Pollyanna - thanks for the best wishes, much appreciated :) It is tough to start with, but it'll get easier, and before you know it, you'll be like me with only a day or two to go. You can do it (but it is always great to have somewhere to vent too!).

Re tomorrow, I go to hossie at 6pm tomorrow night for a first dose of prostin gel.
I've walked, DTD, EPO, RLT, acupuncture and I have an induction massage tomorrow...but no signs of labour, so I don't think anything will happen before going to hossie... but you never know! And it was worth a try!!!

Well I had to go back to the diabetes educator this morning for a check up, all of us from the education class last Tuesday had to. 2 of the girls are now having to start insulin. My levels have been pretty good so far which I am glad about but last night we went to some friends for dinner who cooked stirfry but had white rice. I ate it and of course when I tested I got an 8.5. My diabetes educator said it would've been from the rice. Its so frustrating though coz I am kind've sick of eating the same things over and over again. I am sticking to the same things that I know don't make my levels jump up. I am too scared to try any other foods though, even though I know its all trial and error.

I just keep thinking 6 more weeks and its over and done with coz by this time in 6 wks I'll be holding my baby in my arms!!!! I am counting down the days already.

Leigh - I used to have stir fry and had no problems. Was it normal white rice? If yes then maybe try Basmati rice as it's Lower GI. I also used to eat Brown rice but its an acquired taste. I also found Hokkein noodles in stir fry fine but I found one that is in the aisle at woolies, not the fridge ones, and it comes in 2 x 200g packs. If you want more info let me know and I'll try and remember the brand. I didn't have any problems with it and I'm a regular with stir frys.

Leigh - Wow 6 weeks to go. I really hope they fly by. I swear the last few weeks seemed to kinda drag on. I had issues with rice and pasta too.

with the food thing, i found it hard and its all trail and error. I used google for recepies for low gi things and even diabetic recepies as well. It was nice for a change. Its hard going but you do get there.

Well guess what? I'm not in hossie yet!

All ready at about 5pm last night, and get a call from the hospital... we're full & short staffed, we've talked to your obs.... do you mind coming in tomorrow morning (7am instead)! I'm like... Sure ... means I get to sleep in my own bed. PLUS no-one is bugging us because they all think i'm in hospital. So we have a lovely cuddly evening together watching DVD's.

Drag myself out of bed at 6am ()... only to get another call! They've had SIX babies overnight, lots of ladies going home today but still can't fit me in. Can we come in at lunchtime. LOL, it's the induction that ain't gonna happen. I'm wrapt because every day gives me more chance of having something happen naturally, plus of course my bags are soooo packed. So we're heading off soon (unless they call again :rofl:)! Thanks for all the good luck messages :hug:

Snowchickie - Thanks for the tip on the hokkein noodles, I went to coles and found them in one of the aisles, might give them a whirl tomorrow night!! The rice that my friend cooked was plain white rice, so that must've been why my levels went over, I cooked stirfry at home the other night and used basmati rice and had no dramas.


Tennykins - I have a feeling my 6 wks are going to drag, I am really anxious to meet my baby now but also trying to make the most of my good night sleeps (well not that I am sleeping well coz I am uncomfortable and DH's snoring is becoming unbearable).

My fasting sugar level was really low again this morning 2.7 so don't know what the go is with that. I had a low one last week too and my diabetes specialist said yesterday she doesnt know why, especially coz I am having a snack before I go to bed.

I've had such a bad day with my levels today. Both my after lunch and after dinner levels were high :wall: It is so frustrating. I didn't eat anything that bad either. I've got a hospital check up on Wednesday so I guess I'll wait and see what my diabetes educator has to say.

All I can say is this is soooo frustrating and I can't wait for it to be over. 35 more days. I am counting down everyday and know it is going to drag. I am :pray: it goes away after the baby is born coz I don't want to have to deal with this everyday. I know there is a good chance I will develop type 2 diabetes later in life but I am hoping that its way down the track!!!! I am just sick of having to think about every little thing that I eat and how its going to affect my bsl's. Sorry for the vent!!!

