    urinary tract infection

I woke up this morning with a strong suspicion that I had a UTI...I had my retrieval on Monday - felt funny the rest of the week but wrote it off to post-retrieval discomfort - but this morning (Sat) I was pretty sure. I called the nurses at my IVF center and they told me I should go to my GP. So we spent almost 2 hours in the GPs office (my DH was so good - with it being a big footie day) - and he confirmed it is indeed a UTI. As I had my embryo transfer of Wed the nurses told me to tell him that I may be pregnant. He tested my pee and confirmed a UTI. He said typically, he'd send my sample to a lab to confirm the exact type of infection but as I may be preg he wanted me to start antibiotics straightaway and prescribed an antibiotic that he said was safe for preg (and good for the typical bacteria that causes UTI) and told me also to drink cranberry juice and the other typical stuff for UTI. He also said to call Monday afternoon as he would have the lab results then and could adjust the antibiotic if necessary.

I'm really nervous - I hope that this doesn't hurt what could otherwise be a viable embryo & that my body doesn't reject it because it's under "stress". Anyone have experience with a UTI so close to retrieval/ET? is this common?

    Hi buliej,

I had an UTI very early in my one pregnancy and actually think it is pretty common. The way I always treat it is to drink lots something like six litres water a day, a glass every half hour. I found that this helps much better than antibiotics.

Since your GP gave you an antibiotic that's safe for pregnancy hopefully everything should be fine. Keeping fingers crossed for your 2ww.

I woke up this morning as well with a strong suspision that I have a UTI. I am going to the doctors at 10:30. I was up most of the night needing to go to the toilet and then only a trickle.

Red Lady- thanks for the tip about drinking lots of water as well. I presume it kind of flushes out your system in a way??

Buliej - I hope that you are okay and if you are pregnant that all is safe.

Does anyone know how long UTI's typically last for? I want to get rid of this ASAP!

Ladies take some Cranberry Tablets - they work better than the juice as the juice normally has sugar in it which actually feeds the bacteria causing the UTI - you can get tablets from the healthfood section in most supermarkets - otherwise your chemist/healthfood store will have them

I would also suggest Ural but not sure if you should take this when trying to conceive?? maybe give Mothersafe a call they'd be able to tell you more on that - far more than your GP and/or pharmacist.

Goodluck - I suffer horrifically with UTI when pregnant so know how crappy you're feeling
