You won't know which group you're in until you're finished, so there's no point worrying about it now. You are far better off focussing on what you're doing at each step of the cycle and maximising your chances of success. :goodluck:

Kimbe, I know it's hard, ever pregnancy announcement IRL is hard for me. It's hard to be happy on the outside for someone, when inside it crushes you.

I know I am missing so many girls in my persies, but i just totally have lost it I think!! I have an attention span of a 3 year old today, and I am so darn sore.
Had U/S yesterday, have avg about 15 follies to each ovary, ranging from 22-25mm, and another 20 odd ranging from 13-15mm. No wonder I can hardly walk. I am actually in a bit of pain this time. Not that I want to complain though, I feel gratefull I have follies to grow.
Problem is, Repromed don't do EPU on Wednesdays, so I have to wait till Thurs for EPU. Last night, protocol had it that I HAD TO have another 225iu of Puregon which will only make the follies grow even bigger. I don't think that I have enough room for them!
Nurses from Repromed rang me as soon as they got my scan results, and were checking up on my pain levels. Have been encouraged to drink 3 litres of water a day, they say that OHSS is possible, but low chance of having a cancelled ET which calmed me a lot.
Today they will get my blood results, if my estrogen levels are a bit high, I will have to travel to Mildura to pick up a Luperin injection for a trigger, instead of having the Ovidrel I have at home.
Excited about Thursday to see how many of these follies contain eggies in them, but nervouse about how much discomfort I will be in by then. Oh the joys hey. I just have to remind myself to be thankfull, instead of whinging!!

We both have health children from previous relationships but would like one of own.. It is doing my head in who to go to and so forth. Can anyone help me. I am keen to get started. Not getting any younger. :)

Murraycod you poor thing I know how you feel I had about 24 when I did my EPU and by the time I got to it I thought I was going to explode. Make sure you drink heaps I'm sure this is what saved me in the end and you will probably feel quite sore on the Friday so make sure you get lots of rest. Lol about DH being an expert at least he takes an active interest. Good luck on making it to Thursday and I hope you get lots and lots of eggs from it and not have to worry about another EPU again.

Purple we are with QFG. but taking a break from seeing FS at the moment til we can afford to do ivf.am about to start trying to get my confusing body sorted with natural fertility service at mater.

Ladies i need some advice..............GP did some blood tests the other day as my blood pressure was high and wanted to see if there was something causing it.went back for results today.one of tests that was done was thyroid (TSH) and the level was 6.apparently normal range is 0.4-4.0 so he said mine is underactive.he has also now ordered t3 and t4 results too.just wondering if anyone knows if thyroid levels can affect fertility as what i have googled today says it can.going to take my copies of the test results to appointment with natural fertilty thursday as from what gp said he probably wont be putting me on medication.but if thats going to be the case and if it does affect fertility i might see if mater will put me on something to sort it out and hopefully give us a better chance of getting preg

Trubabe - yes they can. There's a thread for TTC with thyroid issues.
Docs all seem to have different ideas, but I think they often recommend a TSH of 1-2 for TTC.
The other thing you might want to consider having tested is thyroid antibodies, which can also have a bearing on fertility. Depending on the cause of your underactivity, you may well have elevated antibodies also. You'll need to go on thyroid hormone replacement/supplement therapy - sometimes there is treatment for the underlying problem also, sometimes not.

Truebabe - I agree with Marcellus. I have an underactive thyroid and antibodies. I take thyroxine and some naturopathy concoctions.

Kimbe - yay for a great lining. I wish I was told I didn't need pessaries. You don't sound like a whinger. I think we all know here how it feels to be not pregnant yet and watch others around us fall quickly

Katielou - welcome, hope your stay is short for all the right reasons. I'm not sure how much faith I would put in the stats either. My FS told me that in my case it might take me 6-7 transfers before success. I know someone where it took about 6 transfers and I think there are lots of ladies around this site who have had more than 3 transfers before success.

Chekigal - really sorry for your loss

Kitkat - so it's looking like a BFP. It must be great to see 2 lines! I hope your BT just confirms what the HPT already says. I know why you might want to wait for the BT but I wouldn't be able to help myself at this point and would POAS again.

Terry - I agree, you do become an expert along the way. I think the only way is to take charge.

Murraycod - wow so many follies. I hope you don't have too much discomfort. Which protocol did you use?

AFM: I have my final accounts and nurse appointment tomorrow and then I think I'm paperwork free...as is the Vic system.

