What's your Flight 370 conspiracy theory?

This gives me hope that the data and all the assumptions that have flowed from there are being scrutinised and analysed by a team of many experts, rather than the wild speculation that went on during the early days of the investigation. (Which apparently is still going on. It must have been the mangosteens, dammit!!!)

I am starting to wonder how much this search is costing our country each day and who plans on paying the bill for this, especially when our head of state keeps saying we won't stop until it's found. I understand and have empathy, sympathy for the families of the people on board, I would love answers, but with still little to go off....

Rubbish.
1. This "story" surfaced on 4chan
2. Location metadata can be edited just like any other metadata
3. If Philip Wood was an IBM engineer, I'm pretty sure he would be clever enough to send his distress call via multiple platforms. Plus, you can reasonably assume that a number of his close associates would also be highly savvy with social media. But this story has really only been picked up by the conspiracy types.
4. There are a lot of good people spending a long time & many, many millions of dollars looking for wreckage. Given the economic rationalism that prevails amongst western governments, the parties concerned would have manufactured some pretty tidy evidence of a crash to cover their tracks long before now.
5. There are a load of associated narratives that are being used to support the theory that are very obviously factually incorrect. Statements like Diego Garcia has not been mentioned by the mainstream media (not true, heard it discussed in the first weeks), wild theories about who exactly has control of the base, astonishing statements about Australian radar capabilities as a suggestion of complicity (37,000 km ... WTF? That's nearly the entire circumference of the globe), etc. That sort of factual inaccuracy doesn't do the conspiracists any favors.

I'm just gonna "like" MDs post because I agree with everything lol.

I wish I could share this with a friend of mine MD. Brilliant. And I agree too.

What I wonder is why we are so invested in going to such lengths, its pretty clear that they are either elsewhere or deceased and in a couple more days the black box will be useless too. I think there has to be a reason they havent scaled back the search yet and am pretty sure some of the planes and ships are searching other theories

Hilariously (or not) it appears the Chinese haven't been playing nicely & have been conducting an entire search process outside the agreed search zone (quite possibly based on sat/radar/surveillance data that they haven't shared OR was shared with Mslaysia but discounted). Things that make you go Hmmmmm....

Mumma, they need to find the plane for a few reasons. 1. They need conclusive evidence that the plane did actually crash to discount the possibility that it is being held by terrorists. 2. If they can find the flight data recorder they may be able to piece together an understanding of what went wrong. 3. If there is a flaw in the plane's components, every plane on the planet needs to be checked. 4. Closure for the families. 5. There's a lot of money riding on what happened - in terms of compensation, paying for search efforts - finding out what happened will determine who has to pay. 6. Finding the data recorder while there is still a location beacon active could save potentially years of searching.

Ok, I retract my statement about the Chinese searching outside the zone. Don't believe everything you read on the internet!!
Very exciting news - they are finding pings now for much longer periods of time. Even if they don't find the recorders before the batteries run out, they will have a much smaller area to focus on. Which is pretty impressive when you consider the utter ??????? that they started with!

Sounded very hopeful on the news this morning... really hope they find the flight recorder so they can try to piece together what's gone wrong.

You're right, it'll be closure mostly for the families, but also for the rest of the world who have been following and wondering for so long now.

So, apparently those pings weren't pings after all which means they've just spent untold gazillions of hours and dollars looking in THE WRONG PLACE! *facepalm*

Which just goes back to what I've been saying all along about checking that data & interrogating the assumptions/interpretations they've made.

Ah. I can't stand it. All those poor families who would be thinking this is just another wild goose chase.

I heard that this morning too. Seems like they may as well just randomly fly over various parts of the ocean, it would have the same result. Did anyone else hear the theory that the reason it took so long to come to light in full, and the reason they looked in the wrong spot for so long is because they were hiding the fact that they accidentally shot it down during a military exercise?

Can I just say I stick to my original theory on this one.

I think it wasn't a malfunction. I think a third party was involved. And either the right authorities know and don't know how to deal with it. Or they don't know and it's essentially like looking for a needle in a haystack. I'd say the latter.

I hope the families get closure. But at this point I don't think that's going to happen.

I agree, I was talking about it with DH - about how it is possible to lose something the size of a plane, he was saying he had watched some show about aeroplanes disappearing in the Bermuda Triangle, and apparently there is to do with a fault line in the earths crust where some gas bubbles up and causes all debris and whole planes to sink rapidly and be drawn into the fault line itself, and therefore never ever be discovered. Is called the Methane Bubbling effect apparently and on a site I was looking at it also said

"And if some really large bubbles of methane gas were to rise in the atmosphere and then get sucked into the engines of a jet, they could make a nasty explosion"

So Methane Bubbles causing the plane to crash and then sinking/disappearing the debris - is my theory. (Would think the area round there must have a few fault lines, underground volcanoes etc?)

I am so devastated for the families affected by this tragedy, they will never get the closure they need to properly deal with this!

As for what really happened....well, will we ever really know? I think the gov'ts have handled the release of information (or lack of) very badly from the start. I have always felt that they were hiding crucial information from the public. Now I have no idea what really happened. But I honestly believe that one of the gov'ts do know what happened and it is all being covered up for some reason! The public will never know the truth and the plane will never be found!