You are never far from my thoughts. this testing thing is so annoying and unpredictable. One thing i've found is i can count on my bs being about a 4.7 fasting in the morning. Occassionally though i'll get a 3.7 after lunch or tea-makes no sense too me at all.And the way you can eat the same food two days in a row but get a different reading each day. I can't manage to eat any less and i'm sure if i eat anymore salad i will actually grow big ears and a fluffy cotton tail. My reading after breakfast was 8.6.!!I was really angry. I'm in to see my diabetes trio of specialists on wednesday-i think it may actually be better if they put me on insulin this time. Leigh don't spose by chance you are in melbourne at the rwh? Just seems funny that we are being checked on the same day.
I wonder how belfie is going. If she had the baby and when.
Tennykins;hope you are well,as you can tell this whole diabetes thing is freaking me out. Yet i've still got the cholestasis to look foward too!What a riot. Thankfully not to much longer to go-but still too LONG!

Leigh - Good luck with your appointment this week. I reckon all I thought about most of the time was food, or my levels. It takes over and felt like an obsession in a way.

Pollyanna - I was really suprised that the same meals just on different days, give differen't readings too. It's so frustrating I know. Good luck with your appointment this week too.

I totally know what you mean about having the same things 2 days in a row and getting totally different readings. I agree with the salad too, if I eat anymore I will grow big ears and a fluffy tail. I live in Cairns by the way.

My levels this morning have been good so far, but I'll be checking my lunch reading in about 30 mins so it will be interesting to see what that one is.

afternoon ladies....

my levels have been shiat lately!! this morning woke up (i finally slept in!!) and they were LOW!!!! Then i decided i wanted fresh pineapple... hmmm NOT a good idea.. sent my levels through the roof :(.. i am sure my insulin will be upped on thursday :( not much more i can do.... 16 more days till i meet my boy (unless-which i am praying) i go into labor before then...

I am :pray: for you that you have bub early, that way you don't have to put up with GD any longer. My first bub came 3 weeks early, I am hoping this one will come early too but some how I doubt it. I am already having it at 38 wks due to having to have another caesar, so I've got exactly 5 wks from today. Time is going to drag, I just know it!!!

Tennykins - Thanks for wishing me luck for my appointment this week. All I can think of is food. I feel like eating something now but have to wait til I do my test. We have a block of chocolate in the fridge that I could easily get stuck into but of course I cant.

Leigh - I hated the waiting for testing time. In the end I was eating little bits of dark chocolate or that lite cadbury one. I couldn't resist and not have any. Have you tried any?

Katones - Not long to go. COME ON LITTLE BUBBA, YOU CAN COME OUT NOW!

i have found i can have either a snickers or turkish delight and not go over board with my levels.. i just couldn't go without chocolate!!!

I am a chocoholic but haven't tried any yet. Might buy some of the cadbury lite one on Friday when I go grocery shopping. I am dying to have some ice cream too coz the weather is soooo hot up here, once again too scared to try it. I know everything is trial and error so I should just give it a go and see.

Xander Jordan was born 1.35am Wed 25th Sep! He was 7lb 7oz (I was 39+1 btw).

He's just gorgeous. BSL's all good. He spent two days under lights in Special Care due to jaundice. We got home last night after a whopping 8 days in hossie (had 3 lots of prostin gel before being induced).

And I'm just soooo in love. He is amazing. Sleeping like a log (probably cos of the jaundice and feeding like a trooper). I'll be back with more later.

Double damn and bugger. Had my gd follow up today with registras and specialists. the whole shebang. They have put me on two lots of insulin. Daytime and nightime long acting. Feeling a bit depressed and a failure, but i was totally up front with the doctors.
The doctor said is there anything more you could do to reduce your bsl"s. I said only if i sew my lips together!!:redface:There is nothing more i can do, i would starve.
The endocrine guy said it was important to get this all underway ASAP as i could only have another 7 weeks to go. Made it:o all hit home;a bit to REAL for me!So now we try and not worry and hope for the best.