PurpleChic, I'm with QFG too (Spring Hill) and have been reasonably happy with them. I have mixed feelings about them because my first FS was absolutely lovely, but ignored me when I asked about checking if I had endo. I feel he was just not equipped for my case, but that our new FS is. There are also other good clinics in Brisbane (eg Wesley Monash or Life). My best advice is to check out the websites for the clinics and google the doctor names. Any that people feel strongly about (good or bad) will turn up in a search. Alternatively, if you know a GP you can trust to look out for your best interests, ask them for a recommendation.

trubabe - My cousin had thyroid problems and I know this def. impacted her fertility. The problem was the drugs to fix her thyroid either impacted her fertility or couldn't be taken if she was pregnant( can't remember which one) but the good news is she had her baby last year after getting her thyroid sorted!

katielou - IVF is a luck game based on fundamentals like embryo quality and your immune system. I was VERY lucky to be successful on my first try, but am now on my 5th cycle trying for #2 and not had any luck yet with no real reason why not. I agree with the other ladies, it's really just taking it one step at a time and fingers crossed! On your other question - I have to take meds when I do a FET because you need all your hormones to be exactly the same as when you would normally ovulate and as I don't ovulate on my own, I take drugs to get by body to do what it's supposed to. This means I might produce 2-3 follicles instead of 15 when I am on a stim cycle so it's far less evasive. Also don't need a trigger shot or anything like that. Everyone is different though, some people need no drugs at all and they just put the embie in on the right day for it's stage.

Kimbe - Hope you are doing well for your busy week!
Murraycod - I am horrified that your clinic doesn't do EPU's on a day that your body NEEDS it to be done. They remind me why all the fees have gone up so much for IVF because they aren't really putting their clients needs first. Anyway I hope the EPU happends quickly and of course that you get lots of nice healthy fertilised embies! xx

AFM - ET this morning another beautiful expanded AA grade blast - but as I had exactly the same last cycle and only lasted 5 days, I am not one little bit excited. Was waiting in the bed in the hospital after the transfer and heard a nurse ringing someone to book their D and C - I heard the whole conversation, which was NOT what I wanted to hear while I was stuck in a bed after a $2800 embryo transfer! I said something to the nurse when I left but it made me mad I had to ruin my calm state of mind to have to tell them something so obvious.

gday guys just a quick update no persies just saying that had the op this monrning all went sensational dr was very happy cyst is now gone apparently was even bigger but all set for bt on monday then hopefully injections that night. But all good slept off the anesthetic and am feeling good hope everyone is well all I could think of in there was the big row of ivf girls in there and how I was wishing that they all came out of it with a bfp.

Hey Juniper Thank you for your response I have been searching online about different DR's I have had an appointment at Life with Dr Tronc and then read some bad reports so that made me a bit nervous. So this led me to this forum and searching other clinics and dr's. It has been good reading others opinions and experiences. Still not too sure what to do. And then the pricing of the different clinics and drs are confusing. :wall:

Lairdoz - despite the ignorance of staff, things sound quite good...GL!

Purple chic - it is such a tough decision, but definately not worht rushing over just to get into the system. You'll know the right FS for you when your with them and discussing your situation.

MurryCod - I'm with Juniper, can't believe Wednesday's are "non EPU days", sounds ridiculous, I know they direct our cycles on the meds but that sounds bizzare. Just wondering what would happen for someone on a natural FET cycle? Anyway, not your concern right now given all the follies your trying to juggle. Hope the discomfort doesn't get any worse. H2O lots and lots!!!

All other Thursday girls - Thinking of youl!! In 48 hrs we'll all be on the home stretch lol. Exciting :)

Trubabe - you could give Sharkey's at Nerang on the coast a try, to help with the thyroid issue. Stacey there was fantastic and put DH and I on some terrible tasting herbs but I am attributing my BFP on IVF#1 to a combination of Sharkey's, acupuncture, and a lot of luck. She will generally look into the underlying issues that may be manifesting themselves as a 'thyroid' problem. Sharkey's has featured on a few TV programs over the years as being 'the baby maker'.

Purple - I'm with Dr Hasan Titiz at Nth West Medical Centre Everton Park (thru QFG). He doesn't have the greatest bedside manner, but hey, he worked his magic downstairs and now I am UTD! His receptionist Louise is just lovely and once I've delivered she'll be getting a lovely big bunch of flowers.

