    Bamboo questions

Ok so if i sound like i don't know much about cloth nappies - that is because i don't
I just started using cloth yesterday on my DS.

    So here goes -
Does anyone know where the best place to buy bamboo is? I have seen some for 10.95 for half a metre - is that good or expensive?
How many inserts would i get from that if i want to do trifold? I was thinking just one.

Would it have to be hemmed too before use?

    TIA

10.95 for half a metre is alright. You have to add postage on top of that so it will be about $16. Consider if you want to get a bit more than what you want for now and put it away as it's not as economical to get it in half metre lengths. eg you can get one metre from bamboofabricstore for $22 and they used to have flat rate shipping of $5 (double check on that) so that works out cheaper than two half metre lengths with postage. You may decide a few months down the track you want more

How wide is the piece? If it's 150 wide you'll get about 4 trifold boosters with a bit extra I think (sorry got brain fuzz this morning). Yes it needs to be hemmed as the edges will curl. Overlocked preferably but you can sew it inside out then turn it out the right way and top stitch. It is quite thick though so don't do any more than 2 layers in this way.

What is (white) Malden Mills 100 and 200 series - is that just the stuff that you can use for inserts ? i have found that in half metre cuts too.

    Maiden mills is fleece chickie.
It's more for outers, not boosters.

You either want bamboo fleece, hemp fleece or microfibre.
Maiden Mills is the brand name of a particular fleece.

    Hey Hun,

I buy metre of bamboo from spotlight for $20 and thats 4 layers thick. I get about 20 boosters out of that and i keep it at four layers no problem.

I just bought some more this morning so they definitely have it!

Good luck, they may not have them at all stores but you can order it from another store im sure?

ahhh its the bamboo batting...not fleece etc. I just bought some to make a summer weight doona......not sure how it would hold up in nappies to be perfectly honest. batting is just scraps or more corectly pulp of a fibre pressed together like how they make paper....I would have my doubts as tohow it would wear with constant weeing and washing as opposed to a woven or knitted fibre.

Just my thoughts....it did however make an awesome summer wieight quilt...I just popped two layers into an old doona cover and then did some fancystitching on top to hold it down...voila!!!

If anyone wants to suss it out further it is in the quilting section with all the quilt battings.

I have got a few questions about bamboo and prefolds.

I have seen different % of bamboo in the material from 75% to 90% bamboo.

*Do you go for the highest % bamboo?

*What is the difference between bamboo fleece and bamboo velour?

I bought a metre awhile ago from e-bay, but looking to buy about 2-4m this time. I have checked out a few websites. If you have any favourites, please post or PM me. (can't remember if we allowed to put names here)

I have used bamboo for boosters, but looking at making some pre-folds.

My plan is to use flannelette (nappy flanelette to start with, then maybe some coloured), and use bamboo for the pad bit in the middle.
*Will this work? I am making for my brother & SIL.
