New Environmental Nappies

Hi All. For eco-conscious mummies....
A new brand of disposables is on the market called Safeties. It is already out in WA and will be available in other states in July. It is 100% biodegradable and Aussie made! DH and I are eagerly waiting to get them here in Bris. I called one if the suppliers in WA for a price and they quoted me $17 for 36 newborns. I use eenees at the moment but they seem to have gone up in price. Am pretty keen to try safeties out. Anyone in WA who has tried.....can you give feedback?

It's great that there will soon be an Aussie made alternative. I've been using Moltex Oko nappies which have been fantastic - but they are made overseas. Not sure if you can get them in Qld. Can certainly get them here in the ACT region though.

Are they available in supermarkets or just through certain suppliers? (I'm in VIC)

I've seen them here in the IGA stores... haven't bought them as I generally use cloth. They come on special heaps; they retail about $16. I'll ask at my Mother's Group if anyone has used them yet and post if they have.

I'll keep an eye out too. We've been using Bambos when we're away but they come all the way from Denmark.

ETA I just googled them. It seems they are made in China but Aussie owned.

I have order a carton and should get them at the end of the week. They are quite a bit more expensive on the East coast then the west coast which is a bit cheeky as I have found out that are made in Asia and not in WA as I thought. (Blackbird has said they are from China). Our eenees are way too small now so we are using bambos temporarily as I didnt want to go out and buy more pouch pants for the interim. One carton of infant safeties is costing me about $130 - about 70c each nappy. Pretty pricey compared to WA. I called an IGA there and they quoted me about $16 for a small pack - about 50c per nappy.

Would it be cheaper to get someone in WA to post them over for you in future? Especially if you can time it for when they are on special.

Krysalyss - for that price you could have had 5 bumgenius pocket nappies that will fit from birth to toddler.... Another box and a half and you'd have 12 which would be enough MCNs if you washed each day. Or get another 12 and wash every second day. Just a thought.

The other alternative is Moltex. Which are made in Germany and are fully compostable. I can get them in Canberra for about 30 a packet. A packet of 4-8kg size has 48 nappies (62c each). The smaller size ($30) has 52 (57c ea) for memory. So they are a bit cheaper. It would be interesting to get information on how the nappies are produced in Germany v China. I wonder if one uses less water etc? I suspect the Germans have been doing environmentally friendly things for a lot longer than the Chinese - having travelled in both places. (And I am not being racist with that last remark so please nobody flame me).

Moltex are only 80% biodegradable. I checked when I first started looking into nappies. Also I am very time poor. We have been using eenees and would have stuck with those but these ones came on the market. We will be using the safeties for now but I have made a comment to the manufacturer about the difference in price between the states.

Krysalyss - that is really interesting about them only being 80% biodegradable. That is certainly NOT how they've been sold to me... So I will be following up with the person who sells them to me. NOT HAPPY at ALL. You don't happen to know where you got that info from do you?

And if you give me the details - I'm happy to also contact safeties and make the same complaint about price. I'm sure we can start a bit of a campaign in the eastern states on this.

I got the info about Moltex from Neco the ecostore (online store) who sell them. I am currently using Bambo (we have grown out of the eenees) while I wait for the safeties and they are about the same. I had a look on the web about moltex to try and check it up but can only find them saying that the outer layer is 100% biodegradable. I think the problem often comes in the absorbant core as with the seventh generation nappies. If I am wrong, let me know as it would give me another disposable option.

Re safeties price - I called one of the IGAs in WA first so maybe do that to get a more exact price. I then emailed safeties through their website at: http://www.safetiesnaturenappy.com/contact_us
