Hi all, my DD is 12 months old and we are considering beginning toilet training. She has grown to hate having her nappy changed (we use cloth) and really fusses and gets herself into a state during the change. Daycare have told me she does the same for them, otherwise she is really happy and fine. I think it's the lying down thing as I can change her nappy with her standing up without any problems but that doesn't work when it's a poo!
We bought a potty but she hates it and I've realised she doesn't feel safe on it so I have found a potty chair and am going to purchase this.
I've read Early Start Potty Training by Linda Sonna and there was a heap of interesting things in there but I am just wondering if anyone has tried TT at this age and what their experiences were? I don't want to force it and I'm fine if she chooses to hate the potty but I see no harm in getting her used to the idea and knowing what it's for - that way when she IS ready, we'll be a step ahead.
Check out Elimination communication, it will have great tips for you.
We started TT DD1 just after she was 6mths, very casual, part time and she was out of nappies at 12 mths with occasional accidents until 16-18 mths...
All we did was lots of nappy free time and sitting on the potty after meals and normal wee times...
Most important thing is to have no stress associated with it, don't get cross at accidents, choose your times and places for nappy free time, we have floorboards so we have loads of it and summer/warm weather is easier.
Hopefully some of the other EC girls will pop in with more advice
We started DD at 11 months, she chose it not me. She would walk up to the shower climb in and wee whenever her nappy came off! So we bought a toilet seat and her little bum would fall through, so we ended up with a potty. We would at first, just put her on there when she woke up and before her shower. Then she went backwards a bit and hated it so we stopped for a week and started again with the same. reading books etc while she sat and waited to wee. 18 months and 1 week and she takes herself to the toilet through the day, says wee and away she goes that said we can not get her to do so with knickers on so in this house, she is currently knickerless! If we get her to wee before we shop, she will ask to go half way through and then wee's when we get home. Gently prompting, making it fun and oodles of praise, as Im sure you are fully aware. We clap and wooohooo most of the time still.
Good luck with it, just remember DD will have accidents, it will seem like you are getting nowhere and then it will all just come together!

go to the Tribal baby site and have a good read, heaps of great Elimination Communication ideas there. i have met mums who EC'd their bubs from birth, from a few months old, all different ages really - just adapt the ideas to use with a one year old.
i used the tips to help me tt my 2.5yo - worked great.
Thanks so much for your support ladies!! I really appreciate it
We're going to buy the potty chair and put it in the play area for a few days for her to get used to it, then progress to her sitting on it with clothes on and then introduce the whole tt thing from there. Hopefully it will all go well but plenty of time.
