Toilet training general chatter

Yay for your DD. Yep we transitioned DS to undies before he was asking to use the toilet, and it actually took him a long time to initiate using the toilet even though he stayed dry in undies. He can just hold on for an amazing time. Like your DS he'd often wait while I went to the toilet in the morning and it wasn't unheard of for him to stay dry for the whole time at childcare (we started to worry he wasn't drinking enough so he wouldn't need to pee there). Every now and again we'd ask if he wanted to use the toilet or if he actually looked like he needed to go we'd suggest it or just guide him there rather than asking. Worked fine for us. Only problem was actually at childcare. I think it started out because he wouldn't ask to use the toilet and they wouldn't prompt him, but he developed a thing about using the toilet there and so he was in nappies at childcare and dry in undies at home for a good 6 months or more...

I... I think DD1 might be fully TTed, or close enough. I don't want to jinx things, but she hasn't had an accident in weeks, spends days at home with no nappy, tells us when she needs to go when she IS wearing one... I might have to test if she's alright with a nappy-less outing!

Well, she went half a day at Scienceworks yesterday without a nappy - after lunch, she told me she needed to wee even though she was already wearing one, so I took it off and popped undies on her :D She did have a poo incident in the night, but I think that's because her seat wasn't on the toilet. She told us right after it happened anyway, so sort of a win :)

She might be right for undies full time? I think one problem we had with DS was that we confused him going between undies/nappies/pull-ups.

How do your little ones get onto the toilet? We have a step for DD but she cannot climb up and twists onto her seat attachment without it falling off or her almost falling in?

DD hates the step and refused to use the loo for 2 weeks after I introduced it. I lift her onto the loo. She likes her feet to dangle or uses her legs and feet to help balance her favorite big book on her lap.

Ok, so Spock has been having some nappy free time, and if she is nudie rude she always runs to the potty to do wees! Haven't tried undies yet, sometimes she will ask for her nappy on (which we think is cause she wants to do a poo, which sometimes she does other times she doesn't) day care suggested pull-ups, but a friend said they just confused her boys because they couldn't tell the difference between a nappy and pull-ups,
I do have 'training undies' they are undies just with a bit of padding in them. They worth it? Or just go straight to normal ones?

I did use training pants. But it's horses for courses. Ds1 did not need nappies at home etc, but his personality meant he did not want to go to the toilet on his own at OCD. So he'd let little bits of wee out all the time and it wasn't nice. He never pooed in them. I didn't think a nappy was the way to go - he was TT for all intents and purposes.
They don't hold much. But it was a safety net I guess.

Teeki - DS didn't really get it properly until was just in undies - (or he just knew could be lazy) - but if yours have only a small amount of padding in them then I would think wouldn't be confusing.


DS isn't properly toilet trained yet we still have only about a 75% success rate with poos - wees he is good with now, but poos who knows?? we are 100% successful if he is wearing his sisters clothes but only about 30% successful if he is wearing his own (as he chooses to wear DD's clothes on about 60% of days this is not so bad :-)). DH thinks we should go back to pull-ups because cleaning poo out of clothing is just horrible, but I think that would just mean a return to him weeing and pooing in the pull up. Are there any normal pants which clip/unclip on the sides? That would make trying to deal with a poo in the pants much easier. Is only about once a week I end up dealing with a poo in the pants but sometimes is a couple of times at daycare and I feel bad for them. His poos are enormous about the size of small chicken so are not easy to deal with - one in his beach gear on the weekend was not pleasant (he said to me "with poos I just have no idea" - I think he has heard me say that, because he clearly has an idea some of the time) - thank goodness for doggy poo bags!!!

Wombutts cloth pull ups could be worn without the insert. They have side snaps, but can also be pulled up and down bc they have elastic sides

we had one win today =) Spock had a nappy and pants on, and said she wanted to use the pot, so I took everything off her, and she did wees!!! normally if she is nudie rudie we have a 75% success rate with going on the pot, but this was the first time she had a nappy on and wanted it off =)
unfortunately, I then get too excited and think she has clicked and will do that every time now....and she ended up with an overfull leaking nappy cause she kept saying no when i asked her if she needed to do wees, or had done one and needed a new nappy....probably shouldn't trust her no's anymore...

DS asked to wear undies the other morning. Awesome! Then had runny poos. Told me he had wees. (I was making lunch for kindy). I said go to the bathroom, i be there in a sec. Cue poos from kitchen to bathroom, luckily most in bathroom as he jumped up and down cos it was running down his leg.
Always listen when child says wees or poos, especially when they don't always distinguish one from the other.

DD 33 months has been using training pants for a couple of months now. The first few days were fantastic. No accidents, she took really well to going to the toilet, wiping, flushing, hand washing etc. But it's all been falling apart lately.

