Question What day should I have IUI?

I had a scan on CD 10 which showed 4 follicles all doing nicely. I was expecting to O either yesterday or today but I haven't. I have had neg OPKs both days. I think I'll get a pos OPK today and will O tomorrow as my temp has dropped which always happens before I O.

My FS said if I get my surge tomorrow that we should come in for IUI.

My question is, if I O tomorrow, is it too late for IUI? I know if you BD you need to get there before the egg but I'm not so sure with IUI, help!

Lou Lou, even with IUI you want the sperm ready and waiting when you ovulate. IUI is merely giving the sperm an extra hand to get where they need to be, not an entirely different way of conceiving. Good luck!

an OPK shows the surge of LH, which is what causes ovulation - if you get your positive OPK tomorrow, it means that ovulation will happen soon - not that it has already passed - so i would trus the doctor on this one. we've not done "natural" IUI's - always fully medicated - but we've been for IUI 24 hours after trigger - with IVF, egg pick up isn't until 36 hours after trigger - so IUI obviously happens before actual ovulation. if you go in on the day of the LH surge, you should O within 24 hours of that happening

FWIW - if you and your DH feel up to it - have a go at it the old fashioned way now (unless the doctor has said not to!) - you can make sure at least a few of the little fella's are there that way!

    good luck

BW - thanks for that. We are BD-ing like crazy in the hope it'll be enough without IUI. I guess if I don't O tomorrow then I should have IUI but if I do, I suppose we'll have to rely on the BD-ing alone

Briggsy's Girl - thanks for the advice. I guess if I get a pos OPK today then I can always have a scan tomorrow to determine if I have O-ed or not and if not, then I can have the IUI. This is all new to me so I'm still figuring out what's going on

BG is right - OPK pick up that you are about to O so if they are still neg then that is a good thing. If you are pretty sure that you will get a pos tomorrow then sounds like your FS is right on the money - you want the boys there ready and waiting for you!

    Good luck

i would say if you get a positive OPK, call the clinic and let them make the call - takes the pressure off you to decide what you should or shouldn't do! in the mean time, have fun with the BD - may as well get something enjoyable out of this whole sordid ordeal!!

TaffyLou - I'll do an OPK at around 1pm and see what that brings. In a way I hope it's neg so we can have the IUI and give ourselves a better chance

Briggsy's Girl - ha ha, I needed a laugh as I'm feeling a bit stressed about all this TTC stuff at the moment. As you say, we may as well get some enjoyment out of it I'll ring the clinic tomorrow either way and as you say, they can make the decision for me.

    Hi Lou Lou,

In my cycles we used clomid and had the trigger once the follicle was a good size (OPKs never worked well for me, only got a line twice, and even then not nearly as dark as the control) and then 24-36 hours later the IUI, and got a positive on out 4th round. Also, I usually had a scan at the time of IUI, and most of the time the follicle was still there with the egg, even 24-26 hours after the trigger.
We also didn't have extra BDing, so we know that the IUI worked.

Hope this puts your mind at ease.

Leasha - thanks for your help, it's great to be able to get real information from people who have been through this instead of just reading text book style articles etc. I am not having the HCG trigger and will just wait to O so I guess it's just a case of timing for us. OPKs always work for me so that's something at least. My FS is great but sometimes I think he assumes I know what's involved in everything and forgets to give me all the info.

Just got a very positive, dark OPK - way darker than the control line :woot:

Got DH into action straight away and will try again this evening as well, just to be on the safe side. I also have quite bad O pains so I reckon I'm probably either O-ing or about to O.

Thanks everyone for all of your advice

I am not sure if I have O-ed yet or not - my temp rise wasn't very big compared to other cycles. I still have O pains so I'll get on to my FS first thing and see what he reckons. Eek!

    Thanks Leasha!

I just rang my FS and am going in for a scan at 12.30 today so I guess that will give me a definite answer. DH is coming too so if I can have IUI, he'll be able to do his bit. BBL with news

Well my scan showed that the follicle is still there so I haven't ovulated. I was given the trigger shot to bring on ovulation.

DH has to takes his swimmers in at 11am tomorrow then I collect them at 1.15pm after they've been washed, take them to my FS and he does the IUI. Let's hope this works...

Sounds a bit complicated there... the sperm aren't prepared in the same place as your FS is doing the IUI? Good luck with it all, Lou Lou, hoping to hear good news in two weeks time!

It's a 2 minute drive round the corner so I have to play delivery driver. The nurse said to keep the sample warm and said in the bra was a good place

Well I've just had the IUI and it all went well. It was quite surreal really (DH wasn't there which was the strangest thing as I had assumed getting UTD generally involved him, rather than just a representation of himself in a jar) and if it wasn't such a serious matter, it would be quite comical (I thought this as I was hunting madly for a parking space with the windows wound up on friend's boiling hot car to insulate the vial shoved down my bra).

Still, I got there in the end and it didn't hurt any more than a pap smear does. Now the waiting game begins. I guess I'll ovulate today or tomorrow so I can test in about 10 days or so (because of my short LP).

Thanks again to everyone for their advice

I O-ed last night so hopefully this will mean the IUI was timed perfectly