Pollyanna - don't feel like a failure! I had to go on insulin too. I said to someone on here once before to think of it as medicine for bubs and it made her feel better about it all. The good thing about being induced is you don't have to go through those really uncomfortable last two weeks! GL with it all.

I had my check up at the hospital yesterday and with my diabetes educator. I have lost 6 kg in the 2 wks I have been doing my bsl's. My body must be in shock, no junk food. Pity you can't tell I've lost weight. Hopefully I can lose weight that quick after bubs is born, doubt it though. My educator is happy how I am managing my GD so far. I told her I am sick of eating the same foods over and over though. She did say some women have trouble controlling it around the 35 wk mark so I guess we'll wait and see how I go. But like you Pollyanna there isn't much more I could do to control it either so if I have trouble I will end up on insulin too.

I have had such a crappola day. Woke up this morning and didnt feel good. Too hard to get out of bed and a headache and tummy sore and achey legs.
Took my fasting bsl it was 5.0. Hmmmm.
Had a small bowl of special k , 4 strawberries and skinny milk. Took bsl's two hours later 11.6. I was thinking what the hell!!Something is really wrong. I was hot,sweaty,tired and really crying. Called the hospital and she said i was hysterical because of the high bsl's. Horrible feeling!!I also told her about the other symptoms and she said my bloods yesterday for my liver function werent good either so i best head straight to emergency.
I was feeling so fragile.
I had to do a urine specimen and they discovered i had a bad UTI-wasnt worrying me at all!! So put me on antibiotics. Hooked me up for monitoring-they couldnt believe a little boy could be that active for so long!For a good 40 mins he made huge movements and his heart rate went up to 202bpm. Freaked me out!He eventually went to sleep and his heart rate regulated at 140's. The doctor was really inexperienced and kept going to get other advice from the doctors. He comes back saying my liver results from yesterday arent back yet,so couldnt understand how the diabetes nurse was able to provide that information. I was just like "Whatever"...Grrr.
Then take my bsl again and its 5.3 after lunch.!! The diabetes nurse firmly believed that the uti was increasing my bsl's and thats why i was feeling so off;yet the doctor completely contradicted her.He says they have decided,they THINK its ok to let me go home!
Anyway nearly home and get a phone call from the doctor and him and the registra have found my blood results,surprise surprise. And yes they arent good. In fact they are all over the place with several red flags! So i have to go back to emergency first thing in the morning for more monitoring and blood tests again.
I've come home and vomitted twice. Not sure if thats the liver playing up,the antibiotics or the stress. Either way not fun.
Feel really angry. Whats the story;did they not have a bed for me over night?Or was the doctor just an idiot?Just so horribly scared that they want to induce me sooner than i ever anticipated and that frightens the hell out of me. One month early is plenty for me;god no sooner please. I know he's a fighter,but he's just too little right now. I'm praying my body can hold on another 6 weeks.
Sorry for the whinge,but it was just such a hard day!!!
Wishing that everyone else was able to enjoy the glorius day that we had!;)

my insulin levels have beeen upped BIG time.. i only have 12 days left!!!!! woo hoo is all i can say.... am SOOO over it... take this baby out now i say...

Pollyanna - sounds like the dr was an idiot to me! UTI's will sent your bsl's haywire and they can make you act and feel strange too (ie the crying). Behaviour changes are the first thing that we notice with UTI's at work, that and strong offensive urine, which youmay or may not have.

Same here Katones, I live in Cairns and its like 31 degrees everyday. I had bad swelling in my feet and legs with my last pregnancy too.

I have been away from this site for the past two weeks, I am still working my last day is on Tuesday. Can someone please tell me if you go on insulin can things get better or are you on insulin for the rest of pregnancy.

