Thyroid antibodies and infertiliity

Ive just started my firts ivf cycle and have been told we have unexplained infertiliy. The only thing that my doctor discovered a yaer ago is that i had acute thyroiditis and had an anti body count of 26000 with the titre being 1-100. My thyroid was very overactive but coreccted itself in time. Does anybody know how these antibodies affect falling pregnant. My doc says it could be the reason but the FS said its not really a big concern. Im confused ?????????????

I am not sure what type of thyroid condition you have, as I don't know enough about it. But I have Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism, my count was 6.98 and it is supposed to be under 2. My GP sent me to a specialist, who was great, and I've been on thyroxine for almost 2 years and my last blood tests showed 1.77. So, if an underactive thyroid can make someone 'infertile' then an over active one probably can too.

I'd ask your GP. Mine is excellent and really tells it how it is.

Thanks for your reply My thyroid level is currently 2.65 which is pretty good for me but my doc thinks eventually I will dvleop hashimotos but its just a case of when all I know is I have the antibodies but currently not an underactive or overactive thyroid but that could change .

Hi ladies,

I have Graves Disease(permanant thyroid condition) and am in remission at the moment. When I first commenced treatment I was warned during flareups that I would be infertile at that time and whilst on medication as well. All I know is during my flareups I am infertile but after I am not. I don't know if that information helps...but I have managed to fall pregnant unfortunately I mc but the fact I can fall pg is all the information I need to know.

Hi Collo,
Saw your post in the "wellbeing" board. Thyrotoxicosis (excess thyroid hormone, iodine and antibodies) has a major effect on pregnancy hormones. I am thyrotoxic currently, and recently found out I am pregnant. I have a 5x greater risk of miscarriage and a 7x greater risk of my baby having birth defects. Hyperthyroidism DOES affect fertility in a negative way, but it does not necessarily cause it. I hope for you it is as simple as that. Best wishes.