KatieLou - we had success on IVF/ICSI attempt #1 - I'm 9 weeks along as at tomorrow. You just never know, and you'll go nuts trying to work out stats. Our FS rattled off 1 in 3 chance, but other FS quote different stats.

gday girls it sounds like there are a lot of girls either just had trasnfers or are about to. Goodluck to everyone and may the tww one be a fast one with a wonderful surprise at the end. I just became an aunt again for the second time yesterday am so excited which is a massive turn around for me instead of being upset by it am very excited.
AFM: The headaches have started again but am excited as it means that the cyst is definately gone and the nasal spray is working again woohoo didn't think t'd be so quick

Don’t feel bad for feeling bad! It’s just the disappointment – and when people don’t know what you are going through there is no way they can understand any of that. You will always find there are babies and pregnant women all around you. I see it all the time. But you have to try and feel happy for them, and the precious cargo they are or are carrying, and realise that your time will come.
A good friend told us she is pregnant, and she knows we are going through IVF, and didn’t want to tell me in case I was upset. But I knew they were trying, and although it is unfair how easy it is for some people, I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. I have had several close friends have babies since we have been trying, and it is hard to hear someone else is pregnant, but it is also great news too – our time WILL come.

Katielou – welcome. I haven’t been on Synarel, so I can’t help you I’m afraid, but remember everyone is different, so no need to worry, and DON’T stress!
I think IVF works differently for everyone. Some people it happens first time round, and some people it can take 7 or even 9 tries. My FS said they would only do 10 (I think it was 10) because of the toll it takes on your body. And you only have so many eggs. Also, how many times could you try and it not work – it’s a hard process to go through. Keep your thoughts positive, and your baby will come.

Lairdoz – It is awful that you had to hear such a negative conversation. Just keep positive about your embryo...

Leabie – Sounds like excellent news!! Good luck for scan later this month!!

Murraycod – Yay for lots of embies. I feel your pain. I was there back in December (I had over 30), and it is not nice. I hope OHSS stays away – chicken breasts, and egg whites – have lots of egg whites. My FS wouldn’t do ET because of OHSS (I think very cautious here in Singapore) and I was put on a diet of 8 egg whites a day. Protein absorbs the excess. Good Luck for Thursday!

Hi to anyone else I have missed.

AFM – We did our FET yesterday. I had two frozen embies and they both turned to blastocysts, and both were hatching (1 had to be assisted slightly) but I am told that is good! They were both good embies! It was really weird cos I got to see the screen when they were putting them in, and there was a tiny white flash, which the FS said was the embies going in! Very cool! But I needed to pee so badly afterwards – not good having to have a full bladder then they go poking around down there!
So now my husband has me on house arrest and won’t let me do anything – but I won’t complain about that! I’m just gonna take it easy and rest over the next week. And hopefully my blasties stick!

Just a quick post because I'm pretty uncomfortable this time. We got 5 eggs today. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand I'd like to have more to play with, but on the other hand in the past we've always had our quality decrease as our egg/embryo numbers increased. So, I'm trying to just be happy with it - 5 eggs for IVF#5 has a nice ring to it. ;)

Oh, and our FS has decided we'll do ICSI this time even though we've never done it before. He said that our past cycles have all be great on paper, just lacking that one ultimate aspect of success, so he wants to try everything he can think of to make this one work for us.

And in other good news, you'll never guess what I found on our ensuite floor this morning just before leaving home! My engagement ring! They must have dropped it and I found it under a few bags they'd dumped on the floor. I'm still smiling about that one!! :dance:

Juniper, that sounds like great news. Engagement ring and 5 eggs! It is quality not quantity, don't forget. ICSI is also good news! Fingers crossed for this cycle:)

No AFM at the moment, as there is literally nothing to report of note, I'm a bit over the 2WW as this is my 5th so far this year, but I am hoping both for myself and the numerous ladies going through this time at the same time as me that it is successful with a nice, healthy BFP for each of us!!

Well I'm a newbie to these forums (although a long time reader) and I was hoping to join you lovely ladies here :)

DH (31) and I (28) have been ttc for over 2 years and we've recently done our first IVF. Unfortunately it didn't work and FS said not to worry as it may have been due to the drugs :wall:

Looking at the positives though - we now have 16 frozen embryos which I thought was great.

So we are now doing a FET this cycle however when I did my BT on day 14 (Monday this week), my FS said I wasn't ready to ovulate naturally yet so I wasn't ready for the transfer. Can anyone provide any comments on this?

I'm normally a 28 day cycle and with all over scans and BTs, I've been about to ovulate at day 14. Is it possible that the drugs from the stim cycle has made my cycle weird this month?

I'm off to do another BT tomorrow so hopefully I'll get the go ahead for the FET and the little embryos survive the thaw. :crossfingers: for a BFP this cycle.

