Hi everyone, I've got my first d&c on Monday and I'm freaking out just a little and I'm sorry if I'm going to put this wrong but I have a need to know.
What I need to know is what is going to happen?
How long the procedure is going to take?
Will I need to bring anything to the hospital such as pads etc?
I'm guessing it's a day procedure, but what happens if I react badly to the anethestic (sp)?
Is there anything that could go wrong?
What will the bleeding be like?
I think that's all for now, thank you for any advice and sorry if I offended anyone.
I've had 2 D&C's both were different. The 1st one was done at a womans day surgery clinic place, I had to take my own pads. I had an appointment time, I got there, they got me in a gown, than a warm blanket over the top and I sat there and waited with my hair in a net, reading a magazine. They weigh you 1st and the anethetist asks you a bunch of questions, someone is pretty much with you the whole way, you hop on the table and they put another warm blanket on you and before you know it you are waking up in recovery and they are feeding you a biscuit and cordial, than you hop up and eat a sandwich and a cup of tea in a recovery lounge (not a room). I had to get antibiotics from the pharmacy after that one which gave me really bad colic pains for the whole week which was the worst thing but the bleeding was like a normal period. The 2nd D&C was at a private hospital with my OB, it was nicer because I was waiting in my room in my bed so felt a little more relaxed, I didn't have a set surgery time but because of the comfort of the waiting conditions I didn't mind so much, all I knew is that it would be before lunch. They gave me antibiotics through a drip that time at the end of the opperation so I didn't have any of the bowl problems like the 1st D&C. Again the bleeding was like a normal period and there was no pain at all. I didn't have to take any pads to the private hospital just comfy clothing and a change on underwear I think... It would be best to check what you need to bring with the hospital you are going to. With the 1st D&C I think I got there around 1pm and left around 5:30 and with the 2nd I got there at 6am and left around 3pm?
What they are actually doing is giving you a good clean out up there and taking out any products that could still be in there. Because your so clean in there it can make concieving again easier. Good luck with everything
The Dr's and nurses will be very kind and caring, they certainly have been to me every time I have had surgery. You will be out of it for about 15-20 mins only and most of that is in the op room and recovery. Like cherished1 has posted, it is like a normal period afterwards, my Obs let me know I may not bleed for a few days as a 'plug' forms but when that passes it is just like normal.
I have a bad reaction to GA's but the nurses are prepared for that. They give you lots of time to wake up, I wake up very groggy and feeling very sick. They sit me up, give me a drink and encourage me to eat. Unfortunately most of that comes straight back up But they can give you something to stop you feeling sick and the nurses are soooo caring.
Mine was much like cherished explained, only mine was through the public system. I did have to wait for ages, but it was over fairly quickly and I left very soon after as I felt 'great' (YKWIM). I didn't have to take anything and since I wasn't there long after, didn't really need anything.
Basically I went into daysurgery, got booked in, waited. They wheeled me to theatre, a cannula was inserted and I was taken into the room. Don't remember much after that (but I do know what happens having done many - just didn't know how much detail you wanted) and woke up a bit groggy in recovery.
Was there about 1/2hour then back to day surgery and home soon after.
Bleeding for me wasn't heavy, but neither is AF. Had a normal cycle straight away.
If there are probs with bleeding or the anaesthetic they will usually transfer you to the regular surgical ward and keep you overnight, but if it's something they have space for and it's early in the day then you will just stay in the recovery area of day surgery and the staff there will monitor you.