Work has been really busy which has kept me mind off the pregnancy. I will be 36 weeks on Sunday. I had another scan this week, baby is well and is the perfect size for the number of weeks I am pregnant.

This morning I had the worst fasting bsl of 6.5. I felt hot and stuffy all night and hardly slept due to a blocked nose, I hope that was the reason. But then after a lunch (I had salad and two tablespoons of pasta and hit 6.8). I was in shocked as there was no sugar or carbs. My body must be changing. I only have three weeks left I really wanted to get through without insulin. I have an app on Monday with DB Doctor, he will decide then if I need insulin.

KGB - I was on insulin for the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy (and I was induced two weeks early). Please don't stress about the insulin as it's not that bad. Like I have said before taking your bsl feels like cutting your finger off compared to the insulin needles, if that's what you are worried about. I even gave my kids (aged 12 & 15) as fake jab (ie no insulin in just the needle *****) as they wanted to feel it.
Plus stressing will only increase your bsl.
You've got through this far without insulin so hopefully you'll be ok.
Remember it's medicine for bubs if you need to have it.
Great that bubs is the right size too.

About the jaundice - not a given but a VERY common side effect of GD. Ethan had slight jaundice, didn't need to be under lights either which was great. It's just very important to get the fluids into them to flush it out of the system. Which can be hard as GD babies are usually sleepy because of the jaundice. You'll find little orange crystals in the nappy shen they wee too, which is some electrolyte (no, something else can't remember) being flushed out, nothing to worry about. They didn't tell me that at the hospital, the home midwife did. Just telling you incase you worry.

I'm tired and rambling now. Hope what I have written makes sense. Off to bed for me now.

With my first pregnancy I didn't have GD but my daughter had a little jaundice so hopefully it will be the same this time.

At my scan this week they confirmed I am having another girl, I am so excited as I always wanted two girls as I only had a brother and I always wanted a sister. We havn't told anyone the sex as we want to surprise everyone, everyone thinks I am having a boy. The name we have chosen is Jasmina Gabriella.

Pollyanna - I feel for you girl. Silly doctor. Hope everything is going better now. the Liver problem doesn't sound to good but i am sure they will sort it all out. With the insulin try not to stress to much because that can up your levels too. But in saying that i had days where eating hte same things would give me different levels.

My diabetic instructor was really nice and she said "you know sometimes there is nothing you can do to change things with GD (as in diet) if your body is not coping then insulin is hte best choice. There is/was nothing you could have done to change things."

which sort of made sense for me because i felt like i was beating myself that i didn't do the diet properly or my thought would be - if only i hadn't eatten this or not done this then maybe i wouldn't have ended up on insulin. But my body just couldn't cope this time around.

Now days i look back on my pregnancy with isaac and i've come to the conclusion of this - If i didn't follow the doctors with the diet, insulin, finger *****ing etc then if something happened to my baby then i would feel like the worse mother. In doing what they told me to do i was helping my little boy who is now 1 the best way possible even though i hated doing hte insulin, i hated being on insulin, i hated the diet change and everything GD related.

But we are ok now and that is what counts. Like someone else said think of it as medicine for my baby. Because that is what you are doing every time you take insulin you are helping your baby.

Hope this helps some of you are going through a hard time. I am still hoping it stays away this time around but i know in my heart that being twins and having it before that i will most likely get it. And then i hope you all will be around when i have my off days. :)

Totally agree with what the other ladies say re your body sometimes just needs the insulin and it's not in your control. I had a day where I really felt annoyed that i could have done more to avoid it, but the truth was that i did everything I could - my BSL's just went too high. Only other option would have been starving myself and that wouldn't have done myself or bubba much good!

