19wk ultrasound showed extra vessel to baby kidney? so scared

    Hi,

(Mods not sure if this should be in pregnancy section or baby section)

After a horror pregnancy with DD (told she had trisomy 13 or 18 and was incompatible with life, given option to terminate, cvs testing, many scans, genetic counselling etc) all the tears, stress and emotional distress turned out to be for nothing as she was born healthy but has well and truly scarred our family.

So, today I had my 19 week ultrasound, was trying really hard to be excited but still worried in the back of my mind. We found out its a boy and then the ultrasound tech said she was just going to speak to the doc to see if she got all the pictures she needed (I just assumed she was knew) then she came back and told me not to panic and that she thinks she can see an extra vessel on the babys kidneys. I have to go back at 24-26 weeks and have another scan to look at it again.

I am so scared, don't know why I cannot have boring pregnancies, I am praying it means nothing. We see out Ob tonight so hoping he can put my mind at ease and give us more info about what it may mean.

Does anyone know anyone who has an extra vessel connected to their kidney? are they ok?

My head is just spinning, the weird thing is, I cried and cried and cried all last pregnancy and today its like I want to but can't?? weird.

First off. Congratulations. Your going to have a little boy.

Try and relax. You have the appointment soon and hopefully you will get some answers. If they don't want to do another scan till your 26weeks then it is not worrying anyone else very much.

Just try thinking that you found out your having a boy

Razz, honey, BIG deep breathes you can do this! I know its easy for me to say from here but dont panic just yet, it could be absolutely nothing and you dont need to cry your heart out over something you arent sure of yet. Remember you are the proud, smart and amazing mumma of a little girl and now a little boy- well done to you and DH. Hang in there

One in four babies has an abnormality. Be it minor or complicated. If they had never scanned you or tested you you would have had a happy and healthy pregnancy last time, probably the same this time. Hugs for the stress all any of us want is a healthy baby.

Renal abnormalities are also one of the most common types of anatomical variations in babies and children.

I hope it turns out to be benign or of little consequence for your little one. Good luck and all the best for a happy and healthy and boring pregnancy, from this point on at least.

I think Tegam summed it up perfectly.

FWIW I actually have a kidney defect, one of mine doesn't drain as efficiently as the other because of a small defect. Thing is, it was only ever picked up by chance when I was having other investigative tests done for something else. It's never given me a problem. But I do wonder if they had of done ultrasounds when I was born if it would've been something that would've caused my mother a whole heap of stress...

Try not to worry too much hun, chances are it will turn out to be nothing
