    TTC after d&c?

I had a d&c on Monday for a mm/c and it wasn't until the next day that I realised I had received absolutely NO instructions or guidance on what to do now. The only instructions I received during the entire time between that last u/s and Monday were "be at the hospital at this time". Nothing else.

All I can think about now is TTC again, but I know sometimes women are advised to wait. I don't want to wait, but at the same time I definitely don't want an increased risk of a repeat m/c. Is there a good reason to wait? Is it safe to TTC straight away? Does anyone have any advice? I feel lost not knowing what to do now.

    Hi hun,

After my D&C (for retained placenta after losing Noah) I was told that the main reason to wait is to have one cycle of AF, just so you have an LMP to go by, otherwise everything is fine.

It took DH & I 19 months to conceive Noah, DTD pretty much every single day. After the D&C I fell pregnant with DS2 my 3rd cycle after 1 time with no protection, so the D&C helped me become extra fertile I believe. I have heard a lot of people find it happens quickly after a D&C too.

    Wishing you all the best

The hospital told me to wait one cycle but didn't say why. My GP told me to wait one cycle but said a lot of people try straight away anyway and if we do decide to ttc straight away, nothing will happen...

Can you call the hosp and ask, just to be sure?

    Sorry for your loss.

I was told to wait but didn't and we fell pregnant with DD on the second cycle after D&C.

I was told to wait one cycle - but was heading back for IVF, so at least I was given a reason.

I did conceive naturally 6 weeks to the day after my d&c with no AF having shown up.

I completely agree with Lisa - the d&c increased my fertility.

Big hugs hun. I'm so sorry for your loss

I was told to wait 3 months. I didnt. I think that is for emotional reasons, well thats what I heard anyway. I was nervous about it but I thought that my body was in charge anyway so it wouldnt do anything it couldnt do. If it wasnt ready to concieve then it wouldnt. I was devistated after the miscarriage but I didnt want to wait in case I waited too long (i am late 30's). I concieved on the 2nd cycle. Definitely more fertile after a d&c !

So sorry you had to go through this in the first place.

    Good Luck!

I think it depends on the circumstances of the miscarriage ie if its a molar pregnancy you are told to wait a longer time. But as a standard pregnancy miscarriage and then D&C I dont think there is a 'protocol'. I found for us, like Lisa, after a D&C we conceived quickly. Took 5 years of unsuccessful IVF to fall pregnant the first time (a BIG suprise) had a miscarriage, D&C done 4 weeks later and I was pregnant with DD in the 2nd cycle following.

HTH and good luck with TTC!

Thanks ladies. I've read two different schools of thought on the reasons for waiting - one says it's just for dating a new pg but the other claims the lining is thinner and there is an increased risk of m/c. It's reassuring to hear that none of you were told it was the lining theory. I O late anyway, so LMP is never a good option for dating a pg for me.

Thanks again and congratulations to those of you expecting your THB.

Thanks ladies. The d&c was a for a missed miscarriage. After an almost perfect dating scan at 7w1d, our first OB appt at 10w3d showed bub measuring 8wks and without a heartbeat. I had the d&c at 11wks and still had no sign of m/c'ing naturally.

It took us 3.5 years, 6 IUI, 5 IVF, 1 FET and 1 (naturally conceived between IVF and naturally m/c'd) chem pg to get DD, which I know is less than some but was a hard on us nonetheless. It seemed a dream come true to get a BFP so soon after starting TTC#2.

It's so encouraging to hear success stories from soon after a m/c. Thank you for sharing them. I don't know if we'll get lucky (?) again with another natural conception, but I don't think I can bear to be sitting on my hands just waiting. After having both natural conceptions end in m/c, I'm not even sure how I'd cope with another natural conception, but not trying would be worse right now. (But, I would wait if I knew there was a good reason.)

OceanPrincess, I hope you don't have much longer to wait for your THB.
