Aim to get DS toilet-trained by 2yo...am I dreaming??

Hi all,

I must admit that TT has been the last thing on my mind...until now. We've decided to go to UK for 5 weeks when DS will be 2.5yo. BUT...isn't this about the time you usually TT? I have no idea TBH.

But, if I aim to have him TT by the time he is 2, is that reasonable? When would I need to start do you think?

Sorry if these are really silly questions, this is literally the first time I have even thought about TT, and I have no idea how I"m going to go about it.

I think it depends on each child, you could always give it a go but may find that trying to force the issue could delay the process.
DD1 was interested in TTing before she turned 2 but is not 100% TT'd now, she will use the potty, she can tell me at times when she needs to go but still isn't 100% there.

I know children who are TT'd by the age of 2 and others who aren't by the age of 4, i personally went with DD and when she seemed ready.

I think you might be setting yourself up for disappointment if you decide to TT by 2. He might be ready but IMO it's more likely that he won't be.

Each child is different. I say why not give it a go? The best advice I can give you is to not put any pressure on yourself or him. It will only end in disaster. My DD1 was TT day and night at 22 months and DD2 TT day and night at 19 months so it's definitely do-able but it really does depend on your child and how they adapt to the whole idea. Give it a go. If it works, great! If it doesn't, then just wait until you are back from the UK. Five weeks won't make or break toilet training good luck xx

Totally doable. But i agree it depends on the child. Dd was 18 months when she was fully tt. She started by taking off her own nappy when she had gone to the loo. She just didn't like the feeling obviously. I was lucky I think!

I honestly don't think he'll be ready. Boys tend to train much later than girls.

No harm in trying, but don't be too disappointed if he's not able to at that point in time. My boy at 26 months knows what the potty is for and will try to go if he's sitting on it, but doesn't have the ability to tell me if he needs to go. I'm planning to wait until next summer when he's 3.

DS tt in one week at 2yrs 3months. totally easy, better than the girls and no accidents now in the 2 months since. was the same week i had molly....crazy hehe

so yes i say totally possible and enjoy your holiday!

as others have said, every child is different. My first was tt at 2.5years, my second at 2 years, and the twins one was 2.5 anf the other was 3. If he seems like he might be ready then by all means try, but they sell nappies in the UK if he is still in them when you are there so you will be fine

DS1 & 2 were both TT'd by the time they were 2. They were both pretty easy, I had an easier time than my friend who had girls about the same age at the same time. I agree though each child is different. I don't know if I'm going to be as lucky with DS3, he is very easily distracted and very busy, always on the go! He is starting to become aware of when he is 'going' now which is good but I don't think he'll be ready in a hurry.

I wouldn't worry if you wait until you get back. Even if he is TT'd before you go, the change in environment could be a bit of a set back. All depends on the child. Good luck with whatever you decide

I found my girl easier than my boy, too. But yep, every child is unique. A friend was studying psychology at uni and they were doing a child development unit and in it they were told that kids that are toilet trained before 2 are more likely to regress/have accidents etc later on than kids trained after 2. Don't know how much there is in that, but it really is an individual thing.

We went skiing when DD2 was 2.5 so I tried training her around 2 like you're planning to do - she had no clue! I persisted for a week then decided that it wasn't worth the stress and gave up till afterwards. In some ways, it's actually easier to travel when they're in nappies - none of the "I need to do a weeeeeee!!!!" when you have no idea where the loos are or you're on final descent in the plane So yep, give it a go, but don't be too worried if it doesn't work out

Now I'm scared! How much later do they regress? My DD1's been fully TT for over a year now with no regression :s

My DD was fully TT at 18 months with no regression at all. She was mature for her age and independent and liked doing what adults were doing so it was easy for us.
My niece was semi TT at 3.5 years but still having lots of accidents.
It really does depend on the child.