If I remind her to go to the toilet, she refuses to go to the toilet now unless bribed. She will tell me she needs to go - mid pee. By the time we get there it's too late. I never make a huge deal, just "Oh well, good try" and make a huge praise fuss when she does get it.

But the biggest problem is she has started saving her poos up for nap time (when she wears a nappy). She will do it 5 min after being put down and no matter how tired she is, if she has done a poo, she refuses to go back to bed. She normally has up to a 3hr nap, but this week she has not had ANY naps, even after swimming, despite being really tired. And tonight we had our first episode of night terrors - which I read can be caused bt sleep deprivation!

I am due with bub #2 in 2 weeks and thinking of throwing in the towel on toilet training for now. I only started initially because she had all the signs of readiness and seemed keen - and she was - but now it seems to be causing more trouble than it's worth. Any ideas?

I have no real tips...i know it is common (normal?) For children to go back and forth etc.. i don't plan on pushing at all with Spock, for the same reason, due with #2 in next few weeks.

Hi lovely BBers. Well we are in here for real now. Bit the bullet and decided to start TTing DD1. She is 3 in Feb and will start 3 year old kinder then. Also have discovered having two in cloth is not so fun especially as DD1 is a heavy wetter AND 2-3 a day soiler.

She has been great with wees, all on the toilet but only if I tell her to sit on it. The first two days she would run to the potty if she needed to go, sometime a tad too late but still with wee in the bladder. If I kept an eye on the time and her liquid intake and reminded her she was perfect.

Today, thought I'd see how she went only with reminders and asking IF she needed to go (no actual 'now it's time to sit on the little toilet) and despite being so good in the first days today was a disaster. Wet pants simply because she was too involved in play or didn't want to use the toilet.

Poos meanwhile are a complete no-go. I suppose this is normal even if wees are relatively successful? She will be on off on off the toilet all morning and even spend up to 20 mins on it then within 5 minutes of getting off goes into a secret private place and soils her underpants. Man!!

ETA - she won't tell me if she has wet or dirtied her pants either. :(

Oh ladylove, I'm tting dd3 too, 3 in feb and well She's ready and so am I, she's just a stubborn little thing.
I decided to start dd3 later than the other two, thinking it may be easier, but it's not.
I really hate the toilet training part of parenting little ones.

We are starting toilet training with DS1 after Christmas, he is 2 1/2 and tells us some of the time so thought we'd give it a go before I have to go back to full time work. He is in daycare 3 days a week from next week so kind of glad I get to share the load a bit.

Lucky you MummaT - DD1 never told us anything! She could have been in a dirty or dripping wet nappy all day and not care.

Beans I've discovered I hate TT with a passion! Brings out my impatient side alas.

We have had a breakthrough though- DD went from poo in underpants and if no underpants then poo on the floor to four days of poo in the potty, but only when we sat her on it after breakfast, with her dummy, and a book, toys etc. After about half an hour of faffing about she would do it in the toilet. A big yay! Not putting herself there on toilet but at least not in her pants.

Yesterday had a family lunch at Grandma's, she faffed about at home as usual but no poo, then at Grandma's reverted back to underpants deal. She was good and told me she'd 'had an accident' though so I praised her for that.

Then this morning no poo on the toilet again but just before lunch she said 'uh oh I need the toilet!' Ran about a little madly, I popped her on, her pants were dry (yay!- previously she would say she needed toilet a smidgen too late) then two minutes later she said 'mummy I did a BIG and a little poo in the toilet!' Bless! All by herself!

LL yay for some progress thats great. You must be feeling a bit relieved its all starting to click into place.

So boxing day is our big start. DS1 is consistently telling me when he does wee in his nappy when he goes to bed. I think for us it will be a matter of keeping the potty out and the TV off. At least he will have all his new christmas presents to play with so that should be a little easier. Fingers crossed it's not too painful for me LOL

I bought Spock some undies the other day, in the hope to encourage it. I now ask if she wants undies or a nappy, ... Still very hit and miss though

DD1 gets to choose a pair every morning. I want to get her some panda or dinosaur ones but can't seem to find any.

Kmart have dinosaurs in the boys undies?

Oh great! Looked in boys and girls in Target, Myer, but didn't think of Kmart.

Our hot water service is dead until at least next Monday. Do you find you need to bath/shower them extra from "accidents"? Trying to decide if I should delay starting for those extra few days

Hmm, dd tells me she needs a shower after every accident. I on the other hand think she only needs a shower if it can't be cleaned up with a face washer or baby wipe

Well we have started and 3 hours in and not a single wee yet. He is liking the undies so hopefully when it comes to wee it will motivate him to use the potty

We are hit and miss here, dd has had more accidents then I can count, however today only one accident. She has started telling me she needs to do wees as she runs down to the toilet. Number 2's are another story.

