I just checked mine to and it specifically said nappies CAN go in there (or maybe they mean empty nappies)

What CAN go into your Garbage Bin:
Food packaging
Food waste
Non-recyclables
Plastic bags, garbage bags
Nappies
Broken household items
Grass clippings and small garden prunings.

What CANNOT go into your Garbage Bin:
No building waste
No car parts or car batteries
No car oil
No syringes/needles
No chemicals
No paint
No medicines or medical waste
No hot ashes
No gas
Please do not put recyclable items in your garbage bin. Put them into your recycling bin. See Recycling for details.

with the dog poo we always put it in our compost along with the chicken poo ect.

Not really recommended to put dog poo in the compost if you use commercial worming treatments as they will kill off the good worms in the compost. (someone can correct me if I am wrong)

DH used to camera the sewers and now deals with treatment plants. The worst things for blockages that he had seen are tampons and nappies. Yes some people flush the whole nappy. Also the problem is greater these days due to less water from water conservation methods going down the system. The sewers need a minimum flow to keep everything moving.

hmmmm I'm now wondering how "illegal" it is? IYKWIM.

Ok, not recommended, but that's different to illegal. Seems some have checked local council sites etc & it says nothing of the sorts....both on here & other sites I've just looked at. I've just tried looking up information & I can't find (happy to be shown) anything that actually say it's "illegal". Most the info I found was parent forums such as this with similar thread started saying it says on the packet & it doesn't say anything in regards to being illegal. Hmmmmm just a thought.

No dog or cat poo in compost but more cos they are meat eaters - you can get separate dog poo toilet compost thingos.

Not illegal here either. I think if it was there would be ALOT more information about it.

There used to be a company that provided special bins for sposies but I'm not sure they are around any more...pity.

Just thought I would post this link - bound to make your head hurt and the conclusions are pretty logical but makes for interesting reading if you are into this sort of thing.

As far as environmental impact, this study found:

Although I found a place in NZ that actually accepts disposables and converts them into compost :dance:

The crystals in sposies are the same as the stuff that they use as water crystals in gardens. I glove up and chuck the innards of a nappy in with my mulch every now and then.

I saw that when I was in NZ just recently Maz - awesome! - and a WAHM run business ;)
They do the same thing in Holland I think it is... a fabulous idea, there is absolutely no waste from the process, everything is reusd or recycled. Quite amazing really. They did a dtory about it on TV not long ago

We did the nappy recycling thing here when it was here. But they had to close down the site or something due to the machinery and not being able to get parts or something. I can't remember now. But it was great, it only cost 7.95 per week and IMO that was more than worth it.

ETA: Ok we were told it was a machinery problem... but it appears that they couldn't resell the plastic on or something of the like. But then that could be viscous rumors because you know how people get with things like this.

I must admit that using spoise the poo went in the bin 99% of the time, only down the loo when it was realy solid and round. And addind liners is just more wasted money in a disposable.

Now that I am using cloth I use flushable liners when out so that i can flush the poo down the loo and not walk around with a pooey nappy.

I have just read the wbsite that maz linked to in an earlier post, wow, what a fantastic idea!! why the hell do we not have that here in australia?? can we lobby our councils or something to implement something the same here? I love the fact that it includes sanitary items as well, have never flushed tampons, well, I did once and it caused all sorts of problems!! was rather embarrassing!! I do know of some people who flush pads though as well (ughh!)

I use cloth 98% of the time now, (just lurve my ittis!!!) now that jbaby is on solids its so much easier to just dump and flush, when he was in sposies it was all like nb bf baby poo, too hard to get off, so it all went in the bin.
