Thinking about making boosters???

I have a heap of MCN already....but alot dont last long because I have discovered I have a heavy wee'er.....so what Im thinking, instead of buying a heap more nappies maybe I could make boosters to increase the life of the ones I already have. So I have a few questions about this idea.....
- Does it work out cheaper in the long run to make my own rather than buying a heap of pre-made boosters online??
- From what Ive read in some of the other threads, bamboo fleece would be best yea??
- Of the nappies I own I have the most success with bamboo/microfibre combos....would it work to maybe sew afew layers of each together...is that the way it works??? Or is the bamboo material really thick already???
- Do I need to layer the bamboo or does it come thick enough to just cut the shape and sew up the edges??
- For my non-pocket nappies, is the bamboo fleece ok to sit near DS's skin or would I need something else to cover them with??

I think thats all Im a little confused about for now....its just an idea Im toying with, so any opinions and experiences with this would be fabulous guys thanks

First, it'd be a good idea to layer the top of the bamboo boosters with micro fleece. This wicks the moisture away from the skin. With out the wee does sit against bub's skin.

An idea is to have micro fibre or something on top of the bamboo as even though bamboo holds alot, it is kind of slow to absorb, so the micro fibre would absorb quickly while the bamboo absorbs underneath slightly slower iykwim.

I think it'd work out cheaper. IME a half metre of bamboo fleece I got on ebay for $10 layered 2 - 4 times depending on how thick you need it will go a good distance. Depending on the size of them etc.

Personally, I've had bamboo against DS's skin (not good for him though), but I'd never put micro fibre against his skin. My DS is quite sensitive, so when making my own I have a heavier weight micro fleece against his skin & try to avoid having less than double layers of microfleece. Mainly over night. I use microfleece liners too.

I prefer bamboo. Its softer. Thats my only reason.

Yes most definitely! It's worth investing in a metre or two of bamboo. Have a look at the cost of ONE booster. They are an average of $10 plus postage.

Bamboo is great for boosters. Microfibre is good too but it isn't as absorbant in my experience. And is prone to compression leaks.

If that what works for you then by all means do it! You could sandwich it together in one piece or sew them together on one end.

Depends on how you like folding I have made boosters with 3 layers overlocked into a rectangular shape. Approx 12x30cm. They do take longer to dry than one you need to fold up though.

Bamboo is fine against the bum but it will be wet against the skin. You can use a microfleece liner. Don't confuse that with microfibre which can be irritating on the skin.

Ive just been looking around online to buy the bamboo...not cheap is it!! lol
Does anyone know of anywhere that sells offcut strips??? Im only looking to make boosters about 12cm wide at most

ETA snapsaustralia is $40 for 2 metres + postage. (that'll be about $10-ish)

bamboofabricstore is $22.95 per metre + $7.5 flat rate postage.

I've been racking my brain to remember but I think you'll get 12+ boosters from a metre. That's for cutting them 12cmx30cm and 3 layers like how I described before. You will get a bit of shrinkage so remember that before you buy a piece cut smaller.

Im just thinking two metres is a huge amount just for afew boosters......or would I end up with not many after layering???

I guess it depends on what your needs in the future will be too. $50 for 2 metres posted isn't really a lot. It's only one flashy nappy posted these days.

If you are a bit of a sewer then it won't last long I can guarantee you of that

Bamboo is that price pretty much every where. You could try Green Beans. They are in Oz & NZ. NZ does off cuts, but they are micro fleece & PUL. Not bamboo.
You might get some a bit cheaper of ebay, but from what I've gotten on there, its around the same unless you get lucky & noone else spots it!

Thats a good point Raven about it being only the cost of one spesh nappy!! I would much prefer to try to get the ones I have working better than buy more full nappies.

Flattery has bamboo fleece for $12.60m

honestly......you would be surprised how quickly 2m goes...even just for boosters. Trifolds....their 30cm square and double layer.....work it out...1m cut is 150cm wide...after shrinkage (yes you need to prewash in hot water) then your looking at getting about 6 with a little scrap left over.

Its amazing how many people dont realise how expensive fleece is to buy and wonder why MCN's cost so much...WAHM's dont make a lot of profit on them
