I am due to have bubba #4 this September and am interested in cloth nappies. I have wasted sooo much money on disposable not to mention my stinking bin and the impact on the environment makes me shudder. So where do I start? What are the choices I have to choose from. How many will I need? It will be more cost effective... won't it?
It does become more cost effective, but even more when you resuse them on subsequent babies. As a general suggestion, I would purchase second-hand nappies to try different brands, and work out which styles suit your bub.
Choices are : flat nappies; fitted nappies; prefolds; pockets and all-in-one (or all-in-two)
Flats, fitted and prefolds will need covers - covers come in plastic, PUL, wool and polar fleece. Plus more interesting stuff like minkee
Materials for nappies are: cotton / bamboo / hemp
Stay-dry layers usually have polar (or micro) fleece
Liners can be added to reduce the "wet" feel, these can be raw silk (good for nappy rash), polar fleece (microfleece), flushable and disposable.
Confused yet?
If you want to ease into it, I'd suggest getting small-sized nappies, just a couple - not newborn size unless your bub is very tiny or premmie, as you won't get a lot of use from them. 7 nappies would start you off for a day's use, and if you wash them daily, you could use them every second day and alternate with disposables.
What some people do is buy a couple of nappies, or use flats until they "earn" a pack of disposables, then use that money to buy a new cloth nappy.
If you can get to a baby expo, then you'll be able to touch them. Hope this helps.
Have a look at the cloth nappy threads, I think there are a couple of cloth for beginners sticky threads.
I have been doing cloth for the last 2.5 years, I hope it works out cheaper! But it does feel nice not to be throwing out massive piles of disposables.
Omg once you go cloth you never go back!
I bought some MCN's but have found I prefer the old fashioned terry flats! They aren't as puffy, they clean and dry so easily and they are so cheap! Just buy a pack from Big W, buy a BBH nappy cover (or any other brand you like) and get a box of liners, and a 3pack of Snappi nappy fasterners and you are all set! Cheap as chips!
I can't bear using disposables anymore, and you know, the minute I stopped, DD never got nappy rash again.
Also, I save SO much money. I honestly don't know how people afford using disposables.
Hey, if you get the hang of cloth nappies and love it, may as well cut up and old towel or other soft material and make cloth wipes too! Just have them stacked next to a tiny bowl of water, and you'll save more money. No more nasty chemical wipes.
Haha hope I didn't just overwhelm you. Cloth is awesome!
YES!!! I just bought my first MCN's and I love them!!!!!!!
I have itti bitti tutto's and Pop-In originals... I use disposables overnight though cause I don't like the smell lol..
Baby beehinds have a huge sale on their hemp nappies atm. Just google them.
