My first period after having the Mirena in was very long and very heavy. From memory, the bleeding eased after about 10 days but I continued to bleed lightly (more than 'spotting') for 9 weeks. My OB told me I needed to be patient with the Mirena for 6 months!
After about 8 months I no longer had a period at all! Yipee!!!
BUT... after having the Mirena in for approx 3 years I went to my doctor complaining of WILD mood swings, weight gain and headaches (symptoms I'd had for approx 12 months). She immediately removed the Mirena and within a month I was back to my old self. My doctor told me she removes at least 2 Mirena's a week from women complaining of the same symptoms I suffered. Having said that, I have a girlfriend who had the Mirena inserted at the same time I did, and she has never had any problems and loves the fact she doesn't have a period.
So, I don't mean to put a dampener on your mood but I would encourage you to be aware of the possible side effects of the Mirena. My husband and family had been telling me for months that something was wrong with my moods (OMG, and my temper!) but I thought that THEY were all being nasty and there was nothing wrong with me! Had I not had the Mirena removed, I don't think my marriage would have survived - I was IMPOSSIBLE to live with. I was short tempered and impatient with everyone, including my kids.
I'm sorry - I know you only asked about the bleeding!! Yes, it is normal. Good luck with the Mirena, I hope you are one of the women it works well for!
