    Re/ Entering the workplace

At the end of my degree, I was 22 and found out I was pregnant to my fiancee. I studied Design & Multimeadia. Since then I have helped my DH with branding his business, creating websites & doing the company's bookkeeping. I have also worked as a marketing co-ordinator in a design & advertising company for a brief 6 months between birth and 2nd pregnancy.

I am 25 & really ambitious, but at the same time need to look out for my young families needs. I would really love to establish a career... however I feel I will be 30 before this happens. Is this too old for the design & advertising industry?? My DH feels I should start my own business, but I feel I need to learn more from other colleagues in a corporate environment.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I can't make too many suggestions with regard to Design and MultiMedia, however I moved from the UK to Aust when I was 27 and started a whole brand new career in a whole new country and a whole new industry.

My advice is to enjoy the pregnancy, enjoy your baby, then look on Seek and see what is out there, what matches your skills and cirumstances, and then go for it. You have nothing to lose.

I think I am just having a mini - quarter life crises after turning 25 last week LOL. Unfortunately I know that the advertising / design industry is ever so competitive.

Thanks for your advice Lucy... you have made me appreciate being in the moment instead of worrying too much about the future! I will be in a similar situation soon as we are moving to Austria at the end of July.

    hey mummy,

my DH didn;t study mutlimedia/ design until her was 26 adn form his expereince first really look at what you've done your folio, branding etc. adn it really goes on age adn how long you've been doing it for He has been in fulltime work since he finished at 28. ( we are 31 now)

You will have NO WORRIES getting back into the workforce. His company is looking for somone right now.

i think the fact that you are a mum and still continured to be creative is an added bonus & starting your own small business would not be a bad idea- speak to friends, and let them know what you do etc. maybe do a short TAFe course on advertising etc. it all helps. maybe offer to do work expereince at a design company or somthing like that just to see whatt people skills are??

nyways, just sharing my perspective form the other side- your creativity will not go away-, it will only be enhanced by your life experience and your family
Don't know if i've helped you but i wish you all the best!!

    Hi Princess,
Thankyou for your advice! It is so inspiring to hear your DH's storey... My friends are all without babies and enjoying fullfilling careers in the industry. I am so happy with my little girl and baby to be... but am looking forward to a career. A tafe course is a great idea to to keep my skills current. Thanks again for your positive advice! All the best for you & your growing family!
