Mirena IUD?

I am having a few bleeding issues though. For the first 6 months i had random spotting, then it settled into a 5-7 day "period" (1 day of light bleeding and the rest spotting) and 2-4 days of spotting mid-cycle, which wasn't heavy enough to put me off DTD (just warned DP about it, should he decide to give me oral) and was fine. Then i had a weird one where i had spotting for 5 days, off for 2, on for 6, off for 4, on for 5 again...blah blah blah. Now it seems i'm back to my general twice a month spotting but in between i'm also getting (TMI!!!) a little spotting after going #2, and possibly after sex (the only times i've noticed it i was going to the potty after sex so i don't know which it was).

I had mine put in just over a year ago and it's been such good contraceptive i'm reluctant to have it removed over this - besides i don't have many other options and we don't want to even THINK about ttc until the end of next year at the earliest... I guess i can just put up with it...? Is anyone else getting this?

Hoobley, I havent had mine in long enough to really be able to compare, but I have heard that some women have taken alot longer to get back to 'normal' so to speak, I do tend to get more sptotting after #2 and DTD tho and I think its because of #2 require a little pushing and well DTD would be like poking and proding your cervix so I think thats why that happens, yeah I wouldnt remove it either, I dont have any other options the pill makes me really sick, besides that I forget to take it and dont want another suprise and well thats really all that I would consider doing besides the Mirena.

Cooper did you get it all checked out, I know my strings are really hard to find, they are only just peeping out of my cervix so no I dont think they should be visible to you and coming right down like that.

Ourlux, I know you said this to me before so I have been keeping an eye on it, it hasnt effected me in that way at all, I am actually finding it has helped a little, I say deffinately give it a go, its not that hard for them to put in especially close to the birth of a baby, and its easy for them to remove it, so if in the end you ahte it you can have it removed, my dr has said the whole removal process takes less than 2 min from start to finish and the actual removal is about 2 secs of that so I kind of figured if after a year I hated it I would just get it out, but I gave myself a year as it can take a very long time for it to settle. but so far so good I am relly liking it,
I like the fact I am safe and dont have to think about it at all except to do a quick check once a month and thats it, its a great peace of mind.

Me I am still spotting on and off somedays nothing others a bit, I am still happy with it, have not had any side effects as yet and I am posative its helped with my moods around AF time, I am not so quick to snap and feel so much calmer with in myself its great. it will be 3 months at the end of Jan since having it put in.

Amym - how long have you been spotting for now hun? Actually I just reread your post and we must have had them put in around the same time.

I am upto about 10 weeks since I had it put in and I am still spotting, but aside from that it is fantastic. I have used the pessaries, but that does not have seemed to make a difference with it.

I have not noticed a reduction in libido - actually the complete opposite, I have totally got my mojo back and I would say ity is because I am now not worried in the back of my head about falling pregnant.

I wish I had known about these IUDs earlier, cause I would have used one earlier.

How soon after the birth can i get it in????

I got a referral to a gyno at my 6 week check up. It took me while to get around to going but if I hadn't been slow she would have put it in straight away.
She made me do a blood test to check I wasn't up the duff and then I had it put in when the results were back.
I was just thinking the other day when I was walking down the tampon/pad aisle in the supermarket how much money it's saved me.
I know that AF is due because I feel a bit bloated and crampy but it's so light that it's nothing more than coloured CM. It doesn't even need a liner.

Re the libido - I haven't noticed a reduction other than that caused by having 2 littlies to look after. In a way it's liberating because there's no worries about condoms and oopsy babies.

I was hoping I wouldn't need to walk down the tampon/ pad isle too, but my periods still come like clock work. Hopefully this may change in the future. Come on menopause!!!

RE: Libido - We i have actually noticed an INCREASE!!! :dance: Ofcourse because i've had a increase DP has had decrease! :wall:

I also had a few other issues going on before i had the Mirena in aswell. I was quite a hairy person and was overweight. Well i have noticed the hair is falling out and i am starting to slim up a bit! Quite happy about that acutally!

I am a 52 female from Perth who has an appointment to have an internal camera examination and Mirena inserted at King Edward Hospital, Perth in 3 weeks, but am undecided. I had been having heavy bleeding for 3 weeks, now just spotting since beginning of Jan. and have just started menopause (so the blood tests say). I am very nervous re the IUD, possible complications, hospitals, and anaesthetics. Any advice would be fantastic.

