DD is 20 months and showing serious signs of wanting to use the toilet. She knows what poo and wee is, is aware of the sensation of weeing and even got her toy Bert, put him in the potty, says "do wees" and "good girl"
My question though is how often should I be taking her to the loo? She doesn't pause when she's going, makes no signs of it. When she shouts out "Do wees toilet" I take her. She might say this 2 or 3 times in a day. She doesn't nap during the day, so I can't take her when she wakes up. TIA.
Initially you take them every 30min-hour so even if a little comes out she gets the gist of the sensation while on the toilet.
Take her when she wakes in the morning and also before she goes to bed.
She sounds pretty advanced to me, what I have mentioned above is for the first stages. If she is already letting you know it sounds like she has great control already.
The important thing is to make sure she goes enough and not hold on too long so as not to get a UTI.
Good luck.
Thanks Heather. I've noticed that when she's saying "do wees" and I take her, her pull ups aren't wet and she doesn't go on the toilet either. So I think she's practicing with the words, rather than noticing the sensation while she has a nappy on.
Keep taking her as she asks.
It will build her confidence and she will know exactly what happens when she needs to go.
They often spend time 'going' to the toilet without actually going, despite having asked to go, it is a natural learning stage. Try asking her if she needs to do wee every time you go. Another one here was always first thing in the morning we do a wee - start the day with a wee, finish with a wee, the routine will encourage her too.
Sounds like she is doing well, keep up the praise and encouragement but let her move at her own pace. The week I tried putting DD on the toilet every X number of minutes, turned her off wanting to go and she HATED it. Once I left her alone and followed her cues, she was toilet trained in a matter of weeks.
Perhaps try getting rid of the nappies altogether, and go for the knickers. Worked a treat here and really helped cement the idea I think that we did wee in the toilet, not in our pants anymore.
