Night toilet training??

My DS is 4.5 and has been toilet trained during the day for about 12months now. So far he is still wearing a night nappy and he has always woken up wet. Lately he has asked why he still has to wear a nappy and then this week he asked to not wear one at all. I said ok.

We have spoken about him having to get out of bed if he needs to wee and that we'd be really excited if he woke up dry. On the first night he did get up at one stage as he left a light on but woke up wet anyway. The other two nights he as woken up wet. Last night at 11pm when i went to bed he was wet and i got him up and changed him and his sheets (and put a nappy on so he'd atleast get a good nights sleep warm and dry).

My question is - Is this the right time for him? Similarly to the day time training do you allow them to wet to get them used to having to wake to go to the toilet or should i be waiting until he's woken up dry to know he's ready??

I really want it to work for him because he obviously wants to try but so far no success. I did say that when he wakes up dry we'll buy him a special toy which may or may not be a good way to do it!?

I'd love for him to be out of nappies but i am in no way pushing for it. If he's ready though i'll help him along, i'll wash all i need to to help him get there.

How have you had success??

I am thinking of tackling the same hurdle as you! I don't have any suggestions but I will be checking back!

I was very patient with the day time and was doing the same with the night, but him wanting to do it makes me a little more inclined to help it along. We'll see if we get any help/suggestions

My almost 5 year old DS is still in nappies at night. He has been toilet trained during the day for almost 2 years.

I believe his body with learn control on its own as there is nothing I can do to help. After all, he is asleep so doesn't feel the usual sensations.

I just make sure he goes to the toilet immediately before bed and hope. So far, he has never had a dry night.

Maybe you can try the night pull-ups. They are like jocks/undies but more absorbent.

Otherwise, maybe you can wake him up about midnight for a toilet run.

my Ds is 4 and half and has just stopped waking up for the last 2 weeks..expect one night.

we just make a big deal out of it espeically daddy, i tell my Ds you're sure a big boy, its ok accidents happen,and when he is dry make the biggest fuss.

he goes to the toilet before bed, my Dh used to wake him up..no drinks before bed.

My DS is 2.5yrs old and is nearly TT overnight.

He is fully TT of a day and now I have noticed his nappies arent wet of a night so I will be letting him sleep without them in the next week or so and see what happens.

I think you are meant to reduce fluids before bed... make sure they use the toilet before bed and then once you start to get dry nappies or pull ups then they are ready, Letting them get "wet" doesnt really teach them anything .. Maybe no drinks after dinner?

I personally waited til they were waking up dry. Ds was only about
18 months old, the girls were well over 3.

Dd2 is back in night nappies full time at 6. We'll be checking that out more later on the year.

I had planned to do the same as Clover and wait until they wake up dry, but when I forgot a nappy one night she just managed, and I now have to get her up in the middle of the night to wee...what a pain that is.
DD was nearly 5 after TTing in the day before 2.5.
It sounds like he's just not ready.

Oh and don't let him listen to anyone who tells him something detrimental about it....my MCHN told me it was highly abnormal for her not to be dry at 4 overnight....then I asked on here should've trusted my gut.

I was always thinking i'd just wait until he was dry which would then be my indication that he's ready for no nappies but with him actually asking i wanted to give him the chance to give it a go. It's been very gentle, the last thing i want to do is create any confidence issues, so there'e been lots of encouragement and praise. Like i said i'm not pushing for it, it's just him asking to give it a go.

Trouble is now he's really determind to not wear the nappy.... So i might be changing the sheets every morning for a little while... It's all good we'll figure it out.

Thanks so much ladies, the toileting issue is clearly one of those things when they all get there in their own time.

DS was dry at night about a week after day TTing. However, he stayed in nappies for a few months just in case. He had accidents maybe once a month. He's had one in the past 4 months. So it isn't completely failsafe.

We went from nappies to training pants after a couple of months. We used cloth training pants so they were still pants and big boy pants et cetera, but they were pants that meant I didn't have to worry if there were an accident. Would that be an acceptable compromise for your son?

You never know... maybe that determination is all you need. Plenty of kids just decide thats it & that is it.

Although I don't see our night ending up that way. DD doesn't mind pull ups, but hates nappies... we're out of pull ups. She's decided sh just has to go without... fabulous!

My 2.5yo DS asked not to wear a nappy about 2 weeks or so after TT during the day. From the time we ditched day nappies, I had been encouraging him not to wee in his night nappy. He was often dry in the morning, but not always. So when he asked to wear jocks at ngiht I said ok. We've had a few accidents, but most nights are dry. I think he was just ready. The only other thing I can suggest is using a cloth nappy at night that will allow him to feel wet. And limit evening drinks.

I could try cloth... He might find it a little unusual, i use them with DS2 and DD but i never used them with him. Thanks for that idea gypsy

Clover - I'm hoping the determintion is enough for him because it would be great for him to feel proud of himself knowing he made it happen.

I haven't read through so someone may have already suggested this...you can get a Conni or Kerri or Brolli bed sheet that goes over the bottom sheet. It saves you having to change sheets everyday and you can wash and dry these very quickly. I have two for those days when I can't wash and dry in the same day.

Thanks Heather, i have one mat thing that i tried on top of the sheet and it moved around too much and DS ended up wetting the sheets and underlay

So we're back to it being under the sheets but i need to look into more options of having them on top and having them not move. I'll look into the ones you suggested thank you
