Ok so a family member stocks MCN's and these four are the ones she stocks:
GreenKids
Weenies
Pea Pods
Bum Genius
Which out of the 4 would you prefer and why? This is our first little bubba so obviously I have never used them before and would love to use MCN's over disposables.. What I look for is something thats not going to leak and something thats going to be easy to use and comfortable for the baby.. I would have a look at each of them but we don't live in the same state so any help and advice would be greatly appreciated
My recommendation to you would be to buy a couple of each nappy and try them out on your bubba! You won't know what suits bub best until he/she is born then you can spend up big thats the fun part!!! Don't buy too many at first. I gradually built up my stash over the first 6mths of DD's life (and still buying sometimes haha addictive)
I love out of those the bumgenius and Greenkids.... I love AIO's and OSFM's as they seem to last and dont need covers.
Haven't tried Weenies so can't comment. My experience with Peapods is "you get what you pay for" iykwim. I've got 2nd hand ones i want to sell so if you're interested let me know.... in great condition.
ps so exciting that you are expecting after everything you've been thru!!! Yay for you!!!
I've used BG and GK and really like the GKs now, but i think the BGs probably would be better on smaller bubbies.
I think it really depends on the size and shape of your baby too, so buying a few different ones to try is a good idea. Also, will you be using them from birth or later?
didispunk - those g diapers are the same as the weenies hehe! I like the look of those and the disposable inserts and micro inserts..
Ren - I think I have been talked out of pea pods after more research on here they don't have very good feedback LOL! BG and GK's are looking good though!
Arimeh - Thanks for the advice and pre-warning of the suedecloth! what other option did you go for for your DD's?
Marcellus - I am thinking from birth till its TT, I do have some disposables just incase... I don't mind having one brand from birth and a different brand from another age either if you think the BG's would be better on the newborn
I agree with Shanti - don't buy all one brand until you know what fits your bub best or you might be stuck with an entire stash that doesn't fit.
I have about 60nappies in my stash and probably only a third of them do I have more than one of the same brand.
It's not actually what you were asking, but i found flats with a good cover were good for newborns and their sometimes explosive poos.
Do any of the pockets/AIO-types work well for containment, just out of curiousity? I always thought BGs seemed like they would be pretty good for poosplosions, but we never had any then so don't know.
I've only tried green kids out of those and have found they are a bit wide for my 4mo (although she is quite petite). There is no way I would have used them from birth, it's only been the last 3-4 weeks that I've been able to put them on her, I'm hoping that I'll get the value out of them as she grows bigger as they should do her through to tt. I also found terry flats to big for her as a newborn. We mainly use itti bitti's or bbh with a few other odd ones thrown in
I have a lot of GKs, and a lot of BumGs. Have never used Pea Pods or Weenies, so can't comment on those, but I find GKs to be of better quality. Specifically the elastic and aplix have lasted a lot longer in the GKs, whereas the elastic in my BumGs needed replacing within about eight months, and the aplix is starting to lose its grip - these were version 2.0s though, apparently those problems have been rectified in later versions. GKs IMO are easier to stuff and hence less prone to leaks, and look a lot nicer than the BumGs. If you use the GK bamboo inserts they are incredibly absorbent too. Currently on my 2.5 year old I use 1 GK bamboo insert for day time use (which has 6 layers of bamboo), whereas I need to use both BumG microfibre inserts plus a GK bamboo insert to get the same level of absorbency.
I initially bought BumGs over GKs for the reasons others have mentioned - they were smaller and trimmer than GKs and thus seemed more suitable for the early stage. But wished that I hadn't, as GKs have been much more reliable for me, and I ended up using mostly fitteds with covers when E was smaller (and he was a 4.2kg newborn, so not exactly small). I found that pockets and AIOs were a lot more prone to poosplosion leaks with a breastfed baby (to answer your question Marcellus LOL!), and with this baby plan to use prefolds and fitteds for those first few months. AIOs were the worst - I would never use an itti-bitti if I was expecting a poo, we had a few disasters. BumGs weren't too bad for containment actually, but not as reliable as fitteds with covers.
If you are not adverse to the idea of using different nappies to suit the different needs of a younger versus older baby, then prefolds with covers (preferably gusseted if PUL, or Maz's fleece covers are awesomely reliable) for the early stages tend to be a lot more reliable for containment, and wash/dry quicker. Prefolds can also be used as boosters/pocket stuffers later on, and are much, much cheaper than fitteds, but much easier to use than flats. Bamboo prefolds are more expensive than cotton but more absorbent. The newborn stage requires lots of frequent changes and good containment, and less focus on absorbency as almost every change is a dirty rather than wet change, whereas in the older stages absorbency is much more important than containment.
I also agree with the idea of waiting to see what suits your bub and going from there. Especially when it comes to pockets/AIOs, how well they work is very dependent upon how well they fit a particular body shape.
My vote would go to BG's. I've used them and peapods and found the peapods to be leak-o-rama. I haven't used greenkids but have friends that really like them. But I LOVE my BGs.