Yesterday was interesting, he did a wee about 1 minute after I posted, too late to get to the potty and ran off thinking he would be in trouble. 3 hours later I missed another wee as I had gone outside for a couple of minutes. I did get him as he was doing/finishing a poo a little bit later and grabbed him and put him on the potty. While he wasn't looking I grabbed some of the poo in his undies and when he got up off the potty I slipped the poo into the potty so he thought he had done it. Cheered and congratulated etc as if he had so he understood the potty was a good thing.

Today has been 50% in the potty so far which is success in my eyes.

Well small success here, today was an accident free day!!! :leap:

At last, got 3 wees in the toilet today!! it may have involved chocolate encouragement for DS and two friends/sibling that were here, and talk of the need to wee in the toilet if he wants to go to kinder. but we finally got some. hoping it is smooth sailing from here.

After 4 days ot was very clear that DS can not tell when a wee or poo is coming. He seems surprised everytime and was getting upset thinking he would be in trouble when he had an accident. So we stopped. We are now getting him on the potty as soon as he wakes so we can try get the morning wee in the potty. Yesterday was successful but today he wee'd before i could get him on, he still thought he did great and congratulated himself haha.
We will keep doing this for a few weeks and hopefully he starts to recognise the feeling so we can try again. Daycare said that they will pop him on the toulet at wach nappy change to get him used to the idea too and when we say so will go into full on training mode.

Oh poor sweet DS MummaT. Your daycare carers sound really supportive of your needs and opinions too.

Hotl yay for your little one! Was like that with DD1 too.

We are doing great. Rarely any accidents but only as long as I encourage her - or directly ask her - to use the potty. If she is busy playing she will forget or perhaps just not bother. All poos on the toilet lately - again as long as I pop her on - except if we are out at someone else's house. Then it is back to poo in pants. I think because she doesn't get to sit on the potty with her toys for as long as it takes her to relax enough / will the poo to come out.

She also is not great at wiping or pulling her underpants up properly.

I should get involved here ...

DS1 (4yo) is finally able to wipe his own bum properly (most of the time) and only very occasionally has an accident (usually because we're out somewhere and he's too busy playing to stop and go to the toilet ... he knows he's done it, he just doesn't care -- what's with that??)

DS2 (2yo) has started toilet training and is doing pretty well when awake - naps and overnight is still 100% nappyzone though, but he has started telling us when he's done wee as well as poo, which suggests to me he's making progress ... he doesn't like being dirty, so he should start letting us know when he needs to go soon ... right?

Who knows Peanutter! The other day DD1 (she turns 3 next month) excitedly informed me she had done a BIG yellow wee AND a BIG BIG poo (on the potty). When I looked there was wee but no poo, but a mountain of toilet paper and she said, very seriously, it's a toilet paper poo. And she expected a reward for it. When I explained it wasn't a real poo she just kept saying, yes it is, it is a real toilet paper poo!

have had awesome few days. all day wees in the toilet. one day, he got out a pull up and put it when he needed to poo. the other poos have been early morning ones when he still has nappy on from overnight. i'm not pushing too much atm, considering he is going so well with wees.

today, we were out and so i had put a pull up on him. this morning he told me "i no like pull ups!" He told me he needed to wee. I asked if he wanted to wee on the grass (i would pull over) or could he wait til we got to friend's place (10 mins away). He said "I wait". i wasn't actually convinced he could wait but he didn't want to go on the grass. Got to friend's place and he checked out toilet, but was still wary. few more minutes later, he was ready and did his first wee in non-home toilet. even better, the pull up was dry, so he had held on for quite awhile.

Its so true, it is so much easier to do it when they are ready! Plus, finding the right motivation. DS really wants to go to 3 yr old kinder, and the kids have to be toilet trained to go. Got 3 more weeks to work on poos.

I keep missing DS1s first morning wee, i am just not quick enough but living on 5 hours sleep a night isnt helping so we will just talk wee and poo til he is ready to try again

I don't know if first morning wee is that important.

We were very lucky training ds1 (3 tmrw!) as he pretty much toilet trained on his own accord when he was 2yrs4mnths. The only thing I initially did was put the potty in the bathroom and get him to do a week before the bath or shower. I felt the running water was alwAys a good motivator! We did that tho for atleast six months so he was fully comfortable with the potty by the time toilet training started.

Lady love - I never understand the sheer delight in poos! Ds1 tonight was telling me how awesome it was that he did a big big poo at the beach on the weekend (not the actual beach lol we were there staying with family) and started cheering about how it made his tummy feel heaps better lol.

Toilet training is a funny experience!
