does wees , but scared to poo in potty !

DS goes wees like a pro in the potty , with the odd accident here and there .. he will run around with no pants on at home and sit on the potty and do a wee when he needs ..

but poos are trcky .. a few mins before he needs to do one ... he askes for wipes and runds around looking for a place or a nappy .. i try to get him to sit on the potty but he gets scared .. so i know he needs to poop .. i usually take him outside where i know it will end up in the grass .. he gets scared and says POO POO .. and clingy onces hes done it .. then he goes off to "cleamup"

how do i get him to poo on the potty ?? do i offer incetives , take to the potty every 20mins or so .. or chase him with the potty and try and catch the poo , then praise him and tell him thats where poo goes

advice will be appreciated !!

Does he stand up to poo? I reccon that's a big problem in getting them to want to sit.

Maybe encourage him by offering to read a story.

Its not uncommon behaviour.
DS was scared as well, and still is sometimes. It got to the point where he would hold it in rather than go, or would do them overnight and have a pooey nappy in the morning.
It probably lasted 3-4 weeks before he decided it was OK.

He will get the hang of it, Lea. Don't stress. Poos are harder for kids than wees, they don't have the same control to start with. Just praise him (maybe a special sticker for poos on the potty?) heaps when he gets it right and ride out the times he doesn't.

Lea, this is really, really common. Having lived in Asia for a while, personally I believe that sitting is a very unnatural position to poo in, squatting is much easier, so no wonder so many kids take a long time to learn to poo sitting. There are some things you can do to help however.

Firstly, make sure he is drinking plenty of water so that there is less liklihood of constipation - hard poos can hurt and will set you back in the process. Also if you are using a potty, you might be able to help him be in more of a squatting position than sitting to start with and that might help. Both my boys started using the toilet straight off without the potty step (they are big imitators so DS1 wanted to do what mummy and daddy do, DS2 wanted to do what DS1 does!). On the toilet, if they have a stool at the right height for their feet to rest on, a good position is with feet flat on the stool and leaning forward a little. Maybe trying that would help also.

And the rest really is just patience. It will happen - it will probably surprise you and happen out of the blue. It's just a matter of gently persisting and waiting. GL.

DD was so scared to poo in the potty or toilet she became very constipated, got an anal fissure and became scared to poo at all.

I've actually put her back into nappies for the time being. If we're around the house i put her in pants and she'll wee in the potty all day, but if she needs a poo she asks for the nappy and i put one on her.

I kind of know i'm going to have to do something about it eventually, but it became so traumatic for us all. She was hysterically screaming and retching in fear when she needed to go, crying piteously in pain while she went and then sobbing afterwards when i cleaned her sore bum. She started to dance and squirm in cry sometimes hours before she'd actually manage to poo. When she did poo they were massive, big by MY standards and she's tiny. I just feel like we need a few weeks to get over it all. I gave her some syrup of figs for a week or two to loosen things up and make it easier and she's now completely stopped reacting when she poos. I guess i'll give it another week or so then put her back in pants and give it all another go.

thanks for the replies ..
he does stand up to poo. and often cries out to me when he's done it .. "oh no poo , poo "
i dont want him to be down on himself if he does dirty ..

if he has an accident i just say " its ok , we'll try agin soon . help me clean it up"
I always praise him . i dont want him to feel bad about accidents ..

i dont think hes constipated , but i do fear he may become it once day .. so i'll up the water ..

he actucally wont sit on the big toilet , hes a bit scared of it , i have a potty chair and a potty, the potty is low and he has to use it in a squatting postion ..

he is about 28months and started all one his own , once he did a wee that was it .. i hope its the same for poos soon !!
