Possible (non pregnancy) causes of oedema?

I have recently started getting really swollen feet and ankles. Not every day, just some days. I had it pretty badly when pg with DDin particular, but also with DS to a lesser extent. I have recently had my bp taken and it was normal. I am not taking medications, just taking a multivitamin and liquid vitex. I don't think I have too much salt, I don't add it to my food, so it's just what is in foods naturally, or what it's made with. What other causes could there be? I am on my feet alot, but have always been a busy person, my jobs is a frantic on-your-feet job (childcare worker) and when I get home I don't really sit alot either, but I've never had oedema before unless pg.

    TIA!

My sister had some major kidney dramas - and the fluid retention was her first symptom.
If youre worried - I'd check it out,

    I hope its nothing!

I used to have lots of problems relating to premenstrual swelling of feet and ankles. Really bad. Good way to make an already crabby moody tired woman even crabbier LOL.

For this reason I think you should see your dr to rule out blood sugar, hormonal or like others said kidney or BP issues.

My swelling changed when I learnt about the principles of low-GI eating. This seems to suggest there was (for me) some sort of homonal-blood-sugar related effect. I also learnt how to pump my feet & ankles (like they tell you to when you're on a long airplane flight) as it's the specific squeezing of the calf muscles that helps the venous return. This might help when you get a chance to sit down.

Thanks ladies I appreciate your responses.

MD, I have just finished AF a few days ago so it's not premenstral. I haven't really taken notice of when I get it though so I don't know if it's related to my cycle.

I was kind of thinking people would say 'it's just because you're on your feet alot, sit down and relax more' , lol!! I didn't really think about the possibility of it being something more serious! I will go to the doctor when I get a chance.

I used to get this quite a lot, still do sometimes. It can be premenstrual, if I haven't had enough water to drink, if I've been sitting too much...but fluid intake is the big one for me.
When I upped my water I really noticed a difference.

As the other have said if you're really worried I would go back to your GP (mine was pretty blase about it too )

There are a few medical reasons that could cause it and I really think it would be well worht seeing your GP to get it checked out.
My mum has it as part of a larger condition.