Welcome Justina - hope your stay with us is short and sweet!
In regards to your cycle, it is very common for FS's to not allow you to do a FET straight after a stim so that your body can recover from all the hormones and get back to 'normal' (whatever that is when you are doing IVF!). I don't think it's at all suprising then that your body isn't responding as it normally does if you are having a natural FET the following month - my cycles are 28 days and my cycle after my stim was 35 days if this helps :)
Hope your BT shows your ovulate soon and I am sure your embie will be just fine, as you have quite a few embies in the freezer, you shouldn't worry about not having any embies to transfer.

AFM: God this feels like the longest tww ever. For this cycle I have been taking my temperature every morning since ovulation and its been consistent 37 degrees. I have been feeling every twinge and for the last 2 days have a strange butterfly feeling down there, don't know if its a good thing or a bad thing.
I have been tempted to buy POAS but then I think to myself I haven't done it before so why start now.

Just a quick one from me this morning. I had my nurse appointment yesterday where she explained the medication and the cycle (down reg) and she told me the doctor wants me on 225IU of Gonal. As you can see from my signature this is my first IVF and I've previously had low doses of clomid and puregon to assist with ovulation. Is 225IU normal for the first IVF? I'm sure a friend of my mine had under 200 for her first IVF. I haven't as yet checked it out with my FS. I'm interested to hear from your experience.

I am doing my first IVF cycle now (had embryo transfer yesterday so now on the 2ww).
Anyway I was on 225 gonal-F.

I had 12 eggs collected on Monday but only 3 of those fertilized and only 1 was developing properly by the time I had my embryo transfer on Wednesday. They have told me they are going to let the other 2 grow for a few more days and see how they look then but I may end up with no frozen embies (so really have to hope this one takes as I don't want to go through the whole thing again).

I think the dosage of Gonal-F depends on your age and how your body has responded to other hormones in the past. I was also on clomid in the past and only ever ended up with one egg per cycle and obviously seeing the results of my cycle now I think if I had been on less than 225 I may well have ended up with no embryos. By the way I am 36.

What other drugs are you on? I was on synarel nasal spray and am now on cristone vaginal gel (progesterone support).

OK, I've gotten a bit behind so I'm afraid I'm going to miss a lot of things I should say in my persies, but here goes:

Murraycod, holy cow that's a lot of follies, and a lot of big ones. How annoying that your EPU had to be pushed back a day -- I can't believe Repromed isn't equipped to do EPUs on any day when that's most suitable for their customers -- who are, by the way, paying a LOT of money for the privilege. Anyway, good luck for your EPU today! I suspect you're in the recovery room by now, so I hope you are not too uncomfortable when you get home and likely read this. Put your feet up and take it easy!

Dreamrise, welcome to the TWW. I hope it goes quickly for you! I'm sorry to hear you got so few embies from so many eggs. I feel your pain b/c I got only 2 embies from 6 eggs (using ICSI, no less). Just to give you some hope, originally I had 1 fast-growing embie and 1 slow-growing one, but that second one made it to blast and they were able to freeze it, so you never know about your 2 slowpokes!

LisaB, I think the dosage depends on your age. I'm 38 and my FS had originally decided to start me on 225 of Puregon. When I asked around, I was told that that was on the low side for someone my age. I got my anti-Mullerian hormone test results right before I was going to start the injections, however, and learned that I had lower-than-average fertility, so my FS bumped up my starting dose to 275 to be safe. At my scans I had 7-8 follies, which the FS deemed adequate, so the doc decided not to bump up my dose even higher, and I ended up with 6 eggs, which led to 2 good embies.

Welcome to the new girls I've missed, and hi to everyone else I didn't mention personally today.

AFM, I went in for my BT this morning. Lucky me, after getting there 5 minutes after the lab opened and still having to wait my turn behind the nana brigade who beat me in getting there, I was lucky enough to get a trainee who butchered my left arm mercilessly without getting enough blood. Finally, the "real" tech took over and quickly drew the required blood from my right arm. So now I have two sore, bruised arms! I *knew* I have bad veins, and it was pretty clear to me the girl was just learning, so I wish I had spoken up and asked for the "real" guy to do it all along. I also wish I had followed my own advice and drank a load of water before going in since I know that helps. Now just trying to keep myself occupied until getting the results this afternoon. In the meantime, I've been very naughty and POASed (sorry - I know that's ungrammatical) again both yesterday and early this morning. I got 2 more BFPs. What are the chances of this being a chemical pregnancy when I've had BFPs 3 days in a row?!?