Hi there DeeSue, as I'm not in your situation I don't really have any advice for you. The procedure was a bit uncomfortable but not painful. I'm not really sure of the reasons you are getting the Mirena, I have it for contraception.

Hi there DeeSue, I found the insertion a bit uncomfortabl. My Dr did it without the local but TBH I think that the needle for the local would have been equally painful.
My ob just did it in her rooms so I didn't go to hospital for it.
I haven't had any complications with it. I went for the checkup at 6 weeks and haven't thought about it since.

Oh I forgot (thanks Chloe - it was a while ago!), I did have the needle with the local and that really didn't hurt. The insertion didn't hurt, more like pressure, but I did have some minor cramping afterwards (think that's normal).

I had no pain having mine put in. My mum died of cervical/endometrial cancer and i would definitely have the Mirena fitted when i am perimenopausal to protect me from endometrial cancers. The risks are something only you can decide on. Because there is a family history of endometrial cancer for me, and i have had a Mirena fitted without complications it would be definitely worth it to me.

I went to the Dr because I had a sudden heavy period and when I got an ultrasound they couldn't find it! I still haven't got my detailed report and I doubt that I'll have time to do so for a few weeks.

I had to buy condoms :doh:

Well i have been diognosed with ammorhea(sp??)....

Went to the Dr's last week cause my period was 3 days late after having 2 cycles arrive bang on 28 days. (I got Brent to insert a couple of fingers and have a feel around and he could feel the threads.) Dr sent me for an u/s to check positioning and blood tests to check hormone levels.

Well everything came back fine. Mirena in the same place, hormones fine. They just said that i am in the 30-40% of women who develop early ammorhea.

To be honest, i am not happy about this. I feel more comfortable having a small bleed every month. I feel like i am keeping something in there thats meant to be coming out.

The dr did explain how the mirena hormones work though. Apprently it tricks your body into thinking that its constantly in the first days of your cycle. ie Lining of the uterus "clean". Still makes me wonder though.....

Sara, I loved not having my period. I don't think that it's healthy to have your period too often. Modern western women menstruate more than any other women in history. In earlier times repeated pregnancies and extended breastfeeding restricted the number of periods we had so our bodies aren't really designed for regular monthly bleeds for so long.

Sara i still have light bleeding twice a month...

Dach - Yeh i actually read that not getting your period while on the Mirena has shown to increase your HB levels!!! I could'nt believe it. All my life they have told us that you are only meant to lose a teaspoon on blood whlie on your period. How can a blood loss that small affect your HB levels!!! Odd...

Normal bloodloss on AF is 25-80ml. A teaspoon is 5ml - so i guess if you lost the minimum you could lose 5ml/day? Is that what you meant?

I used a diva cup before i got Mirena put in, and i lost about 80ml most months (the cup has a measuring scale on it so you can see how much is in it) - i used to fill it full twice on day 1 (40ml) then full once on day 2 (20ml) then just about 5ml/day for 3 or 4 more days. So 75-80ml in total.

A normal blood donation is lots - 470ml-ish - though you can only do that once every 4 months - 4 of my periods would be a loss of 320ml... Never thought about all this before :)

Hoobley - Teachers told us that. I am pretty sure i have heard it again in my adult life. I never believed cause i've always had a history of heavy period since they started at the age of 10.

I am pretty sure they said teaspoon. It could've been tablespoon though. But i know for sure, i was told, it was one or the other. It also could've been per day aswell. Its been a long time since i've been at school!! :redface:

There is a thread somewhere about menstrual cups hun, i'll have a hunt later and post a link (about to go swimming).

They're basically a rubber or silicon cup you wear inside your vagina which catches the blood. You then remove, empty, wash and re-insert it a few times a day (3 or 4 - less than a pad or a tampon for me anyway).

They come in 2 sizes, B(efore baby) and A(fter baby) though my B still fits me even though i've had DD. I don't use it all that much now because the suction can pull the IUS out if you're careless (you have to break the suction before you remove which is fine but no good if you're in a hurry) and i barely bleed enough to need a pad, let alone a cup!

I don't think my periods would be heavy enough anyways. Or long enough for that matter.

I got my periods on Saturday and they finished lastnight. So i bled for 2 1/2 days.
