Hi, I have my first fertility specialist appointment in less than a month now and I'm panicking. Can someone tell me exactly what's involved in terms of tests? I had a pap, and a stream of blood tests thru my GP which showed nothing (I think) and DH's SA came back normal. So just how intrusve do they get? Will they use that awful vag ultrasound thingo? I just want to know what to prepare myself for.....
yeah they probably will give you or have you sent for a vaginal ultrasound. Possibly even a HSG (dye through tubes) Don't worry it isn't that bad, i have had so many i have lost count! The specialist will probably ask you about your cycle, your general medical history, how long have you been trying and then give you your options? What ever they may be. Don't worry about it too much, if you have a good specialist they will probably make you feel well at ease.
I had my first appointment recently. Basically I just explained my situation to him. He sent me for blood test namely an std screen (hiv, hep, etc), plus rubella antibodies, hormones and to check that if I was ovulating. Then when the results of the blood tests came back (I had too much testosterone) he sent me for a pelvic ultrasound to check for PCOS (which as you mentioned included a transvaginal ultrasound).
I was lucky - if you could call it that i already had a history of PCOS and ENDO so though my specialist isn't usually to do with Obstetrics hes been helping out - i got sent for a BT to check Ovulation - hormone levels etc then a vaginal ultrasound to check for cysts... most of it is finding out info as much as they can - Try not to stress too much - not much you can do about it unfortunately... you get a bit used to having your bits on display and poked and prodded....
Thank you all for your replies... I am a worrier by nature, so I just can't help myself...but I'm still not looking forward to the appt...
Take care all
janee - i know its not easy - you have all of us here if you need support - good luck doll - i am sure that it won't be as bad as you anticipate and i hope that you get the answers you deserve...
I have those trans vagi ultrasounds as well even through I must have had them about 100 times!!! It is not too bad on the first appointment. I guess it is a different protocol for each couple. I had to have an ultrasound (vagie as well) and bloods done on the first day of my period and then start injections 2 days after. Some specialists make you go on the pill for a month before hand if they are not regular. See how you go and make sure you ask a lot of questions.