Thanks for the congratses. We're doing very well, and in answer to the jaundice question, not necessarily for GD babies... well I was induced for his birth: 3 lots of prostin gel, waters broken & synto drip (at 39 weeks exactly). Labour was 12 hours and I had an epi after 7. He needed suction which popped off, so was born with the assistance of forceps. He had a graze on his head from the suction and a forceps bruise (which cleared very quickly). We were warned that he might have breathing problems but he was fine. He was admitted to nursery for 24 hours to monitor his BSL's which were all good (3.2, 3.6 and 3.2 or something like that!), but most of that time he was with us even though he was formally "admitted" so to speak. He was also given formula to keep his fluids/sugars up.

I was told that 90% of babies get jaundice. Because I'm 0+ and he's A+ that would have exacerbated the jaundice PLUS he had the bruising and scrape which would also have made it worse. My milk was slow to come in so he remained on formula for quite a while, which was actually a really good thing for the jaundice. We've now phased out the formula and he's been on 100% boobie milk for the last 3-4 days which I'm thrilled about. I didn't expect it, but in retrospect the formula top up was actually really good and helped keep the jaundice from getting worse, plus he's a really happy settled little guy and I think the fact he was well fed helped. He didn't lose that much weight and he's already over his birth weight. Because I'd been so psyched for him to be in Nursery to start with, once he went back in, I didn't find it too hard.

Oh and while he's not huge (I hadn't done sizing scans, but my obs had been concerned about size), they did do a manoevre at birth to prevent shoulder distocia (basically curled me into a ball - knees to chest) and he came out roofward so to speak! When I queried my obs about it (I thought it must have been just precautionary given he wasn't THAT big) his comment was that while he wasn't that big, I was very small and it was a very tight fit. So we feel like he came out at the right time. Oh and when he was put on my chest.... oooh just magical :loveshower:

Oh and while I was thrilled to have GD gone, my fructose malabsorption promptly played up and I spent most of my hossie time with the runs :( (sorry if TMI) and couldn't eat anything sweet anyway! One afternoon I was in tears after seeing the afternoon tea tray with all these gorgeous cakes that i STILL couldn't eat (too much wheat & sugar for me!). But it's finally settled and I've been able to have some cake (actually for my 35th birthday yesterday). OMG it was good.

Pollyanna - hope that you are getting some better answers now and everything is OK. Hopefully once the UTI passes then you can have a more relaxed few weeks before bub's comes.

I am new to this thread and i am hoping that you may be able to help or at least give some advice.
I had been diagnoised with Gestational Diabetes last week as they were not able to do the Glucose tolerance Test (3 hour test) as my fasting level was extremely high so i was diagnoised on the spot. Then on Thursday i went for my weekly check and i was put on insulin straight away as my levels were all over the place but my fasting levels were to high.
I am now scared as i have 8 weeks to go and so stressed taht i am going to have a huge baby. Thi sis my second child and i didnt have any of this except for preclampsia. None of my family have had it either and i am confused to why it has happened to me. My levels since taking the insulin throughout the day are appearing to be pretty good and on target but after 3 mornings my fasting levels are still high. I am seeing some doctors on Tuesday and hopefully i will get more info by then but i am just over whelmed with the whole thing and needed to vent to people who understand cause as much as my husband is really supportive i don't think he gets it.

Tracy - It's very scary when you're first diagnosed. But firstly, there is nothing you could have done to prevent GD. It's just one of those things. Not sure what the drs have told you or what you already know so please excuse me if I'm telling you stuff you have already heard.
There is a hormone that your placenta noramlly produces that inhibits the effects of your natural insulin. This is all normal, but it effects some more than others.
I was put on protaphane at night to help with my fasting levels (the ones that were affecting me) and in the last two weeks I was on novorapid with dinner).
Most of us have found insulin to suck the big one, but I have said a few times to look at it as medicine for bubs. It certainly helped me looking at it like that.
It isn't uncommon to have a big baby with GD, but it is not a given. You may be sent for sizing scans (just like a normal u/s but they take different measurements and guesimate the size), but these scans can be up to 20% out. I had a scan with Ethan (who is now 10 weeks old) at 36 weeks and he was measuring 8lb 3oz then. So was looking at being about 9lb full term. I was induced at 38 weeks because of their concerns. The drs recommended an epidural due to the higher risk of a c-section (my previous labor being induced and forceps - he was 8lb 3oz, this one being induced and GD babies are more at risk of needing a c/s). Well when the time came my labor lasted an hour and fifteen minutes, no time for an epi and he was only 7lb 10oz. So yes ther is a bigger risk of having a big bubs, but it's not always the case.

