Diabetes, PCOS and pregnancy

Hi,

My wife and I have been trying for around 18 months to fall pregnant without any luck. This has been because my wife has PCOS, I recently found out I had problems, and my wife also recently found out that she has type 2 diabetes. We had gotten to the point where we were about to try IVF but have just done 3 pregnancy tests which all returned positive!!

We will be going to see our local GP tomorrow to confirm, but I wanted to ask a few questions before we went to see our doctor.

I'm thinking we should try to book into an obstetrician who specialises in diabetes and PCOS. Are we able to book into any obstetrician who specialises in this type of thing, or do we normally get referred by our doctor? Although I'm overjoyed at finding out my wife is pregnant, I'm also very cautious and want the best care for her because I know the risks with the problems she has. Are there any obstetricians who would specialise in this type of thing in the South Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, or are they mainly in the city? Should we actually even be looking at an obstetrician, as I'm not even sure how much they cost!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Congratulations!
I think the advantage of going to an Ob is that you will get the same person the whole way though the pregnancy. However, I had gestational diabetes and went public and found the care to be excellent. I saw the same diabetes specialist every fortnight but saw a different Ob nearly every visit.

Hi, I have Pos as well, I had an Ob for falling pregnant but went public after a few not very nice private hospital stories scared us off of our closest private hospital! The most important thing is to find someone your wife feels comfortable with, most Ob will specialise in Pos as it's so popular these days. Congratulations on the I know it can be a struggle to fall pregnant, and it is truely wonderful news!
My care was done through a birthing unit run by midwifes, they were not concerned with the Pos part and after both births i went back to the Ob for a check up!

Thanks so much for the quick replies.

Snoopea - If we decide not to go through an Ob, or if we find that it's too expensive, do we just normally go through our local hospital? Is this something our local GP would refer us to, or do we have to make an appointment ourselves? You mentioned that the people you went to weren't concerned with your pcos..... is it less of a 'big deal' these days? I've been reading on the 'net about miscarriage rates around pcos and other things you need to look out for, and these concerns nearly outweighed our happiness last night!!

Artechim - do most public hospitals have a diabetes unit? My wife is seeing a diabetes person, but nothing to do with her pregnancy, so I'm not sure if she will/should continue seeing them.

Sorry for so many questions, I'm sure alot of thigns will be cleared up once we see our GP etc. It's just that it's been such a struggle for us to get pregnant, and after pretty much telling ourselves we won't get pregnant without IVF, this is really overwhelming and I want to make sure we're doing everything right!!

Goat, I got a referral to my hospital though my GP. Once a week there was a diabetes specialist at the ante-natal rooms. I would go on that day and see an OB and then the diabetes specialist.

Give your DW's diabetes person a call, tell them about the pregnancy and see if you should still be seeing them or someone who deals more with diabetes and pregnancy.

Try not to worry too much I am sure everything will be fine for you, DW and your little miracle baby.

Congratulations on your BFP! That's fantastic!

I have diabetes this time around, and I was lucky to be able to see a Diabetes educator at the same practice as my OB. So it was easier for me, and I felt the ease of them being able to contact each other about my case if need be. (I'm a worry wart, so I worry alot about things)

I'm not much help, sorry, but I hope everything goes fantastic with you all.