Not sure what else you want to know atm. Reading through our previous threads might help. Butu feel free to ask us anything. There are no stupid questions, most of us have already asked them at some stage anyway.

Sorry to hear you've got GD. It is very overwhelming. As Becci said there isn't anything you can do to prevent it. Some people just get it.
I hope your bubbba isn't really huge. We all probably had those same thoughts too when we found out. I know I did. I was so worried he'd be so massive and I wouldn't be able to have him naturally.
This is a great thread and we're all here to support you and answer any questions you have as best we can. I know what you mean about your DH, my DP was supportive mostly but I don't think he fully understood as he has never had to constantly think about food, levels and all that jazz all the time.

Welcome Tracy, I am sorry you have been diagnosed with GD. This is my 2nd pregnancy and I was diagnosed with GD about a month ago. I was never tested with my 1st pregnancy so not sure if I had it then or not. Like you I failed my fasting level and was not able to do the 2 hr GTT but they wanted to try again a week later and that time I was able to have it. However I was diagnosed with GD. Like the others have said, this is a great thread and ask as many questions as you need. I am still fairly new to it all as well so I am still learning but the girls have been great in helping me understand what is going on. I too understand about DH not fully understanding. Like Tennykins said they are supportive but don't know what it is like to constantly think about what foods you can or cant eat and about testing your bsl's at the right time.

Well I am managing my GD with diet alone still so far :dance: They have now told me that I can just check my bsl's every 2nd day if I want to. I am still finding myself testing though. Yesterday was the first day I didn't test and had a bit of a blow out with the food, I know it is naughty but my GD educator told every now and then wont hurt and I have been soooo good and strict on myself for the last month.

Well only 3 wks from tomorrow and I will be holding my bubba (my caesar booked for 3rd nov. Got to have a caesar but not due to GD). Cant wait for all this testing business to be over. I am still scared it wont go away after bubs is born though. I haven't had any sizing scans so have no idea how big my baby will be. I feel bigger with this pregnancy but I was also heavier to start off with. When they measure my tummy at my appointments it is measuring right on target which I guess is a good thing!!!

Thanks Becci reading your story about not having an overly huge baby has helped. It is also a relief to see that you were abole to have a natural birth also as a c/s has been a concern for me as i really want a natural like i did with my last baby.
Thanks Tennykins i must admit it is nice to know other people have been through this. Not one of my friends or family have had GD before so it is really hard to understand what is happening.
Leigh the hard thing with my DH is that he hasn't been able to attend any appointments with me so he is only hearing what i tell him and we all know what men are sometimes like if their wives are telling them they only seem to believe half of the info rather than if he was hearing it from the diabetes educator or obs he would understand more. What makes it hard also is that his ex had no problems with there pregnancy so that is what he knows easy pregnancies.
Well i had my appointment yesterday both with the Ob and Diabetes Professor and they have increased my insulin to nearly double the amount as my levels are still all over the place. My fundas height is 36 weeks when i am only 32+2 weeks, so they are sending me for a growth scan on Monday...i am keeping my fingers crossed that alot of it is fluid. As i am on insulin they seem to think that they may indcue me at 38 weeks but i guess i will know more the closer it gets.
Quick question when any of you were or are on insulin did you find that you are extremely tired and very lightheaded when your numbers were not on target? Does anyone know if stress can elevate your levels? Does anyone have diabetes meal plan that you may have used that also helped with reducing levels?
